What makes Mick Fitzsimons tick as he bids for a record ninth All ... (Irish Mirror)

It is the veteran Dublin defender's attention to detail, resilience, determination and versatility, according to long time Cuala team-mate Luke Keating, ...

He just plays the game and helps the team." When Pat Gilroy came looking for new blood in the wake of the 'startled earwigs', Fitzsimons was high on his list. It's not just his ability but his determination to achieve something with the club. "He has maintained his strengths and retained a keen interest in the changes that happen in the game." Fitzsimons is driven, on and off the pitch. He's level headed enough to decide on his future without being influenced by results." "He's down to earth in that way, he's not a superstar - he's been very happy to be in the backfield and not the spotlight. "You look at how he performed in his debut season with Dublin, how football was played then and is played now, and he's one of those players who has stayed in the same position all the time. "Defending is his main passion, he is willing to go one on one against the game's best players and take that chance. "He has a lot of belief in himself and is a confident person, though the reason I'm on the phone to you and not him is that he's very conscious of the line between confidence and arrogance. "It hasn't all been plain sailing, he was out of the team in certain years but it shows his character even more that he didn't throw his toys out of the pram and kept fighting. He seized the opportunity and was in the Dublin team that broke the mould in 2011.

LIVE: All-Ireland quarter-finals - Derry v Clare (The Irish Times)

The Ulster champions meet underdogs Clare in Croke Park, follow the action with Eamon Donoghue . . .

Derry punish a poor Clare kickout with some quick hands and then a smart finish! Clare 0-1 Derry 2-2 (21′) Paul Cassidy fists wide from close range when a goal chance might have even been on. The Clare kickout that follows is a good one, finding Jamie Malone down the right wing . Clare create the overlap and from a tight angle Pearse Lillis picks out the top corner! HT Clare 1-3 Derry 3-6 A brilliant point from Eoin Cleary is exactly what Clare needed after the goal. Paul Cassidy buries a shot into the roof of the net after an excellent pass from McGuigan in the tackle. Clare 1-2 Derry 2-6 (32′) McGuigan adds another. The second half is underway and it could be a long one for Clare unless they can kick some early scores! Centre back Gareth McKinless then shows his gears to tear through the Clare defence at the other end and rifle in a fourth goal. Clare 2-7 Derry 5-13 (65′) There’s so much space in the Clare full back line now and McGuigan is picking them apart. Clare 1-3 Derry 4-7 (40′) Derry centre forward Shea Downey makes a terrific block at one end. But Derry’s reply is ruthless, McCluskey joins the attack again and plays a backdoor handpass to McGuigan who grabs goal number five. McGuigan from the edge of the D then kicks a lovely point.

All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals: All you need to know (RTE.ie)

We cast an eye over the Croke Park encounters, with semi-final places up for grabs.

"Mayo are just hard to predict, they are the type of team that play to the level of the opposition. "Kerry learned from last year that beating Tyrone by as much as they did didn't count for a whole lot when it came to the championship and the feeling is very much the same now. David Clifford was out with a calf injury in the final win over Limerick, but he is set to start on Sunday. Like Dublin, the Kingdom have enjoyed an easy run of things up to know. Fifteen points was the margin of victory in the latter; a day when Mayo were cast aside with ease. Their attack is as good as any in the country; they will feel they can outscore the opposition even if it's a scorefest. On that occasion, the Kingdom ran out 10-point winners in a Super 8s clash. However, the manner in which they laboured to a Delaney Cup win in 2021 and the subsequent loss to Mayo, would indicate that Farrell's men are much more focused this year. The intensity, which was lacking in their championship opener, is now there for all to see. A first sign that Gallagher's work was paying off was in last year's Ulster quarter-final and that narrow loss to Donegal. No chance to enter the back-door only heightened the frustration. Leinster success for Dessie Farrell's side was easier than expected, with Kildare put to the sword early on in the final. Kerry are favoured to get over Mayo, even though the latter could bring a box of frogs to Croker. All bets are off then. Highlights on The Sunday Game, RTÉ2 and RTÉ Player from 9.30pm. Kerry blow Westmeath away to confirm place in All-Ireland quarter ... (Independent.ie)

LGFA ALL-IRELAND SFC GROUP C. Kerry 2-17. Westmeath 0-9. A comprehensive – and expected – win over Westmeath saw half-time substitute Rachel Dwyer score 1-5 ...

The goal effectively killed off any chance that Westmeath had and rendered the result a foregone conclusion thereafter. Kerry took off Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh at half time, but her replacement Rachel Dwyer certainly didn’t weaken the cause and she went on to have a really good game. The first quarter was everything that Kerry would have wished for.
