The last championship meeting between the pair came back in 2015, Galway coming out on top again in an All-Ireland quarter-final by 12 points.

County Under 20 player, Kyle Shelly, had been very ineffective for Moycarkey and was replaced in the second half. Niall Heffernan goaled and Kieran Morris was excellent on the frees. It’s a move that has raised the hackles of some. Surely a wrong action by the referee deserves a review every bit as much as when he takes no action. A game of that intensity has to carry a heavy toll, both physically and emotionally. The policy has always been that a review was only initiated if the referee failed to take any action during the game. Incidentally, I don’t go with the argument that because the game was so outstanding in other ways, we should ignore these incidents.

Cork are favourites and that might surprise a few people. The reason for that is because of how poor Galway were in that Leinster final, it was an abysmal ...

But to me, everything points to a Clare and Cork double at the weekend. So although Clare are missing a couple of players, they’ll be well drilled for this match, I still think they’ll have enough to get over the line and book a place in the semi-finals against Kilkenny. There’s a man of the match double for you as well, there’s decent odds in this market. Even if they are missing those two players, all the talk coming out of Clare is that there’s gonna be a siege mentality. For Clare, all the talk is about trilogies, playing Limerick in the final, and what that rematch is gonna be like. You’ve also got to factor in the venue – Cork like playing at Thurles and their supporters like travelling there.

For Cork the season ends as it began, in disappointment. To be fair the quality overall from both candidates picked up in the second half. Late in the half that run of three consecutive points was cohesion beyond a Cork side whose shooting disintegrated almost totally. On 26 minutes it was 2-2 to 0-5: a Tailteann Cup scoreline, but Galway surged with three points on the bounce, an outrageous Whelan effort the pick of the bunch. There’s an argument that Galway probably lost the first-half battle on almost every metric - Cork slashed through their rearguard and muzzled their attack for long stretches - except one.
