It wouldn’t be the early rounds of Wimbledon if there wasn’t a rain delay. The match is delicately poised but the rain has to clear up first. There are a few more umbrella’s coming up as the rain gets slightly heavier. The word coming out of Wimbledon is that there won’t be any play until 12:30pm at the earliest. Closing out the action will be Murray, who faces James Duckworth. Murray made it to the third round last year but was emphatically defeated by Denis Shapovalov and admitted afterwards that he was questioning his future. The US Open champion has shaken off injury concerns but faces a tricky opening match against world No 46 Alison van Uytvanck, who reached the fourth round herself in 2018.

Reigning men's singles champion Novak Djokovic starts proceedings on Centre Court.

Djokovic has not won any of the last three grand slams – the first time that has happened since 2018. Djokovic has won the last three titles at Wimbledon – and six in total – while there are doubts over the fitness of Nadal, who played through the French Open with a foot injury, and only two of his 22 titles have been at SW19. With Nadal winning in Australia and Paris, the Spaniard is now two clear of Djokovic on 22 grand slam singles titles, but this is a serious chance for the Serbian to claw one back.

Wimbledon returns in full with big crowds, roars and a little rain (The Washington Post)

The All England Club had a first day unlike any since 2019, what with the pandemic nixing 2020 and forcing 50 percent capacity for the opening of 2021.

The war in Ukraine: As the tournament gets underway, Wimbledon’s Russia and Belarus ban leaves 16 of the top 100 on the outside. Then the crowd cheered Struff at great length as he tried to hold on, but then a well-placed, 97-mph, second-serve winner coaxed an error and ended it, Alcaraz applauding Struff as Struff walked out. At times it felt like one of those occasions when the opponent, in this case 32-year-old Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany, seemed more of an inconvenience. He’s one of the multiple, viable interests for British tennis fans who used to have to throw it all on Tim Henman a generation ago. “Yes, because I’ve experienced something that I’ve never experienced in my life in Australia. So this post-Australia period of next several months was challenging emotionally for me because of a lot of different factors.” He said the “sensations coming back on the court with everything that happened post-Australia, particularly the first few tournaments, was difficult. Well before he reached his present-day ranking of No. 12, he got seeded No. 29 last year at Wimbledon, which meant he got into the seeded locker rooms, no? They happened for Carlos Alcaraz, the 19-year-old Spanish sensation, and they were deep and big and throaty under the roof. All the possibilities came back into the air, in a manner that rings with the words of Ons Jabeur, the woman ranked a heady No. 2, when she said, “I’m someone from Tunisia; nobody even believed that I could be here, and here I am talking to you [reporters].” Right now, I don’t feel the traces of that, so to say, anymore. People watched from over the walls of the adjacent court, with one dangling a glass of rosé that looked well north of unpleasant. Over by little Court No. 17 early on, tucked in a row of courts sandwiched between the two monsters (Centre and No. 1), native Marylander Frances Tiafoe played his 25th major tournament, somehow. WIMBLEDON, England — Wimbledon resumed unmitigated life Monday for the first time since 2019 and the last echoes of “Roger, Roger!” ricocheting around Centre Court from a soaring men’s final way back then.

"The last thing I expected was to come back from surgery and win two titles in a row," Berrettini said after retaining his Queen's Club crown. Rune, Musetti and Draper are third, fourth and fifth — respectively — in the Pepperstone ATP Race To Milan, trailing only Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. After winning at Stuttgart and The Queen's Club, the Italian enters Wimbledon on a nine-match winning streak. The Italian leads Garin 2-1 in their ATP Head2Head, though Tuesday's contest will be the pair's first meeting on grass. That's what I think I achieved in the last couple of weeks, to get as many matches on grass as possible. "I love the serve-and-volley game, coming in as much as I can, slicing, attacking. I said — I insisted, in fact — that I can play on this surface, and it remains one of my favourite surfaces that tennis has to offer. The fourth seed is widely regarded as one of the game's best clay-courters, so that statement is not one to be taken lightly. "People kind of doubted that I can play on grass, I think it's fair to say. A new treatment on his chronic foot injury has provided relief from pain both on the court and in his daily life. In stark contrast to Nadal, Tsitsipas played three grass-court events in the last month, saving his best for last. It's a little bit more predictable when you have the history in the weeks before."
