Aki captains Ireland against Māori as Frawley starts at out-half (The42)

BUNDEE AKI HAS been named captain for Ireland's game against the Māori All Blacks on Wednesday [KO 8.05am Irish time, Sky Sports].

Jack Conan covers the back row, while Ulster’s Mike Lowry is in the number 23 shirt. Loughman, Dave Heffernan, and Tom O’Toole form the front row, McCarthy combines with Kieran Treadwell in the second row, and Prendergast teams up with Nick Timoney and Gavin Coombes in the back row. O’Brien makes up the back three with Jordan Larmour and Earls. The involvement of both Earls and Larmour is something of a surprise given that one of them was expected to start the first Test against the All Blacks after Mack Hansen’s positive Covid-19 test result. James Hume and Aki will pair up in an impactful Irish midfield for Wednesday’s game, while Frawley partners Craig Casey in the halfbacks. Frawley is one of five uncapped players who feature in the Ireland team, with fullback Jimmy O’Brien, back row Cian Prendergast, loosehead prop Jeremy Loughman, and second row Joe McCarthy also starting. Keith Earls also features on the left wing against the Māori, with Jordan Larmour on the right.

As it happened: Māori All Blacks v Ireland (The42)

Relive all the action as it happened in Hamilton as Ireland got their summer tour to New Zealand underway.

Love then combines with Tamaiti Williams to chop down Frawley, the Maoris win the penalty and we go for a scrum deep in the Ireland half. A really disappointing night for Ireland in Hamilton. Andy Farrell’s side looked off the pace in too many areas and lacked cohesion in both attack and defence. We’ll have a full match report and all the reaction from Garry Doyle in New Zealand on site shortly. Niall Scannell opts for a quick-tap penalty, has a go from close range and can’t find a way through, but Gavin Coombes is next man up and he manages to get the ball down. The ball moves inside to Frawley who shapes up a kick out towards Jordan Larmour on the opposite wing, but he gets his angles wrong and the ball is intercepted. Ireland finally applying some pressure with a series of pick and goes, but they can’t find a way through. There’s a few Ireland players who won’t enjoy the replay of that one. The game is beginning to open up a little but Ireland look comfortable so far. Ireland need to get a grip on this game, giving far too many penalties away and inviting pressure. The home side are starting to grow into the contest as they go through the phases and test the Ireland defence for the first time today. Frawley adds the conversion and Ireland lead by two. The conversion is missed and Ireland trail by five.
