Meronk leads Irish Open as Seamus Power plunges out of contention (Irish Examiner)

The Waterford man had been beautifully positioned at the halfway stage.

That was where the momentum stalled with five successive pars followed by a first bogey, at the par-four 16th. The situation lasted for at least ten minutes and one rules official somehow thought it necessary to put the group on the clock. It was a stunning turnaround in fortunes for the 35-year old who has been in exceptional form the last year or more. So much to play for, but the home challenge will not be part of the drama. Any number of players will tee off on Sunday with a belief that they are in a position to claim the win. A four-under par 68 leaves Poland’s Adrian Meronk alone on the summit at 14-under.

"Nearly had a good finish which was nice, but overall it was more of the same," Harrington said. "I would obviously like to have shot two or three better and after 10, I was thinking I could shoot seven-under, but I never really got it going on the back nine. I made lots of bad swings, so it was a bit disappointing.” "You have to learn to deal with that. "It was kind of scary. "I did a little bit, but that's your own responsibility," he said.

Seamus Power out of contention as Irish Open draws to a close today (Extra.ie)

By mid-afternoon in Mount Juliet on Saturday, the Seamus Power surge in the Horizon Irish Open had become a power outage.

Looking to go low for the week and make a few extra points. 'If I had not won in Portrush, I'd be sitting here now and you guys would all be asking me do you have what it takes to win in St Andrews in a couple weeks? On seven under, Lowry is tied 19th and too far back unless he shoots the lights out. Maybe it was the expectation that got to Power a little. Rather, he put it down to a bad day at the office. 'You never like being on the clock but if you lose time it's on you to make it back up. 'I'm a long way back and I'm not going to have a chance but a low score will still be exciting tomorrow. I feel like I play good enough golf to be able to win at that level again,' he said. On moving day, his 77 was a shocker, the second-worst of 78 third-round scores and it dropped Power from fourth to 56th. His lone birdie came at the 13th. Some slipped and slithered towards the tented village to dry out over a coffee, or something stronger. I'd love to go back four hours but that's not how it works.
