Likewise, plenty of viewers still heaped praise on the 'brilliant' first episode, with many specifically pointing to Sherwood's huge, star-studded cast as a particular highlight. As he explained, the reasons were 'mainly character, & accent'. James went on to say that he thought Gary wouldn't have been a local fan, but also outlined that he worried that non-footy fans wouldn't have recognised the name with the local accent so made the deliberate change, but added "Know it frustrates fans. Lots of fans took issue with Alun's character calling the football club Nottingham Forest "Notts Forest". As many pointed out, "Notts" is usually used to refer to the National League team Nottingham County, rather than Nottingham Forest, who have been promoted to the Premier League for the upcoming season.

Sherwood recap: episode one – welcome to Ashfield … mind the ... (The Guardian)

In the beguiling series opener, a tragic murder opens old wounds – and something more sinister – in this ex-mining town simmering with age-old rage.

It’s a chilling fictionalisation of the 2004 murder of Keith “Froggy” Frogson, a 62-year-old ex-striking miner who was shot with a crossbow while walking home from the pub, by a killer who went to ground in Sherwood Forest. But St Clair’s inquiry was about to hit a (red) wall. He’d clearly clashed with Sinclair, also a rookie at the time, so was cagey when called decades later. This was a state-of-the-nation piece disguised as a crime drama. This deeply personal project by playwright James Graham was inspired by this and another murder in the Nottinghamshire village where he grew up. St Clair set up a telegenic incident room in a local church, complete with glowing crucifix on the wall, just to emphasise that he’s a righteous truth-seeker. Down the Miners’ Welfare Club for a Sunday night pint, glares were exchanged between Gary, Fred and another strike-breaker, Dean Simmonds (Sean Gilder). When Gary muttered “scab”, Deano snapped and threw a pool ball at him. A potent reminder of the way lifelong neighbours were divided by the strike – and of how those faultlines persist decades later. The vibe was warmer at the house of Julie Jackson (Lesley Manville), one of Neel’s staff. As Gary tottered home from the “clubby”, he seemed to be stalked by a hooded figure. Husband Gary (Alun Armstrong) was a proud National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) member and one of the few locals to keep solidarity on the picket line back in 1984. In the closeknit community of Ashfield, Tory council candidate Sarah Vincent (Joanne Froggatt) was marrying building society manager Neel (Bally Gill).

Sherwood review: Probably not the show you expected (Radio Times)

The BBC series, from Quiz's James Graham, isn't your typical crime drama. Sherwood review. By. Abby Robinson.

There's a man terrorising locals with a bow and arrow (just in case you forgot we were in Nottingham) – as depicted in the trailer – but there's a deliberate lack of urgency. The performances are solid, with Manville (unsurprisingly) the standout, and the dialogue authentic. Those who crossed the picket lines were labelled "scabs", a word Gary Jackson (Alun Armstrong), an ex-miner and National Union of Mineworkers member, spits at those he considers traitors.

Glenister is recognisable for his role as George Kirkbright in Cold Feet and Jasper Chiswell in the Robert Galbraith adaptation Strike. Joanne Froggatt plays Sarah Vincent, a tory politician campaigning for a council seat in a hard labour ward. David Morrissey plays DCS Ian St Clair, the local police officer tasked with solving two shocking murders. Froggatt is best known for her role as Anna Bates in the period series Downton Abbey and its two movie spinoffs - she also took on the title role in the drama series Angela Black. He is known for playing Walter Blackett in The Singapore Grip and The Governor in The Walking Dead. The deaths and the investigation bring the trauma of the miners’ strike of the 1980s back to the foreground, and it is clear that the effects of the strike are still keenly felt in the community.

When we went to this picket line, it was serious. "The cast that they were assembling was amazing, really – really amazing," she explains. Somebody who is just very open and honest." Rodgers denied murder but confessed to manslaughter by diminished responsibility, never offering any further information as to why he killed Chanel. This plea was denied by the courts. Speculation around why exactly Boyer targeted Frogson with such a frenzied attack was put down initially to both their attachment to the miners' strike of 1984-85, which had split the area in two. Frogson was attached to the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and even after retiring would wear insignia promoting their 'coal not dole' slogan. Sherwood review – the cleverest, most compelling show I've seen in ... (The Guardian)

James Graham's crime drama about a crossbow killing rocking an ex-mining town is the TV equivalent of bowling a strike. Everything you could hope for is ...

When Gary is found dead in the street, killed by a crossbow bolt, the most immediate person of interest to the investigating officer – local boy made good (“Now I live on the outskirts of the village”) Ian St Clair (David Morrissey) – is “scab” Dean (Sean Gilder), with whom Gary had often and recently argued. Without sacrificing story or suspense, and never paying less than meticulous attention to teasing out the knotty mass of relationships and the ramifications playing out around the village, Sherwood builds slowly – layer by subtle, evocative layer – into a magisterial state-of-the-nation piece. It’s even funny – because it’s about people and because it has made those people real and because real people are, forever, even in their darkest moments, funny. Alun Armstrong plays Gary Jackson, a National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) stalwart in a village dominated by the Union of Democratic Mineworkers (UDM), who, let’s say, took a softer stance on striking and the privatisation of the coal industry. It is the drama equivalent of bowling a strike: a writer knowing the setting and themes in his bones, a dream cast drawn to the richly allusive resulting script, each of those actors doing their best work in years (which, given the standards that Manville, Morrissey, Armstrong et al maintain is quite something to watch) and their chemistry, with beautiful direction from Lewis Arnold and Ben A Williams, creating something even greater than the sum of its superb parts. To anyone over the age of 45 or so, it feels like yesterday.

Sherwood, BBC One, review: Mare of Easttown meets Emmerdale ... (iNews)

David Morrissey, Robert Glenister, Lesley Manville and Adeel Akhtar lead an all-star cast in James Graham's mining strikes drama.

Elsewhere in the mix were the Sparrow family, who run the local archery site, while paterfamilias Mickey (Philip Jackson) packaged up cocaine at the kitchen table. Given the choice by his boss (Poldark’s Pip Torrens, yet another well-known face in a fleeting role) between early retirement and returning to help out in Nottingham, he reluctantly headed North. It seemed that during the strike, the murder victim, Gary Jackson, had criminal charges for arson dropped when a certain PC Kevin Salisbury provided him with an alibi.
