Live All-Ireland hurling quarter-final: Galway vs Cork (The Irish Times)

Nathan Johns guides you through all the action from Thurles in the day's first hurling action.

Down the other end, Galway add to their lead through Cathal Mannion. 1 min: Disaster for Cork! Jack Grealish launches a speculative long-range point which drops short but Patrick Collins in the Cork goal has taken his eye off it! The radar isn’t working but it is now as Murphy has to pull off a stunning save in the Galway goal seconds later. 8 mins: Cathal Mannion jumps into the air in celebration after winning a free out while tracking back. 9 mins: Another Cork wide, this time from Connolly straight off the puck-out. 18 mins: Cork are trying to get the ball up to Connolly but the pass is a poor one to him. A scrappy ball lets Cork mop up but when steps are called Cooney is able to put one over the bar for Galway. They needed that after a fair few wides of their own. 20 mins: Seven first half wides now for Cork as Lehane misses a long free from the sideline. Now Galway strike a wide, this time Fahy from range. Cooney then strikes one from a narrow angle yet again as Galway stretch their lead. There’s a break here as McInerney is lying on the floor with his helmet off receiving treatment. The last championship meeting between the pair came back in 2015, Galway coming out on top again in an All-Ireland quarter-final by 12 points.

Expected wins by Cork and Wexford at the weekend have set up an intriguing quarter-final double decker at the Stadium today, Saturday: Cork v Galway and Wexford ...

Drom goalie, Eoin Collins, went upfield to plant a penalty goal early in the second half and Seamus Callanan produced the only item of magic when he did a Darragh Fitzgibbon, racing through from midfield and firing in an unstoppable shot to the roof of the Clonoulty net. Stephen Ferncombe pointed two frees and then caught the defensive wall out with a twenty-metre free that he drilled to the net. Clonoulty, short around half their first-choice fifteen, fielded mostly a second string and by the end it was all embarrassingly one-sided. A double header featuring division 1 and 2 deciders on Saturday at the Stadium was meant to be the highlight of the programme. Substitute Aidan Griffin played a leading part in the recovery, coming on and landing five points, two from play, at a crucial juncture. County Under 20 player, Kyle Shelly, had been very ineffective for Moycarkey and was replaced in the second half. Niall Heffernan goaled and Kieran Morris was excellent on the frees. It’s a move that has raised the hackles of some. Surely a wrong action by the referee deserves a review every bit as much as when he takes no action. A game of that intensity has to carry a heavy toll, both physically and emotionally. The policy has always been that a review was only initiated if the referee failed to take any action during the game. Incidentally, I don’t go with the argument that because the game was so outstanding in other ways, we should ignore these incidents.

But to me, everything points to a Clare and Cork double at the weekend. So although Clare are missing a couple of players, they’ll be well drilled for this match, I still think they’ll have enough to get over the line and book a place in the semi-finals against Kilkenny. There’s a man of the match double for you as well, there’s decent odds in this market. Even if they are missing those two players, all the talk coming out of Clare is that there’s gonna be a siege mentality. For Clare, all the talk is about trilogies, playing Limerick in the final, and what that rematch is gonna be like. You’ve also got to factor in the venue – Cork like playing at Thurles and their supporters like travelling there.

For Cork the season ends as it began, in disappointment. To be fair the quality overall from both candidates picked up in the second half. Late in the half that run of three consecutive points was cohesion beyond a Cork side whose shooting disintegrated almost totally. On 26 minutes it was 2-2 to 0-5: a Tailteann Cup scoreline, but Galway surged with three points on the bounce, an outrageous Whelan effort the pick of the bunch. There’s an argument that Galway probably lost the first-half battle on almost every metric - Cork slashed through their rearguard and muzzled their attack for long stretches - except one. After the Wagnerian drama of the Munster final this was comic opera at times, particularly in the first half.

Antrim led by one at the break and the Rebels had the likes of Séamus Harnedy and Darragh Fitzgibbon to thank as they jumpstarted the revival in the second half and pushed Cork on towards victory. A five point loss against Kilkenny in the Leinster decider was a disappointment for a Galway side who looked as though they were building momentum at just the right time prior to the defeat against Brian Cody's side.
