Greene sealed the victory on 71 minutes with a sublime second goal. The hardworking Rory Gaffney set up Greene to cross. But he failed to capitalise on a mistake by Mannus as Lee Grace cleared his shot off the line. First mesmerising Jack Scott, the Rovers striker cut past the backtracking Burns before blasting a left foot shot home from a tight angle. Despite St Pat’s honest endeavour, Alan Mannus in the Rovers goal had precious little to do in a first half Rovers commanded. A magnificent goal from Aaron Greene capped victory for Shamrock Rovers at Richmond Park as the champions opened up a 10-point lead at the top of the table.

With ominous intent, Stephen Bradley's Shamrock Rovers extended their gap at the top of the table to ten points to put their recent hiccups in Louth behind ...

With Danny Mandroiu joining Jack Byrne and Richie Towell on the list of absentees, Bradley was down a few bodies in the midfield department. This was close to a sell-out despite some Inchicore rumblings over middling form, with Friday night’s concession of two late goals in Donegal souring the weekend for Tim Clancy and his squad. That said, the sight of veteran attacker Aaron Greene nutmegging his way through a static Saints rearguard before smashing home what proved to be the decisive goal was an unexpected plot twist.

Rovers survive late St Pat's scare to extend lead (RTE.ie)

Shamrock Rovers were missing some marquee players but nevertheless edged past St Patrick's to extend their lead at the top of the Premier Division to ten ...

Rovers had by now emptied the bench, adding some youth to their outfit in the shape of Aidomo Emakhu and the promising Irish underage international Justin Ferizaj, who made his senior debut here. Owolabi was sprung from the bench and looked sure to make it 2-1 only for Lee Grace to clear off the line. Greene, who clearly does not have the pace he once had, was isolated but nevertheless beat two Saints players, Scott and Burns, before blasting beyond Anang and seemingly securing the points. They were pretty solid defensively here and took control of the game in the second half. Indeed, he scored the opener 16 minutes into the second half. Lyons' battle with Darragh Burns was compelling from start to finish.

Andy Lyons' sixth goal of the season and a piece of individual brilliance from Aaron Greene took the game away from St Patrick's Athletic.

However, he failed to make sufficient contact with his effort from inside the area and fired over. Buoyed by their end to the half, Tim Clancy’s side came out firing after the restart. With 20 to play the game was effectively put to bed in sensational style courtesy of a brilliant solo effort from Greene. He danced around the Saints defenders on the endline with two nutmegs and smashed the ball by Anang at his near post.

And it was curtains ten minutes later when Greene conjured up his magic spell to leave the Saints defence in a pitiful heap. Gaffney held the ball up for Greene whose cross was missed by Gannon, but was swept home by Lyons for his sixth goal of the season. Rory Gaffney and Greene could not be faulted for effort and endeavours, and extracting the same wow factor from them was going to be a challenge. Greene had other ideas, of course, and rose to the challenge midway through the second-half. Pats were happy to hit the Hoops on the break in the opening half, allowing the visitors control the tempo of a well-contested game. And it was particularly ruthless from the champions, as Lyons’s sixth goal of the season came at a time when St Pat’s were just starting to find their rhythm.

Eoin Doyle headed over from a Burns cross while Forrester twice tried his luck from distance, with one sailing wide and the other smothered by Mannus. Eoin Doyle converted but there was barely time to restart before the final whistle. For all that decent Rovers play, the home side remained a threat on the counter-attack and twice had opportunities to take the lead shortly before the break but did not make either of them count. And there was a sense that Rovers had weathered that early St Pat’s pressure relatively easily as they began to get a foothold in the game and tested their opponents by switching play or with balls over the top for Greene and Rory Gaffney to pursue. Greene also drove a dangerous ball across the face of goal but there was nobody on hand to apply the touch to guide it home. RUTHLESS Shamrock Rovers punished St Pat’s twice in 10 minutes to move 10 points clear at the top of the table.
