She hit a fantastic wood cut shot around the trees on to the green from an unlikely position, but she three-putted for par, as Kupchko birdied. The Cavan woman started in blistering form with four birdies in her first six holes, a sole bogey at the third hole.

However it was now Maguire's turn to three-putt from distance and Kupcho birdied to claim glory. Remarkably, she missed and with Korda only able to make par, Maguire's two-putt birdie from 30 feet was good enough to force things to a second playoff hole where it was now a two-horse race. But it looked as though it would be over as soon as it began when world No.16 Kupcho hit a stunning second into the 18th to leave herself with an eagle putt from no more than a couple of feet.

"I gave it my all" - Leona Maguire focuses on positives after playoff ... (SportsJOE.ie)

Standing on the 18th tee, with US Solheim Cup stars Nelly Korda and Jennifer Kupcho looking on, Leona Maguire showed no playoff fear.

"When Leona hit [her eagle putt] by the hole and I still had to putt from the fringe, I thought to myself, that's not a gimme because I was just shaking and missed essentially a same-length putt. I thought she was in." On that first hole, Maguire and Kupcho birdied and Korda could not match it, meaning she was out. The American gets another career tour title, a winners' cheque of $375,000 and could rise into the world top 10 when the rankings get updated, later today. So it wonderfully transpired as she reeled off eight birdies in a -7 closing round of 65. Let’s do it again!
