Although she has lived in London, one of her fondest memories is going to see her grandmother in Romania. In 2021 after winning her maiden Grand Slam at the US Open, she was voted the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year. Due to her professional tennis career being in its infancy, Raducanu has enjoyed a meteoric rise up the rankings from 343 in 2020 before her US Open win shot her into the top 20. However, promising American and beaten French Open finalist, Coco Gauff, is the youngest in that section, aged 18. In each of her last two, she could only reach the Second Round. She became the youngest major champion since Maria Sharapova in 2014 and the lowest-ranked player to win a major since 2009 - when Kim Clijsters beat Caroline Wozniacki.

He explains that those days are never in the week before a tournament, during a tournament, or in the four days preceding a tournament - allowing her tennis to continue to be the priority. I have heard it suggested that since her sensational US Open win in September last year, that Raducanu has taken her eye off the ball - so to speak. If that’s as good as it gets it is already a remarkable thing, and one she appears predisposed to enjoy. Though that might not satisfy the John McEnroes of this precinct, who saw in her retirement in the fourth round a year ago a lack of nerve more than fitness, it seems reasonable to more sensitive ears. She is one of only 126 women in the history of tennis to win a grand slam tournament. What she is in fact experiencing is a crash course in how the world works, about power, influence, commerce, value, and how she connects to the rapidly evolving eco system surrounding her. Everyone wants me to do well and is behind me, [those] who are out there on the court and are going to be cheering. Today she is dealing with tens of millions of pounds on her own account. About the starring role Raducanu is learning on the job, like a princeling suddenly empowered by the death of the monarch. I think that everything that I’ve been doing with them has been very positive because I feel like I’ve learnt a lot from them, just seeing the way they go about things. She is the star of Vodafone’s new summer campaign. Ask her what it all means, how it feels to be loved by all, to be the focus of attention, to be the major story on the world’s most celebrated tennis stage having never set foot on Centre Court, and she is groping around the baseline for answers; a little ill at ease, a little nervous, a little unsure. A year ago she arrived as a little known sixth-former straight from the A-level examination hall. To her right an aide directing the questioning, like a Walsingham or Cecil fussing about Elizabeth I.

EMMA RADUCANU faces a tough test in her Wimbledon first-round match.

Alison Van Uytvanck steps up to serve and takes a 30-0 need. Van Uytvanck storms back to win the next two rallies and set up a break point, dumping the ball in the net. An aggressive return from the Brit earns her a break point but she finds herself at deuce. Raducanu begins her first service game with an error but gets back to 30-15. But three errors from the world No 46 set up a set point for Raducanu who dumps the ball in the net. A double fault and an error from the Belgian brings up a fifth break point for the Brit but Van Uytvanck saves it with a drop shot. She gets to 15-30 and hits a shot on the baseline that is originally called out but immediately overruled by the chair umpire. She chases down a Van Uytvanck dropshot and the 28-year-old sends her return long. Raducanu 6 - 4 6 - 4 Van Uytvanck "I definitely feel like game-wise I back myself pretty much against anyone. I think she was the top seed at the time. Raducanu 6 - 4 1 - 1 Van Uytvanck*
