Faithful boss John Maughan did some good groundwork in the lead-up to the Tailteann Cup, painting a positive picture of it at every possible opportunity. Against Fermanagh, Thomas Galligan won the throw-in, drove down the centre of the Erne defence and fired low to the net. Offaly and Westmeath know each other very well at this stage, very well indeed – and that should lead to competitive Tailteann Cup semi-final. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the occasion or the game," McEntee cautioned. In the first round against Down, goalkeeper Raymond Galligan produced a stunning kicking display and ended the day with 0-07 to his name. Manager Tony McEntee is bringing a young squad to Dublin with 22 clubs represented and seven players aged 21 or under. Their last five clashes have included a draw and two one-point wins. “It's a great sign of the squad that the lads bought in to what we want to do. Let's give this a good cut and see where it gets us and that it was a stepping stone of making the last 15 of the qualifiers next season. “They're just striving to improve. Sligo have had their chances in attack but have fluffed their lines; they really need to get on the board soon. I think we have had four or five games in championship, which is already a third of what Niall Murphy would have had before that. “So we thought if we do this but the players aren’t on board then it won’t make much sense. Conor Brady clips a point over with his left foot and Cavan are now six clear. Cavan then reply with a point of their own at the other end. 13 mins gone 15 mins gone 19 mins gone 22 mins gone

The tributes flowed online from a sporting network that saw multiple lives touched by the gifted attacker with an elegant skillset and a fierce attitude. “That was a hard topic for the squad to take.

Sligo had another wide deep in injury time and when Alan Reilly and Carrabine (free) scored, Cavan were two up and hanging on for dear life. Gerry Smith landed the next two, in the 65th and 72nd minutes, either side of two poor Sligo wides. A cool penalty from Patrick O’Connor in the 20th minute, after Luke Towey had been felled by Gerry Smith, dragged them back into contention.

Cavan have made history by becoming the first ever team to reach the Tailteann Cup final, after they beat Sligo in a very entertaining game at Croke Park.

However, the game management by Mickey Graham's team proved to be the difference, and performances from the likes of Killian Clarke in defence and Gearóid McKiernan at the other end always gave their team a little bit of breathing room throughout the game. A dull but controlled Cavan performance looked to be on the cards today, until a Patrick O'Connor penalty brought them right back into the game, and they managed to keep in touching distance until the very end. Offaly: N McNamee 0-6f, K O’Neill 1-2, D Hyland 0-3, C Flynn 1-0, A Sullivan 0-2, J Bryant, M Abbott and J McEvoy 0-1 each. Seconds earlier, a gilt-edged chance at a third goal went a-begging when John Heslin’s finish ricocheted off Luke Loughlin’s back. By the fourteenth minute of this midland derby, the Maroons were four up thanks to scores from John Heslin (2), Sam McCartan and Lorcan Dolan. But there was concern about aspects of the Lake County’s shot selection, as they racked up a total of six wides in that first quarter, finishing the half with nine.

Tailteann Cup: Cavan hang on against spirited Sligo to reach final (The Irish Times)

Cavan weathered the storm, doing just enough to remain in pole position despite the excellence of Murphy.

Cavan carved out five decent chances, the best of those falling to McKiernan late in the first-half and early in the second-half. Jason McLoughlin, for me, was everywhere but that’s what you want and definitely the experience probably told a wee bit in the end. The wonder was that there was just one goal scored. I don’t know but in the 40 minutes that he was on the field, he was brilliant. They showed great resolve to dig in during the final 15 minutes or so and were superbly led again by Gearoid McKiernan and, next to him, Gerard Smith. “It was fitting for him he started here in Croke Park because he’s been a fabulous servant to Sligo football for many years.”

Tailteann Cup semi-final: Cavan 0-20 Sligo 1-14 From Brendan Crossan at Croke Park FROM the outset, the Tailteann Cup was always in need of a hard sell.

Still, McEntee’s young side could easily have been in front at the break, instead of trailing 0-11 to 1-3. Galligan had his effort saved and James Smith missed the target. Tailteann Cup: Rampant Westmeath flex their muscles and make ... (The Irish Times)

Offaly manager John Maughan non-committal on his future after his side were 'comprehensively outplayed' in Tailteann Cup semi-final.

So, whether it was a Tailteann Cup or whether it was the qualifiers . . . like, every county team is developing and we have a number of players in there that were never in Croke Park until we played Kildare here. And we’ve a couple of lads outside of the 26 that I invited up, just to tog out in a dressing-room, and they’re mad excited. Lorcan Dolan nailed his second goal of the day on 53 minutes after a strong run through the middle from full-back Kevin Maguire and that was that. It was just a question from half-time onwards of playing for pride, playing for the jersey and that kind of stuff. The Westmeath goal came at the end of a run from deep by centre-back Ronan Wallace, who brushed off a turnstile tackle from young Offaly corner-back Lee Pearson along the way before burying his finish. Offaly were poor here, never recovering from a desperate start in which they went 1-4 to 0-0 down inside the opening quarter-hour.

Westmeath will meet Cavan in the Tailteann Cup final, after a dominant 3-22 to 2-16 victory over Offaly.

A stunning top-corner strike from Offaly sub Cathal Flynn in the 61st minute was already chalked down as a consolation score. A string of Niall McNamee frees were not enough to keep John Maughan's team in the hunt. Two Anton Sullivan points before the break ensured Offaly had some faint hope, but Westmeath were full value for their 2-11 to 1-6 half-time lead. Nigel Harte for James Dolan (69) Offaly needed another goal to make a game of it, but it was not forthcoming. Jack McEvoy for Ruairí McNamee (65) Cathal Flynn for Jack Bryant (52) James Lalor for Conor McNamee (ht) A Niall McNamee free made it 1-5 to 1-1, but Westmeath came again. The Lake County stormed into a 1-4 to 0-0 lead, and were dominating the contest. The Faithful County eventually scored in the 17th minute. Heslin could have added a third major.
