Russian 'spy' recalled by Trinity College students (RTE.ie)

An alleged Russian spy - who was expelled by authorities in the Netherlands - had previously studied in Trinity College, Dublin.

I wrote a reference letter for a GRU officer. I wrote him a letter. After the graduation he asked for a reference letter for the ICC [International Criminal Court]. I feel angry, I feel stupid, I feel naive, I feel tired. "Then they will be used to infiltrate Western organisations. I had him in class.

The man, who Dutch intelligence officials claim is named Sergey Vladimirovich Cherkasov, used the Brazilian name of Victor Muller Ferreira.

“Cherkasov used a well-constructed cover identity by which he concealed all his ties with Russia in general, and the GRU in particular. Dutch intelligence agencies say that they have identified a Russian GRU agent who tried to intern at the ICC under a false Brazilian identity. The majority of interactions appear to be spam. Cherkasov went on to study American Foreign Policy in the US and worked as a freelance translator. The 36-year-old has been accused of being an agent of Russia’s GRU military intelligence. While living in Dublin, he also worked as an English teacher and offered grinds in maths.

Russian spy exposed trying to infiltrate Hague court studied in Ireland (The Irish Times)

Man's arrival at ICC would have coincided with investigations into alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

According to his CV — available online — while living in Dublin he also worked at the International Study Centre for just over a year. “I chatted to him a few times as he was in some of my lectures. He would tell me briefly he had gone motorcycling around Ireland on the weekends,” he added. The man had presented himself to people as a mature student from Brazil, he said. But he unwittingly was walking into a trap, and his true motives for seeking the job had been exposed by western intelligence officers. One of his former classmates in Trinity described the man as a “bit of a recluse”, who was known as an “elusive” person on the course.

“For that reason they often remain undetected, allowing them to carry out intelligence activities. Because of their alias identity, illegals are difficult to discover. Russian 'spy' arrested following Dutch operation 'not the only' agent ... (thejournal.ie)

Sergey Vladimirovich Cherkasov had studied in Ireland under the false Brazilian alias Viktor Muller Ferreira.

“On these grounds the intelligence officer was refused entry into the Netherlands in April and declared unacceptable. “He was here, the security services were aware of him. “The International Criminal Court was briefed by the Dutch authorities and is very thankful to The Netherlands for this important operation and more generally for exposing security threats,” spokeswoman Sonia Robla said in a statement to AFP. The head of the Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service, or AIVD, said it was “very rare” to catch a Russian agent “of this calibre”. It also tries to cover up doubts about his Brazilian heritage, saying that he was nicknamed “Gringo” because he “looked like a German” and includes full addresses of a restaurant in Brasilia with the “best brown stew in town” and a trance music club, in an apparent attempt to back up his cover story. Sources have said that Cherkasov is not the only GRU operative in Ireland, he was not directly attached to the Russian Embassy but was working “off side” for them.
