England: This campaign has not gone according to plan so far with a surprise defeat to Hungary in Budapest followed by a draw in Germany and a goalless remake of last summer's UEFA Euro 2020 final vs. Like France's position after Monday's home loss to Croatia, these games appear to be a few too many for the Three Lions at the end of a demanding season. England vs Hungary LIVE: Nations League team news, line-ups and ... (The Independent)

Follow all the action from Molineux as the Three Lions play their final game of the summer.

In just 15 minutes, Scotland take on Armenia in one of the day’s first fixtures. The whole idea was rather undermined when, a few months after the inaugural edition had finished, Uefa granted a reprieve to those nations who finished bottom of their groups so that they could revamp and expand this new, oddly successful tournament. Anything less than a win for England and progressing to the Nations League finals this time next year will look extremely difficult. The Nations League introduced the concept of relegation to international football four years ago and, four years on, it is still hard to take it as seriously as its club equivalent. England face Hungary on Tuesday night in the Uefa Nations League, looking to lift themselves off the bottom of the group after a disappointing end-of-season run of results so far. Given the experimental selections, exhausted players and empty stadiums bar excitable schoolchildren, England’s end-of-season Nations League games have felt a little like the international friendlies that they were supposed to replace. A defeat tonight would leave Steve Clarke’s side bottom of the group at the midway stage, having played one game fewer than their rivals. As you can probably guess by now, this certainly isn’t the England players, or any other Nations League squad complaining about four fixtures in this international break. That was entirely understandable at the end of a long, hard and hectic campaign. Follow all the build-up and live match action as England face Hungary below: His third goal at senior level for the national team. Scotland living on the edge.

England vs Hungary live: score and latest updates from Nations ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

It looked more of a back three to me when the team was released, but TV have it as a 4-2-3-1 with Gallagher in the attacking midfield position.

With Kalvin Phillips going off injured in Germany, there might be a spot for Connor Gallagher to see his first action of the summer. "Also, you have to earn your England caps. Mason Mount has found it difficult to influence games from the No 10 position, while Bukayo Saka looks leggy after playing an immense number of minutes for Arsenal. Southgate named a more experimental team against Italy on Saturday, with Aaron Ramsdale, Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham handed starts. Walker, Stones and Guehi in the back three. The question is who plays out of position at left-back?

Gareth Southgate's England woes went from bad to worse with a humiliating 4-0 defeat at home to Hungary – their worst of the modern era. Despite his side ...

He was rooted as Hungary broke and bypassed him for 4-0. Harry Maguire: An 85th minute sub for Saka, Maguire was brought on to make sure the result did not get any worse. Kalvin Phillips: Phillips struggled to transition the ball at pace – a real contributor to the failure to create. He switched to the right after half-time and played more as a wing-back, again doing well, but conceding four means he can merit no more than a five. Again they broke against a sloppy home defence that failed to pick up their men, and again they took advantage as Zsolt Nagy drilled home. Booed off at half-time, England subbed Raheem Sterling on for Jarrod Bowen and switched to a wing-back system in the hope of stretching their opponents more.

But that's life as a football manager, you're never going to have six years like we've had and not have bad nights. England remain winless and bottom of their Nations League group with two points from four games, including a 1-0 defeat to Hungary in the reverse fixture earlier this month. "The irony is that the pressure we've had and the reputational comments have come in the two Nations League campaigns and in neither campaign have we been anywhere near able to pick our strongest teams for the games. England's misery was compounded in the final 10 minutes as Zsolt Nagy and Daniel Gazdag scored further goals and John Stones was shown a second yellow card to make it one of the worst nights of Gareth Southgate's reign.

England 0-4 Hungary: Biggest home defeat since 1928 as Gareth ... (Sky Sports)

England suffer their biggest home defeat in 94 years as they capitulate to a 4-0 beating at the hands of Hungary in the Nations League game at Molineux.

Keeping the ball has been a concern for England at their worst but after having 59 per cent of the ball against Italy, Southgate's side had 71 per cent of it in the first half without finding the net. But if they got a serious injury and missed the winter I would be kicking myself. Harry Kane failed to clear a free-kick clipped in from the left and Sallai was left free to ram the ball past Aaron Ramsdale from close range. When the game started to go against them tonight, I did not put the leaders around them. Southgate will be hoping it is not that kind of year. But it was Hungary who made the breakthrough with their first opening. It was that kind of night. In practice, it was not functioning. The ignominy was underlined when John Stones was red carded late on - but by that stage defeat was already inevitable. Fine combination play led by Reece James, playing at left-back, resulted in Jarrod Bowen having a headed chance that was blocked by Nagy. These four fixtures have yielded no wins and just the one goal - a penalty. Zsolt Nagy and Daniel Gazdag confirmed it to spark angry boos from the crowd.

England 0-4 Hungary: Nations League – as it happened (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: England suffered their worst home defeat in 94 years as Hungary – shades of 1953 and all that – stunned the nation with a dominant ...

A little too much weight on the pass, and it’s a goal kick. The ball takes a little nick off Bellingham, but the referee thinks it came off a Hungarian, and it’s a corner. As the ball is redirected wide left of the goal, the whistle goes, Stones adjudged to have done a little too much shoving. James shovels a disguised pass down the right for Kane, who traps, turns and shoots. He slips a pass down the left for Szoboszlai, who is forced to turn tail. Had Sallai been able to kill the ball dropping over his shoulder, he’d have been in for his second goal of the evening. A cross into the England box from the right. A Hungary throw down the right. 74 min: The 700-strong Hungary section is making one hell of a racket. “It’s not a foul,” insists the stunned Stones, and that indeed is a harsh decision. I’ve got to go with that and it’s my job to protect the players. Anyway, David Hytner was at Molineux to witness a thumping for the ages, and his report has landed.

Dismal England hammered by Hungary in Nations League as crowd ... (The Independent)

England 0-4 Hungary: John Stones red carded as fans boo players off pitch following historic defeat.

“Tried” being the operative word because they were struggling to match Hungary’s purpose, and were eventually further behind. Some may now mock Hungary celebrating like they won the World Cup, except you only have to consider what this might mean for England’s. This was what stood out about Hungary. They all had basic jobs and knew exactly what to do. Gareth Southgate has real problems to solve, as his team lost momentum and - perhaps most relevantly - he lost the support of a significant section of a home crowd. This dismally long international break, that no one wanted, and has now brought the most unwanted of records. The free-kick should not have been that hard to deal with, but the line was split into three different sections, which saw John Stones head the ball towards his own goal.
