Plenty of PGA mainstays are also in Boston, led by Rory McIlroy, the 2011 U.S. Open champ, who has been outspoken in opposing LIV Golf. This time, he’s doing it with Saudi money. Men’s golf remains at the center of the sporting universe this week, as the world’s top players converge on the Country Club in Brookline, Mass. for the 122nd U.S. Open. After a tumultuous stretch that’s seen multiple star players defect from the PGA Tour in favor of the lucrative, Saudi-backed LIV Golf International Series, the USGA can only hope that the competition now seizes the spotlight.

Only Merion, with 19, has been the site of more, and the Open is scheduled to return there in 2030. And the Country Club has it.” “The ghosts of the past matter. “The players love this place,” Bodenhamer said. The Australian player Cameron Smith called the Country Club “my favorite U.S. Open venue I think I’ve been to. That year, the U.S. Open was held at Merion Golf Club, outside Philadelphia. It, too, has a small footprint and is in a residential suburban neighborhood. There is a short, downhill par-3 that hasn’t been used in a U.S. Open since 1913. But the tournament proved to be a success and soon Bodenhamer was in touch with officials at the Country Club to see if there was any interest in hosting a U.S. Open. There was. But the club is tucked away in an exclusive neighborhood in a Boston suburb with little room to accommodate the growing demands of modern major tournaments. “The footprint was small,” Bodenhamer said. Explaining the decision in 2002, John Cornish, the chairman of the 1999 Ryder Cup matches at the club, said, “we were faced with the need to downsize the scope of services, local corporations and the media. It was the site of arguably the most important moment in American golf history — the 1913 U.S. Open won by the amateur Francis Ouimet in a playoff over the celebrated British professionals Ted Ray and Harry Vardon.

Neither is the favorite at Brookline, though. Masters champion Scottie Scheffler and PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas are both looking to double up. The third major of the 2022 golf season has arrived with controversy swirling behind the scenes.
The third major of the year tees off today at Brookline in Boston with plenty of talking points.
12th, 473 yards, par 4: A slight dogleg right with two bunkers on the corner of the dogleg. 13th, 440 yards, par 4: The tee shot must be played at an angle to a fairway which turns from right to left. 10th, 499 yards, par 4: A slight dogleg from left to right features no fairway bunkers, but no fewer than six around the green. Bunkers protect the front and left of the green, but a welcome birdie opportunity. The added yardage and narrow fairway makes for a challenging combination. Bunkers left and right guard the entrance to a multi-tiered green which sits at a slight angle and offers tough pin positions. 1st, 488 yards, par 4: A testing opening hole plays slightly from right to left, with two bunkers guarding the corner of the dogleg. 3rd, 499 yards, par 4: The fairway narrows considerably around 310 yards from the tee, meaning some players could opt to lay further back to a wider landing area. Only one of the hole’s nine bunkers, right of the green, should pose many problems. Bunkers on either side guard a small green. Two bunkers well short of the green will not come into play for the professionals, but another brace short and long left await an errant tee shot. Laying back off the tee leaves a blind approach.

U.S. Open 2022 live updates: The latest news and analysis from our writers at the 122nd U.S. Open at Brookline.
6:48 a.m.: The action is officially underway at The Country Club! Michael Thorbjornsen, a 20-year-old amateur from Massachusetts teeing it up at Brookline (sound familiar?) had the honor of hitting the first tee shot off the first tee. What a great thrill for the 58-year-old. 8:03 a.m.: Hideki Matusyama sticks his tee shot at the par-3 11th hole, which is playing as the easiest hole on the course thus far, to grab a share of the lead. A tough early bogey from Spieth ... and just by the eye test, he doesn't look 100 percent post-stomach bug. Again, just like Spieth, people were down on Morikawa on the eve of the U.S. Open because he admitted to some reporters he was having trouble hitting a fade. Hopefully the Mighty Quinn's friends and family screenshotted that shot of the leaderboard while he was up there. And speaking of struggles, Hideki just double bogeyed the par-4 12th hole after that birdie at 11. 8:30 a.m.: Russell Henley is the first player to 2-under, birdieing the 10th and 12th holes early in his round. 9:14 p.m.: Maybe not the biggest name but qualifier Harry Hall with a beautiful shot on the par 3 11th just north of the hole. 8:40 a.m.: Henley has company at the top, as Collin Morikawa just rolled another nice birdie putt in at the fifth hole. Adam Scott doesn't put enough on it and the ball will find its way to the bottom of the steep eighth incline. Of course, the beauty of a U.S. Open are the never-ending storylines that its competitors present itself.

That's going to play as basically a 100-yard shot for the pros, I think, and that's just ... *chef's kiss.* He has a solo second and a T8 at the first two major tournaments this year, and this course is a really nice setup for him. The 2022 U.S. Open will be available via streaming on Peacock with exclusive windows as well as featured groups. In what has been somewhat of a downturn of a season after last year’s best-in-class form, this is the perfect opportunity for Rahm to get back on track. He has bogeyed Nos. 1, 3 and now 4, with a par at No. 2. None of this is secret anymore — hell, two decades have passed — but in Boston, old habits die hard, and when one guy from the neighborhood tells a story about another guy from the neighborhood, it’s best not to blab. Curtis Strange won the last U.S. Open at The Country Club, which was held in 1988. Like Southern Hills, designer Gil Hanse has been working with The Country Club to prepare for this U.S. Open. The ball rams into the jar and Leonard takes off running. “See over there,” the caddie says, pointing to a spot on the green. Those are the stories in the annals. A Rory or JT or Speith or Rahm. I think they all have a good chance.

Yes, yes, the LIV Tour has been hanging around the run-up to the 122nd US Open at Brookline like a bad smell. The 33-year-old from Georgia has yet to finish in the top ten, but he did tie for low amateur in 2010 at Pebble Beach, and enjoyed his best result last year at Torrey Pines with a tie for 13th. But it’s hosted three previous US Opens, won by Curtis Strange in 1988, Julius Boros in 1963, and most famously of all, the amateur Francis Ouimet in 1913. But let’s not allow it to linger, for none of the players involved with the breakaway tour are considered particularly likely winners of the USGA’s flagship event. He taps in for a second birdie and becomes the first man to reach -2. Henley is quickly joined at the top by Collin Morikawa. The reigning Open champion could be very dangerous here this week, with approach play at a premium to Brookline’s often small and tightly guarded greens. The second miss was a particular shame, as he’d sent a delightful short iron into 4, using the right-to-left slope of the green to gather his ball to four feet. Never the most accurate from the tee, he’s yet to hit one, and as a result he’s dropped shots at 1, 3 and 4. He’ll need all his scrambling genius this week, and he demonstrates that, too, getting up and down from sand at the short par-four 5th to haul himself back to +2. Spieth’s combined score for last four opening rounds at the US Open is +18. He’ll need to go some to put a dent into that surprisingly awful record today. Well, that’s not quite accurate: a missed cut at the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay, and that’s it for the 28-year-old South Carolinian. But he’s now a joint leader of this one. Not so the 2021 Masters champ Matsuyama, who followed birdie at 11 with a three-putt double bogey at 12. McIlroy’s paired with Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama. Schauffele – who has never finished lower than seventh in his five US Open appearances – has matched Rory shot for shot so far.
The New Zealander thinks everything is clicking right now with McIlroy's game as he seeks to end his eight-year Major drought.
“The week I played I drove it great, I think I averaged 10-11 fairways out of 14, and my distance control with my irons was great, as was my putting. So, the putting was great and my distance control with my irons was fantastic, it was a fun week and to beat Tiger was just so special.” Winning the US Open was fantastic but to beat the great man in the process was very special. For me, to beat Tiger in his prime, his absolute prime, was the ultimate prize. Campbell, to his credit, played the back nine in one-under to register a two-shot victory. I say this respectfully, but he has probably underachieved in that regard, but he is such a wonderful player and everything is clicking right now.”
The 122nd U.S. Open gets underway Thursday with the national championship taking place at one of the oldest golf courses in the United States.
The major championship record is poor, but take out his missed cuts at the PGA Championship and The Players Championship, and Cantlay has unbelievable this year. McIlroy has top 10s in three of his last four majors and three straight U.S. Opens. The fact that he hasn't captured one of these coveted championships since 2014 is obscene given some of the low rounds he's shot, but he finally seems to be back to form. This is the best Rory has played entering a major in quite a while, and he's even coming off a title defense at the RBC Canadian Open. McIlroy also seems to feel like he has the game of golf on his back given his staunch support of the PGA Tour and the traditions of the game. If he plays his game, he'll be in the mix, and we've already seen him this season hang with the big dogs with wins at The Players Championship and the Sentry Open plus top-five finishes at the Masters and the RSM Classic. Brookline is going to demand precisely what Smith can bring: a killer short game for its lightning-quick greens and precision off the tees for the numerous blind shots golfers will be making this week. J.T. is one of the three best iron players on the planet, and his hot putter has translated to wins and near wins for the last two months. He's playing the best golf of his career and has paired an ever-present confidence that nobody in the world is better than him with a wisdom that can only be attained with age and experience. The Olympian has pulled out of the 122nd U.S. Open citing health concerns. Four days of major championship golf on a menacing course in a terrific city. Behind them are Adam Scott, Max Homa and a 75% Jordan Spieth. For those of you not in the know, the three-time major winner is experiencing some tummy issues -- pro move not wearing white pants. Those two legends of the game make way for new ones as world No. 3 Rory McIlroy begin his quest for major No. 5 in the early hours of the first round. For all the nonsense that's happened this week, what better Day 1 story could there be than a lifelong journeyman whose son is serving as caddie leading after the first 18 holes?

If you want to see what every hole looks like, I recommend watching the video below... Diamond was absent last week at the RBC Canadian Open as he and his wife welcomed the arrival of their second child. For someone who is so good a lot of the time, Patrick Cantlay's Major record is pedestrian to say the least. Measuring at just 315 yards and downwind, this hole will see a lot of birdies today I think. After chopping it down the par-4 13th, Rory makes an excellent seven-foot putt for par to stay at level. A slight cut and he has 10 feet or so to get to one-under. Homa made his birdie putt by the way on the 6th and he is also to one-under. Amateur Travis Vick just missed a short birdie putt to do the same. Unfortunately I didn't see it because Sky wanted to take us down to the driving range instead... Great to see Rory start well again, just like he did at Southern Hills last month. Great to see him starting well after four consecutive Major missed cuts. England's Callum Tarren gets into the red thanks to a birdie at the 16th.
U.S. Open 2022: Rory McIlroy made a crucial, momentum-saving par at the par-4 fifth hole that he'll look back very fondly if he goes on to contend.
If the Northern Irishman goes onto contend at this U.S. Open, we will undoubtedly look back at this moment as one that saved his tournament. Turns out, that expletive paled in comparison to his reaction that would ensue. He let out an expletive when he arrived to find his lie.

The world No 3 followed last week's RBC Canadian Open victory by posting an opening-round 67 at The Country Club, mixing four birdies with a lone bogey to sit ...
"My caddie just kept saying, fairways, greens, pars are really good, and they are in a US Open. I think I made a birdie on one to get to even and then gave it straight back. "The guys in front of us were playing so slow," McIlroy added. "Just excited with my start, and let's see what the next few days holds. "They were like a hole or hole-and-a-half behind the group in front of them. "Any little thing that doesn't quite go right, you're sort of putting yourself behind the eight-ball. Just basically did everything that you need to do at a US Open.
Rory McIlroy bogeyed his final hole to drop into a three-way share of the clubhouse lead at the US Open.
"Once I played our front nine in two under, the goal was to try to play this round without a bogey. "But it’s fine. "I didn’t do that all day.

Rory McIlroy shot an opening-round 3-under 67 at the U.S. Open on Thursday, saying he is not motivated by the threat of the LIV Golf Invitational Series but ...
"Again, some of these reactions that maybe you saw out there today, whether it be hitting the sand on 5 or the club throw on 9, you just have to be so precise and so exact at this golf tournament, maybe compared to some others," McIlroy said. It was the 21st victory of his career, which moved him past Norman in career wins. He pushed his approach shot to the right of the green and threw his club in frustration. But, yeah, you're going to encounter things this week that you don't usually come across the other weeks of the year, and you just have to try to accept them as best you can." After making birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 to move to 4-under, McIlroy lost his cool again on the par-4 ninth, his final hole. "I'm just being me. "I gave the sand a couple of whacks because I'd already messed it up, so it wasn't like it was much more work for [caddie] Harry [Diamond]," McIlroy said. The margins are just so fine in this tournament, and I think you can sort of see that out there with some of the reactions." "You're going to encounter things at a U.S. Open, whether they be lies or stuff like that, that you just don't really encounter any other week," McIlroy said. It was an eventful opening round for McIlroy at the golf course outside Boston. He started on the back nine and carded a bogey-free, 2-under 33. It's certainly a different mindset when you get off to a good start, and yeah, I've just got to keep it going." With an opening-round 3-under 67, McIlroy put himself in great position to do just that.
Rory McIlroy signed for a three-under-par 67 to share the clubhouse lead on the first day of the US Open at Brookline.
“They were like a hole or hole and a half behind the group in front of them. Luckily there was somebody in Canada who went to the airport and gave the airport staff a little kick, and they arrived on Sunday at 2pm. “The margins are just so fine in this tournament and I think you can see that out there with some of the reactions.” On day one at the Country Club there were flashes of McIlroy brilliance and flashes of McIlroy frustration. “You feel like you’re right in the tournament from the start of the week, which is nice,” said the four-time major winner. There is precious little that could switch the discussion around golf from matters of Saudi Arabia, a rebel tour and the resulting grisly civil war.
McIlroy carded a three-under-par 67 at Brookline to share the early clubhouse lead with England's Callum Tarren, Sweden's David Lingmerth and American Joel ...
“Just excited with my start, and let’s see what the next few days hold.” “So I was sort of cursing the USGA whenever I was going up to the ball, but it’s one of those things. “Once I played our front nine in two under, the goal was to try to play this round without a bogey. It’s something to learn from. “It’s hard not to get frustrated because I’m walking up there going like, just come back into the bunker. “But it’s fine.
Defending champion Jon Rahm, PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas and two-time major title-holder Collin Morikawa are all only three strokes back at 1 under, ...
T42. Joaquin Niemann, Sam Burns, Bryson DeChambeau, Corey Conners and eight others (+1): After an eagle on the par-5 eighth, it appeared that Niemann would threaten the first page of the leaderboard as he stood at 2 under for the day. It felt as if he was all over the place Thursday as he carded four birdies to offset four bogeys. In his five U.S. Open appearances, he has five top-10 finishes; however, he has yet to truly contend as his average deficit entering the final round has been 5.4 strokes. While Young was in a similar spot as Spieth from a statistical standpoint, Cantlay was not as his iron play was simply dreadful. Having been in the final pairing at the 2022 PGA Championship, it is possible the heartache from Southern Hills leads to jubilation in Brookline. He has been knocking on the door for what seems like an eternity and on paper the 2022 version of Fitzpatrick is different. He will need this area of the bag to rebound as he has had some trouble backing up one great round with another. Leading the field in strokes gained tee to green, there is still room for improvement as the 34-year-old ranked 60th in strokes gained putting in Round 1. The Canadian is in the midst of a sneaky strong season, which at one point included three consecutive top-10 finishes but has yet to taste contention in a major championship. He continued his fine play Thursday at The Country Club, but it was not without some head scratching moments. Defending champion Jon Rahm, PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas and two-time major title-holder Collin Morikawa are all only three strokes back at 1 under, and they will look to ascend up the leaderboard in Friday's second round. Dropping a shot late in his round, McIlroy would later be matched by by Joel Dahmen, MJ Daffue and a pair of European counterparts at 3 under.
Here are the things that caught our eye—and caught us off guard—during the first round of the 2022 U.S. Open.
I recognized the two kids that were running the opposite way with a smile on their face," Rahm said laughing. Still, this is a guy who has lost to a total of four players over his past four U.S. Opens. And yet he got beaten by more than half the field on Thursday. Despite the bizarre situation, Rahm responded by making birdie to shoot 69 and put himself in great shape to defend his title. Oosthuizen, who finished T-2, solo second and T-3 in the final three majors of 2021, withdrew at this year’s Masters before finishing T-60 at the PGA, and now he’ll need a miracle to make the cut after opening with 77. You could say that the 39-year-old South African isn't LIVing at the top of major leaderboards anymore. The winner of the 2015 Memorial, Lingmerth has fallen to No. 592 in the Official World Golf Ranking. But he certainly didn’t play like that during a bogey-free 67. And Rahm thinks he knows who the culprits are. Look, the guy’s a PGA Tour winner and he finished T-9 at the Players Championship earlier this year. And that came 11 years ago at Congressional. But there he was on Thursday going out in a scorching four-under-par 31 and finishing at that number to take a one-stroke lead after 18 holes. Remember when this guy was seemingly in the hunt at every major last year? The six-time major champ struggled from start to finish shooting an eight-over-par 78 that included a four-putt from 16 feet on No. 6. BROOKLINE, Mass. — Day 1 at the U.S. Open is in the books, and there were plenty of things that left us scratching our heads.
US Open defending champion Jon Rahm said he was very happy with his opening-round 69 at The Country Club in Brookline, with a birdie finish placing him two ...
He added: "I got off to a great start, but on the last hole I just got a little greedy. "Through nine holes I thought I was going to go a lot deeper than three under," Morikawa said. Asked how happy he was with the start to his US Open defence, Rahm told Sky Sports: "Very. Especially seeing that birdie on 18.
Adam Hadwin produced a brilliant birdie run to move into a one-shot lead at the 122nd US Open, where Rory McIlroy is part of the chasing pack.
"I can certainly get ahead of them (shots) like a lot of guys do, especially at a big event like this. Get the best prices and book a round at one of 1,700 courses across the UK & Ireland I had a nice little run there at the end of my front nine and knew there were a lot of good strong holes coming in so just kind of kept plugging away.
Adam Hadwin leads the 122nd U.S. Open after a first-round 4-under-par 66 on Thursday at The Country Club.
Lingmerth was in the same qualifier and had to play 36 holes and then some because of a 5-for-1 playoff for the final spot. That went to Hayden Buckley — he was among those at 68 on Thursday — and Lingmerth was first alternate. He couldn’t save par on that one and had to accept a 67 — not a bad start, and no apologies for his few outbursts of emotion. But now it’s time for golf, and there a vibe of relief that focus could turn to a U.S. Open that first came to Brookline more than a century ago. For McIlroy, it was his second straight major — and third time in his last four U.S. Opens — he opened with a score under par. No other major is more open — roughly half the 156-man field has to qualify — and it showed. Dahmen debated whether to go a 36-hole qualifier 10 days ago in Ohio. The U.S. Open is hard and he had been beat up from travel and pedestrian results. Even with a good start, and coming off a victory last week in the RBC Canadian Open, it doesn’t figure to be easy for McIlroy or anyone else. He hit that into another bunker, and then twice slammed the club into the sand out of frustration. His previous low score in a major was 68 on three occasions, most recently the first round of the 2020 PGA Championship at Harding Park. “It’s hard not to get frustrated because I’m walking up there going, ‘Just come back into the bunker.’ The thickest rough on the course is around the edges of the bunker. BROOKLINE, Mass. — Adam Hadwin wasn’t officially in the U.S. Open until eight days ago.
A potentially rowdy Friday might be a little more subdued in the Boston area given what happened in Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night.
The morning wave features some rather large names to need to make a move in order to have a serious shot on the weekend. And then there is Rory McIlroy, also among the three-under crew thanks to his second straight strong start in a major championship. Having said that, the top of the leader board is a bit lacking in star power, though we know it's way too early to start talking like that.

Adam Hadwin leads after his opening round of 66 … but the likes of Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Adam Scott, Will Zalatoris, Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland and defending champ Jon Rahm are in hot pursuit. Four of the other five first-round leaders are also qualifiers, the exception being Rory McIlroy. Very strange. Sam Burns is a three-time winner on the PGA Tour this season, and in terms of recent form alone, might be the next cab on the rank to break his major duck. A drive down the middle of 10. He’s +1. And from long to big: MJ Daffue finds greenside sand at the drivable par-four 5th, splashes out to four feet, and makes it consecutive birdies. But he putts anyway and sends a right-to-left monster into the cup! ... so perhaps Adam Hadwin’s street-fighting par on 10 was the harbinger of a scrappy day. His third bird of the day, and he suddenly becomes a serious part of the conversation at -2. That leaves a tricky downhill pitch, which he sends way past the hole, his ball perhaps one revolution away from toppling off the false front and many yards down the fairway. We’ve all been there all right, and Scheffler’s amateur aberration costs him a shot. Two bogeys in the first three holes for the 34-year-old Canadian, and it could so easily have been three from three. Viktor Hovland trundles a long birdie putt 15 feet past on 15, but rolls in the one coming back.

So Hagestad, even though he’s very much embedded on the cocktail circuit, and a place like The Country Club barely meets his standard as far as exclusivity, and he’s not exactly a man of the people, I think the USGA would be much more comfortable if he were to win because he in fact is still an amateur, unlike the U.S. Amateur champion. I mean, it’s from a different era, it’s from a different century. So he’s turned pro, he’s gone over to the Saudis, but he’s playing as the U.S. Amateur champ. I mean, the term Massholes exists for a reason, so bring it. Rory always says and does the right things, he exudes class, so when he has a few slip-ups that show his passion, we almost enjoy that. He has better credentials than some of the guys who are already in the Hall, but peaking in your late 20s and then just disappearing … it’s a tough look. I love a wild, wooly links course like you get at the Open Championship, but The Country Club is so pleasing to the eye. I love the quirkiness, the weirdness, the blindness. He was the phenom, he was lost in the wilderness, now he’s the moral compass of golf. Yeah, I think there’s going to be this slow drip leading to the event in Oregon two weeks from now. The twisty fairways and the way the dark green rough blends into the golden heather, and the movement of the greens and the raggedy bunkers … this is golf heaven. I love Twitter. I love the Internet. You people complete me.

On Friday those windows are 6:45-9:30 a.m., and again after 7 p.m. He's started his round double bogey, bogey to drop to 1-over, leaving valuable strokes all over the greens. Woo buddy, that would have been one hell of a clubhouse bar tab. That's 217 yardage on the tee sheet, maybe closer to 230 in the wind, and Burns hit it to within six inches. Mickelson enjoyed a cordial welcome at Brookline. Matt Fitzpatrick returned to the site of his 2013 U.S. Amateur victory and posted a solid 2-under, sitting two strokes back. Daffue is originally from South Africa. When he was a youth, his career appeared predestined. It's amazing, and still relevant as the current U.S. Open leader — by three strokes! It also hosted the 2013 U.S. Amateur which saw Matt Fitzpatrick win that event. Curtis Strange won the last U.S. Open at The Country Club, which was held in 1988. U.S. Open leader MJ Daffue has gone out in a 32, taking a three-stroke lead over the field. Like Southern Hills, designer Gil Hanse has been working with The Country Club to prepare for this U.S. Open.

I don’t think they expected anybody to hit it there or be around there, so I was able to drop it in an area that was a little downgrain, and I wasn’t in jeopardy of carrying the bunker. I was past all the trees. Off the tee I was comfortable. However, when he arrived at the spot where he was sure his ball had landed - it was nowhere to be seen. After being given a free drop, he landed his approach 21 feet from the flag before nailing his putt to finish one under par. And the world No 2 was able to see the funny side of what went on.
