How to Make it a Productive and Exciting Father's Day (Entrepreneur)

Father's Day comes and goes every year. It's easy to get complacent and go to the card aisle at the local grocery store for a Father's Day gift and call...

Father's Day can be far more than just grilling with the family and a handmade card. Whatever your dad and his friends enjoy doing but rarely get the opportunity to do so should be your focus. But if they're open to something, it might just be what the group as a whole would most enjoy for the day. Set up a dad date if your dad is the social type but rarely has time for activities outside the home or workplace. Having the whole family agree to participate in an adventure, not in the regular routine, could be especially meaningful to your dad. But after all, it's one day a year, so just make sure the ladder is secure — and let him fiddle. From father-son lookalike contests to entries that require you to write about your dad's qualities, you can show off your dad in a public space. A wide variety of local contests can be a fun way to celebrate your dad. At the bare minimum, you can find that embarrassing family picture of your dad and share it with the world. But what if there was a way to make the day more memorable or productive for your dad? The trick to making your dad's Father's Day a little more special than usual is by doing something that's appreciated or unexpected. For example, Ace Hardware recently announced a contest in which the winner receives a custom-made pair of grilling shoes and a grill.

Curious Questions: Did a mining disaster lead to the invention of ... (Country Life)

Curious Questions: Did a mining disaster lead to the invention of Father's Day? Martin Fone June 18, 2022.

It took the irresistible Americanisation of British culture after the Second World War and the welcome prospect of a mid-year fillip to the retail sector’s revenues to cement Father’s Day in the British calendar. ‘Ba’ is the Chinese word for eight and ‘ba-ba’ the colloquial term for father, making the Taiwanese choice of the eighth day of the eighth month — August 8th— as Father’s Day highly appropriate. Following America’s lead, the third Sunday of June was adopted as Father’s Day and its observance has gone from strength to strength. Whereas Mother’s Day was embraced with enthusiasm, the prevailing view was that men were not as sentimental as women and would be less receptive to gifts and overt expressions of gratitude and affection. Sonora was full of admiration for the way her father had risen to the daunting challenge and his devotion to his young family. In Catholic tradition there had been since the Middle Ages the Feast Day of St Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary, which is celebrated on March 19th. Despite Presidents Woodrow Wilson, in 1916, and Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, coming out strongly in favour of Father’s Day, Congress blocked any attempt to make it a national holiday. The public outcry following the sector’s annus horribilis led to the adoption of more stringent safety and working practices with the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mines in 1910. When Sonora was sixteen, her mother, Ellen, died after giving birth to her sixth child, leaving her father William — a farmer and Civil War veteran — to raise the young family single-handed. Parishioners gave out flowers, red roses to honour a living father and white in memory of a deceased father. She lobbied her local pastor, the Reverend Robert Thomas Webb, to hold a special service at the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South to celebrate fatherhood and what fathers do for their children. The small town of Monongah in West Virginia has the unenviable distinction of being the site of America’s worst mining disaster.

27 Last-Minute Father's Day Deals (2022) (WIRED)

It's late, but not too late. Hurry up and snag a killer gift on these smartwatches, headphones, and more.

The New Wayfarer has slightly smaller lenses and is less canted forward, so Pop can have all the style in a sleeker package. If Dad wants to give takeout the boot and get into cooking, this 17-piece set will form a solid basis for a kitchen loadout. From frying and sauce pans of varying sizes to a three-piece nylon cooking tool set, he'll have everything he needs to become the household's newest chef. And it does all of that at a budget price when many espresso machines cost a pretty penny. The Totallee is one of our favorite iPhone cases because it offers a bump in scratch and drop protection over a caseless phone, but at only 0.02 inches thick it's not chunky enough to make Dad feel like he's carrying a brick. Make sure Dad never recoils from a sip of off-putting, room-temperature java again with this rechargeable mug that'll let him keep his coffee (or tea) warm for up to 80 minutes. It includes an iPhone case that allows Dad to mount all three lenses that come with the kit. The Go Portal ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends) has a 10-inch display screen and can double as a Bluetooth speaker, but its standout feature is the smart camera automatically zooms and pans during video calls to make it look like there's a personal camera crew at work. Send Dad a digital photo frame to remind him of all the good times you've had together. It offers not just Bluetooth connectivity but also Wi-Fi. Part of the speaker's appeal is that it's also the cheapest way to join the Sonos ecosystem of devices. If Dad has a hard time falling asleep or waking in the morning, a sunrise clock could be just what he needs to ease his way into or out of bed. This model offers all the characteristic Strat chime and brightness with three single-coil pickups and a maple neck and fretboard.

BookLovers: A Fathers' Day Tribute (SouthCoastToday.com)

I tried, this week, to think of Great American Books about fatherhood. Hunted for passages and quotes that conveyed the epitome of fatherhood.

I wanted a book about the man with no e-mail. I wanted a story about the one whose form we imitated when we shot baskets on the street. I was looking for a book about a wood-chopper and sea glass-collector. I was looking for an example of a character who was some kind of Cowboy Poet. Guitar-picker and crossword-puzzler. The dad dragging hurdles and javelins back to the fieldhouse. That rich smoky smell and bird song in the golden afternoon light.

The Father's Day Gift Guide For Bitcoiners (Bitcoin Magazine)

Dad's don't necessarily need special or fancy gifts, but Bitcoiners want to make sure our dads have the Bitcoin tools and gadgets they need.

The stories in the magazine can help your dad view bitcoin as a fundamentally world-changing technological development. Another cool idea would be to get your dad his own Bitcoin full node to verify his own transactions and enforce the blockchain rules. Bitcoin is a hedge against inflation; it’s a hedge against tyranny. But for the dad who wants to treasure his new gift of bitcoin, I recommend starting with a wallet. Another route would be a subscription to the Bitcoin Magazine print edition. If he’s on the fence, this may help your dad hop onto the lifeboat. The Coldcard is a classic choice with tons of functionality. At 21 million bitcoin to go around, there’s not even enough for all the millionaires in the world to own a whole coin. The idea came from one of my Bitcoin buddies, who published an article about gifting his parents bitcoin using a Ballet physical wallet. Go ahead and have the kids draw some pictures and paint some rocks, things I proudly display in my office, and save a few bucks for something that will last for a while. Assuming we’ve avoided a hyperinflationary catastrophe, that’s probably still a pretty solid vacation for you and the family. I like to refer to many of the toys we get our kids as presents as “future trash.” It’s an unfortunate by-product of the fiat society we live in.

Why You Should Stack Sats To Celebrate Father's Day (Bitcoin Magazine)

It's not only the duty of the Bitcoin fathers out there, but the obligation to continue to stack sats for our children.

This is our duty, not only to give our kids an alternative to the future, but to share the knowledge that is required for them to be successful in it as well. For all of the Bitcoin fathers out there, take time to reflect on your journey down the Bitcoin rabbit hole and how you will be able to share that knowledge with your kids. It is our obligation as fathers to set our kids up for success. With kids as young as mine, they won't be able to send me sats for Father’s Day this year, and that’s OK. It’s my duty and any other father’s out there — new, old or just becoming a dad — to stack sats for our kids. I can't predict the future or begin to know the shape of it, but what I know today is that Bitcoin gives me a sense of hope and a degree of freedom from current economic and geopolitical happenings, because I am able to pass something of value on to them. If your dad is like mine and the rest of my family, they probably have little to no interest in Bitcoin. To this day, when I call my parents they ask me how “Bit-CON” is doing.

Father's Day once was highly political — and could become so again (The Washington Post)

The holiday's lack of history allowed activists to give it meaning after America's divorce laws changed.

The Seattle-based organization Husbands Against Dirty Divorce (HADD) planned a Father’s Day brunch in 1986 to bring attention to the fact that the holiday was not accorded the same respect as the other spring holidays. The politicization of Father’s Day has subsided since the 1980s. By the 1980s, fathers’ rights groups across the country planned events and protests to mark the holiday, often focusing on calls for a legal presumption of joint custody. Over time, lawmakers on the state and federal levels responded to the critiques of the no-fault divorce system that drove Father’s Day advocacy on both sides. Fathers’ rights advocates objected to being used as “wallets” and claimed that their ex-wives purposely kept them from seeing their children in violation of visitation orders. The experience of divorce drew many White, middle-class women to the burgeoning women’s movement. The majority of divorcing couples in the early to mid-20th century did not have children, but the “tender years doctrine” meant that in most cases, mothers retained custody of their minor children if they did. No-fault divorce laws, however, did not deal with some of the most contested aspects of marital dissolution, especially questions about finances and child custody. The entire landscape changed in 1969, with the advent of no-fault divorce. These former housewives and newly single mothers — the vast majority of whom had custody of their children — also complained vociferously about their difficulties in collecting alimony (if awarded) and child support, further contributing to their precarious financial circumstances. This understanding of Father’s Day, though, misses the ways in which Americans have used the holiday as a political vehicle. By the mid-20th century, many Americans regarded this “fault” system as something of a joke.

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there (Laois Nationalist)

My father Liam is in his late 70's now and still in great health both in body and mind and I look forward to the many years ahead of shared memories. Darragh ...

And if the answer comes from the values that have been passed down to me – honesty, compassion, integrity, kindness, forgiveness, understanding, all taught by example over a lifetime, I will know that I will have succeeded as a father. This is how I learned the lessons from my father and they are life-long lessons that I am constantly trying to remember and pass on to my children and, just as importantly, to remember for myself, in order to be not only a good father but a good person, husband, friend. It is only when you become a father and feel this for your own children that you can finally understand the power of love and what you wouldn’t do for them as a father to protect, to love, to hug, to share, to cuddle for as long as you can. And the answer to that question always sets me on the right track. Because you know it is fleeting and you know you will be looking at an empty bedroom one day as they start the next chapter of their life that is no longer under your roof. My father Liam is in his late 70’s now and still in great health both in body and mind and I look forward to the many years ahead of shared memories.

You could argue that Joseph Cooper isn't the greatest dad for disappearing from the lives of his two children for basically a lifetime – but he’s doing so to save them, and the planet. Nemo’s dad travels some 2,000 kilometres to find his lost son – quite a lot for a tiny clown fish in the big ocean. But he rises to the occasion when he has to keep a promise to his son about getting him a toy for Christmas, which unfortunately appears to be sold out in every shop in the city. He defies classic tropes of toxic masculinity, he cries, has the best advice and he’s endlessly funny. Lawyer Atticus Finch is the very definition of a moral dad, a man who lives up to his ideals and fights for justice. Zelensky in Father's Day message praises dads who defend Ukraine (The Washington Post)

The war with Russia has killed 100 to 200 soldiers, most of them men, every day, Ukrainian officials say.

The weapons: Ukraine is making use of weapons such as Javelin antitank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones, provided by the United States and other allies. Stoltenberg’s forecast, in an interview published Saturday in Germany’s Bild newspaper, comes as the United States and its allies are preparing for a drawn-out conflict. The fight: A slowly regenerating Russian army is making incremental gains in eastern Ukraine against valiant but underequipped Ukrainian forces. “We are doing everything we can to ensure that children will see their parents returning home from war,” the parliament’s caption said. And no matter how difficult it is — to protect and defend the most precious. In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper in April, he spoke fondly of his teenage daughter and joked that “without knocking the door, I can’t speak with my daughter.”

A son's gift on Father's Day? The art of listening (Los Angeles Times)

A son finally sees a side of his father he has heard about for years: rock 'n' roll singer.

Singer and show regular Bobby Sherman once told my colleague David Wharton that “Shindig!” was the forerunner of MTV, a manual of sorts on how to do rock ‘n’ roll on screen. The Righteous Brothers were virtual regulars on “Shindig!” appearing in more than 20 episodes. “We were doing an act,” Dad said. “And I think it was about six weeks after that I decided we were moving out.” Then it was time for the credits to roll. “I can’t imagine you moving like this!” said my sister, Nalena, marveling at the performance on-screen. I sped ahead to see the Righteous Brothers in action. I was searching for the moment when L.A. radio personality Jimmy O’Neill introduced the next act performing a new dance called “Jamaica Ska” and a song with the same title. The crossover drew the ire of some locals, and word got back to my grandparents. British music producer Jack Good, an ardent fan of rock ‘n’ roll, had been given the go-ahead by ABC to create a new take on the music show. For an 80-year-old man, the timing of going into the hospital and having an extended stay in another facility to recuperate raised concerns for our family. As several of my father’s friends from Nashville would attest over the years, the quartet was a draw back then.

An unexpected Father's Day trip down memory lane (NBC Sports)

The longer I do this, the more I wonder why I do it. This endless stream of news and analysis and opinion and whatever disappears into the electronic ether ...

Every day. Every day. Every day. It also should be a day when all fathers recommit to their obligations and responsibilities. I tried to searched for it in the box at the top of the site. This endless stream of news and analysis and opinion and whatever disappears into the electronic ether almost as fast as I can hunt and peck it into existence.
