A garda investigation is under way after the discovery of two bodies in a house in south Tipperary this afternoon.

It is understood there is no indication of foul play at the moment. Members of the Garda Technical Bureau arrived at the scene this evening to carry out a forensic examination of the house and the vicinity of the property. The bodies were found after locals raised concerns about the whereabouts of two people believed to have been living in the house in the Cloneen area, between Fethard and Mullinahone.

Clonmel gardaí are leading the investigation and have appealed for anyone with information on the last known movements of the couple to contact them. There was no sign of a disturbance in the house and there was no sign of any forced entry. One of the couple is understood to have a history of health issues. They alerted a local county councillor for advice, and the councillor is understood to have contacted gardaí, who gained access to the premises yesterday afternoon and discovered the bodies of the couple. The alarm was raised yesterday when a local wondered why there was no sign of activity at the house but the cars belonging to the couple remained parked at the back of the property.

While gardaí are keeping an open mind on the deaths of the couple the house has been declared a crime scene. They have also established the Smiths told several people in the area around November 2020 that they were moving to France, and they paid a local man in advance to continue cutting their grass, leading many people to believe that they had left the area and the house was unoccupied. The bodies were discovered around 1pm on Monday afternoon when gardaí called to carry out a welfare check on the couple after neighbours became concerned and they found the body of Mr Smith in a bedroom and the body of Ms Smith in the livingroom.
