In fact, Wexford saw one of the highest levels of inward migration since 2016, with 9,487 people opting to move here. In fact, Wexford saw the fifth highest number for estimated net migration in Ireland. With the public having completed census forms back in April, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) has now revealed that Wexford has seen a rise to 163,527 or 9.2%. Co Wexford has a vacancy rate of 7.5%, which is relatively in-fitting with the rest of the south east, Kilkenny recording 7.7%, Carlow 7.2% and Waterford 7.1%. In Wexford, 1.9% of properties were vacant in both the 2016 and 2022 census. However, all counties saw a population growth since 2016, the highest being Longford with 14.1% and the lowest being Limerick and Donegal with 4.2%. One of the notable aspects of the preliminary report is that, while population in Wexford increased by 9.2%, in the same period the total housing stock for the county rose just 5.6%. The numbers serve to illustrate the current housing crisis we find ourselves in and how a combination of new people arriving into the county and natural increase has us playing catch up.

Census 2022 results lead to suggestion of new six-seat constituencies (The Irish Times)

The State's population has risen above five million but new homes lagged the latest growth in numbers, the first Census 2022 data shows.

The population growth could have electoral implications. In a sign of the pressure on the housing sector, the preliminary census data showed that Kildare was the only county that experienced higher growth in housing than in its population. The latest census shows a continuation of population growth that began in the early 1990s.

What does Census 2022 tell us about Ireland and its population? (The Irish Times)

In other words, the population rose because births have been outstripping deaths over the past six years and, at the same time, more people moved into the State than left. The emigration-immigration flows are more easily explained by the improved economic fortunes of recent years. The early data shows the Government is not keeping up. It will be next year before the CSO can provide a more detailed breakdown to understand the difference in the two periods. The rate of increase in the past six years was twice the increase seen in the previous five years when the State was still dealing with the fallout of a crippling financial crisis and economic crash. A more detailed analysis of what the census figures actually mean will not be available until fuller data is published next year.
