Andy Murray struggles with injury in Stuttgart final defeat to Berrettini (The Guardian)

The Italian Matteo Berrettini beat Andy Murray 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the final of the Stuttgart Open with the Scot struggling with injury in the third set.

But while a month off the tour evidently helped him to unlock a higher level, the heavy load on Murray’s body in his first week back evidently took its toll. He was unable to serve at full pace, and then in the middle of his service game at 2-4 he underwent another medical timeout. Against one of the biggest servers in the world, a hobbled Murray fought but he was unable to make any further progress. Throughout the second set, Murray maintained his serve but at 4-4, he faced three break points with the match hanging by a thread. But on Sunday afternoon, in his first grass court final since 2016, Murray’s tournament ended with some concern as he struggled with an abdominal injury and he was beaten in the final by Matteo Berrettini 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. He is playing at the highest level of professional tennis with a metal right hip, after all, and so it is advisable for him to preserve his body when he can.

I hope to see you all again in the future." Despite tasting defeat in the final, Murray has played brilliantly and his performances will stand him in good stead provided he is fit enough to head to Wimbledon later this month. Worryingly, it was Murray's left hip that appeared to be the issue. However, against Berrettini, who lost to Novak Djokovic in last year's Wimbledon final, Murray fell short at the final hurdle. Murray twice fought back but could not prevent Berrettini from winning the first set 6-4. Murray has enjoyed an impressive run in Stuttgart, earning an impressive victory over number one seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in quarter-finals.
