CLARE's senior footballers were outclassed by Derry falling to a fourteen point defeat to end their involvement in the All-Ireland SFC. Derry 5-13
Holes continued to appear in the Clare defence, they were duly exploited by Derry but never closed by the Banner management or players. What will cause annoyance and frustration is how easily Derry managed to pull the trigger for each of their five green flags in what was an uncharacteristically poor defensive performance from the men in saffron and blue. The Clare goal gave a glimpse of what they can do, Jamie Malone teed up Podge Collins who fed Ciaran Russell and he found Pearse Lillis to rifle the net.

Paul Cassidy buries a shot into the roof of the net after an excellent pass from McGuigan in the tackle. Clare 1-2 Derry 2-6 (32′) McGuigan adds another. The second half is underway and it could be a long one for Clare unless they can kick some early scores! Centre back Gareth McKinless then shows his gears to tear through the Clare defence at the other end and rifle in a fourth goal. Clare 2-7 Derry 5-13 (65′) There’s so much space in the Clare full back line now and McGuigan is picking them apart. Clare 1-3 Derry 4-7 (40′) Derry centre forward Shea Downey makes a terrific block at one end. But Derry’s reply is ruthless, McCluskey joins the attack again and plays a backdoor handpass to McGuigan who grabs goal number five. McGuigan from the edge of the D then kicks a lovely point.

But they had two by the 13th minute as inevitability hung over the outcome from that early stage amid a flat Croke Park atmosphere that is typical of curtain raisers. In a move that mirrored that which led to Lillis’s goal at the other end, McGuigan placed Paul Cassidy to rifle past O’Callaghan from a narrow angle in first half injury time as Derry led 3-6 to 1-3 at the break and were well on their way to a first semi-final in 18 years. Their bubble soon burst, however.

Clare finally got off the mark through an Eoin Cleary free two minutes later but any glimmer of hope flickered out for the Banner just before the break when a Pearse Lillis goal in the 33rd minute was wiped out in injury-time when Paul Cassidy found the net to ease Derry into a 3-6 to 1-3 interval cushion. Two first quarter goals effectively tore up Clare’s gameplan as having frustrated Derry to four early wides, Colm Collins side coughed up two goals in the space of four minutes through Benny Heron and Conor Glass at 2-2 to 0-0 by the 13th minute. McGuigan then got the goal his performance deserved in the 48th minute and almost struck a second late on when he pounced on an errant kick-out. Just when it looked like Clare might be capable of reeling in what was at one stage a 10-point deficit, they coughed up a third goal to Derry just moments before half-time. Clare's Championship campaign is over and Derry march on to a first All-Ireland semi-final since 2004. If the Ulster final taught us anything about Derry, it's that they're entirely comfortably playing a patient, counter-attacking game so the seven-point lead played right into their hands. It all added up to a 3-6 to 1-3 half-time lead for Derry who went a long way towards killing the contest with a fourth goal from McKinless early in the second-half. They finally gained a foothold in the contest after 30 minutes of difficulties though and reeled off 1-2 in a matter of four minutes - Pearse Lillis cracking in a 34th minute goal - to reduce the lead to six points.
