Biden to end Covid testing requirement for travel into US (The Guardian)

Requirement to test negative, which has been in place since January 2021, criticized by travel industry and some lawmakers.

The travel industry, as well as some scientists and lawmakers, including Democrats, had been critical of the requirement, saying it was no longer needed. It will examine the decision again after three months. In December, the CDC tightened requirements for international air travelers to get a negative test within one day rather than three days of coming to the United States.

The U.S. will no longer require travelers to show proof of a negative Covid test before boarding flights to the country.

For its part, the Travel Technology Association's vice president of government relations, Mike Liptak, said in a statement that travel and tourism are key to the economic recovery from the pandemic. Separately, in April, a Trump-appointed federal judge struck down another contentious rule that aimed to curb the spread of Covid-19: the Biden administration's federal mandate that travelers wear masks on planes and other forms of public transportation. Airlines and others in the travel industry had repeatedly pushed the administration to drop the requirement, arguing it was hurting demand for international trips. "International inbound travel is vitally important to businesses and workers across the country who have struggled to regain losses from this valuable sector." Travelers entering the U.S. at land border crossings were exempt. - The travel industry had repeatedly urged the administration to drop the testing requirement.

Later, in March, Ireland did away with all of its Covid-19 requirements for incoming travelers. The United States lifted its so-called "travel ban" on EU and UK tourists in November 2021 which had been introduced by former President Donald Trump in March 2020 and continued in January 2021 when President Biden took office. It is unclear if the vaccination requirement is going to be lifted.

The CDC will not require pre-departure COVID testing for U.S.-bound air travelers, starting June 12, according to a senior administration official.

"The airline industry appreciates the Administration's decision to lift the pre-departure testing requirement in accordance with the current epidemiological environment," Calio said. "Do they work from a public health perspective? "Do (travel restrictions) show the public that something's being done? The decision will be reassessed in 90 days and the health agency plans to evaluate it on an ongoing basis. "Lifting this policy will help encourage and restore air travel to the United States, benefiting communities across the country that rely heavily on travel and tourism to support their local economies. The requirement will be lifted at 12:01 a.m. ET, according to a senior administration official.

Three former officials with the Department of Justice will be witnesses at the Jan. 6 hearing next Wednesday, according to a new letter sent to the Jan. 6 committee. US Lifts COVID-19 Test Requirement for International Travel (U.S. News & World Report)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration is lifting its requirement that international air travelers to the U.S. take a COVID-19 test within a day before ...

It was coupled with a requirement that foreign, non-immigrant adults traveling to the United States need to be fully vaccinated, with only limited exceptions. In April, a federal judge in Florida struck down a requirement that passengers wear masks on planes and public transportation, saying that the CDC had exceeded its authority. Travelers found creative ways to avoid the rule. The person said the CDC will reevaluate the issue every 90 days and could reinstate the requirement if a troubling new variant of COVID-19 emerges. In May, U.S. international air travel remained 24% below 2019 levels, with declines among both U.S. and foreign citizens, according to trade group Airlines for America. In November, as the highly transmissible omicron variant swept the world, the Biden administration toughened the requirement and required all travelers — regardless of vaccination status — to test negative within a day of travel to the U.S. Despite ending the testing requirement, the CDC will continue to recommend COVID-19 testing prior to air travel of any kind as a safety precaution, according to the senior administration official. The requirement for a negative COVID-19 test before flying to the U.S. dates to January 2021 and is the most visible remaining U.S. travel restriction of the pandemic era. Roger Dow, president of the U.S. Travel Association, called lifting the testing rule “another huge step forward for the recovery of inbound air travel and the return of international travel to the United States.” In February, travel groups argued that the testing requirement was obsolete because of the high number of omicron cases already in every state, higher vaccinations rates and new treatments for the virus. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration is lifting its requirement that international travelers test negative for COVID-19 within a day before boarding a flight to the United States, ending one of the last remaining government mandates designed to contain the spread of the coronavirus. The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to preview the formal announcement, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention determined that the testing requirement is no longer necessary.

Flying to the US? Soon you won't need a COVID test (Aljazeera.com)

The US had required travelers to show proof of vaccination or negative COVID test if they were flying into the country.

The lifting of the requirement comes six weeks after a federal judge ended the CDC’s mask requirement for mass transit, including trains, planes, buses and transit hubs, saying the agency exceeded its authority. It came in conjunction with a requirement that foreign, non-immigrant adults traveling to the United States need to be fully vaccinated, with only limited exceptions. CDC will do a reassessment of this decision in 90 days, a senior Biden administration official told the Reuters new agency.
