Offaly just didn't turn up and Westmeath scored at will in a game with pretty much zero intensity. The fact Westmeath goalie, Jason Daly wasn't forced to kick ...
GOAL! Westmeath 1-04 Offaly 0-00 Cathal Flynn with a lovely goal. Westmeath 2-12 Offaly 1-06 Westmeath 3-22 Offaly 2-16 That tells a story about the pressure on the shooter. WESTMEATH 3-22 OFFALY 2-16
Westmeath will meet Cavan in the Tailteann Cup final, after a dominant 3-22 to 2-16 victory over Offaly.
A stunning top-corner strike from Offaly sub Cathal Flynn in the 61st minute was already chalked down as a consolation score. A string of Niall McNamee frees were not enough to keep John Maughan's team in the hunt. Two Anton Sullivan points before the break ensured Offaly had some faint hope, but Westmeath were full value for their 2-11 to 1-6 half-time lead. Nigel Harte for James Dolan (69) Offaly needed another goal to make a game of it, but it was not forthcoming. Jack McEvoy for Ruairí McNamee (65) Cathal Flynn for Jack Bryant (52) James Lalor for Conor McNamee (ht) A Niall McNamee free made it 1-5 to 1-1, but Westmeath came again. The Lake County stormed into a 1-4 to 0-0 lead, and were dominating the contest. The Faithful County eventually scored in the 17th minute. Heslin could have added a third major.
A very impressive Westmeath coasted into the Tailteann Cup final with a convincing win over neighbours Offaly in Croke Park this afternoon.
Sub Cathal Flynn did get a superb 60th minute goal for them but with a 3-18 to 2-12 difference, it was only of cosmetic interest at that stage and Westmeath cruised into the final. 💻 https://t.co/6oQCE0HCoL… Both sides got four points each before the break and Westmeath had one foot in the final with that eight point half-time lead. Westmeath had nine wides in the first half and many of these should have been scores as they opened up Offaly time and time again with remarkable ease. 💻 https://t.co/6oQCE0HCoL… The victors played very well on the day, controlling the game from start to finish and never looked like being beaten for one second.
AS strains of The Westmeath Bachelor filled the air around Croke Park, there was a sense the GAA's forced championship divorce might yet lead to a s.
Ronan O’Toole was pulling the strings for Westmeath while John Heslin caused the Offaly defence all sorts of problems - finishing the game with 0-8. Offaly, who were without a number of players through injury, were flat from the off and physically out-muscled by Westmeath all over the field. Offaly’s opening score came in the 17th minute after some quick thinking by Niall McNamee, who capitalised on Westmeath zoning out momentarily after conceding a free. Westmeath had no wides in the second half. For the GAA, a Cavan-Westmeath decider at Croke Park prior to an All-Ireland SFC semi-final on Saturday July 9 is as good a combination as they could have hoped for in the first year of the Tailteann Cup. And I think that, more so than anything else, would be a huge incentive for the lads now.
And so, the inaugural Tailteann Cup will have the final that everyone expected. The belief was that if Westmeath and Cavan avoided each other, a situation.
Just as with Cavan, there was a sense that Westmeath were a Division two side in Division three clothing - and that was the impression from this match. Dylan Hyland impressed coming off the bench, scoring three points and adding a bit of steel to their defensive effort. It showed in this performance, although Mickey Graham and Cavan might be a tougher nut to crack. Conceding such a big score at HQ could hurt the confidence of the team but let's hope it doesn't affect Offaly's next generation too badly. And so, the inaugural Tailteann Cup will have the final that everyone expected. Also they hadn't quite got over veteran defender Niall Darby's cruciate ligament injury, suffered in training last week, or the stomach bug which ripped through their camp.
