Dr Tony Holohan is stepping down from the position after 14 years on July 1. Prior to this, he served as deputy chief medical officer for seven years.
“Prof Smyth brings this considerable experience, excellent leadership ability and extensive public health skillset to the role and I very much look forward to working with her," he said. Prof Smyth says she is "excited" to begin her new role to "build on the considerable work done, both before and during Covid-19, to promote and protect public health". Prof Smyth contributed significantly to the country's Covid-19 response having been a member of the National Public Health Emergency Team (Nphet) and the Rapid Testing Expert Advisory Group. She was also a founding member of the Irish Epidemiology Modelling Advisory Group (IEMAG).
She will replace Dr Tony Holohan, who will resign from the position on July 1st.

On her appointment, Prof Smyth says: "I am excited to have the opportunity to work together with colleagues in the Department of Health, and across our health and social care service to build on the considerable work done, both before and during COVID-19, to promote and protect public health and the health and wellbeing of the population of Ireland. She has specialised in public health for the last 16 years and currently works as a professor at NUI Galway and is a consultant in public health in HSE West. Professor Smyth contributed significantly to Ireland’s COVID-19 response having been a member of the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET), the Rapid Testing Expert Advisory Group; Chief Investigator on the multi-site study UniCoV study as well as her important duties as the Director of Public Health in HSE West. NUI Galway's Professor Breda Smyth has been announced as the interim Chief Medical Officer for the Department of Health.
The role of the Chief Medical Officer for the Department of Health was not one of great public awareness prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. She was also the Chief Investigator for the UniCov study lead by NUI Galway, which aimed to facilitate a return to campus through rapid testing and intervention. Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly said that he was conscious the need to have someone in the Chief Medical Officer’s seat to continuing monitoring the situation with COVID-19, while awaiting a permanent replacement.
