Max will always be a werewolf, will almost-always get cured, and will always die if he heads across the water. Those are the key decisions – much easier to keep everyone alive than you might have thought, isn’t it? On the upside, you can kill Jacob with a gun, which you might really want to by this point. Use loud sounds to distract the werewolf. Still, for the main squad of nine, there are a number of ways to get them to the end alive, well, and ready to make their case to the police that no, officer, honest, there were monsters. Even though the game presents them alongside the teens in the closing crawl of who lived and died, some are inevitable for the plot to move forward. Keeping Emma up is mostly in QTEs, but also grabbing the right items. Be nice to him as much as possible, if you really want. Just don’t leave the island. The one where all the teens don’t die. Keeping everyone alive in The Quarry is challenging, though there are a few different routes to take. Naturally, what follows will include giga-spoilers for The Quarry, from start to finish.

We also don’t know much about Constance, played by Lin Shaye, as the official website only hints that “they can’t wait to meet you…”. Lin has been acting since the 1970s, including in horror films as her best-known role is Elise Rainier in the Insidious series. Miles is no stranger to horror films, appearing in 2018’s Halloween alongside Jamie Lee Curtis. He’s also Jackson Van De Kamp in The X-Files reboot. Despite often doodling in her sketchbook, she is desperate for romance before the end of summer. Kaitlyn is perhaps one of the more confident members of the counsellor team, although she’s not afraid to stir up trouble now and then. Although he has trouble letting people see his more vulnerable side, Nick is a bit of a teen heartthrob. Emma is played by Halston Sage, who some may know as Lacey from Paper Towns, Taylor in Goosebumps, and Dazzler in X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Justice Smith plays Ryan, another one of the counsellors. Skyler Gisondo is Laura’s boyfriend Max, who is a bit of a slacker with little ambition. However, her most prominent role to date is as Elsa in Welcome to Marwen alongside Steve Carell and Gwendoline Christie. In TV comedies such as My Name is Earl and Friends, he also features in one-off roles. With 16 characters in The Quarry, that means each player has to take on multiple roles at a time. As fate would have it, I've been able to spend the last week or so with a shiny new review copy of 2K's latest release, and after hours scurrying around in the ...
I had an absolute bloody blast with The Quarry, and I say this knowing that it won’t be for everyone. It’s amazing the emotional nuance that Supermassive has been able to capture via the studio, especially in the characters’ eyes, and it makes for some very convincing scenes. It’s not an understatement to say that The Quarry is an experience you watch more than you play, and I can understand how that may turn certain gamers off. There’s lots of conversation, lots of dialogue choices to make, and enough QTEs to make you froth at the mouth for Shenmue IV. As you can tell, the setup is gloriously ‘80s in flavor, and The Quarry takes that retro foundation and sprints with it. Back in May, I was privy to a preview for The Quarry, Supermassive Games’ new teen horror interactive slasher movie, and I walked (ran?) away wanting more.

We really wanted to push down that route of: actually, it wasn't about them being bad, but we wanted to push the player down the route of suspicion and mistrust. The Hills Have Eyes is another version of this, but the Deliverance comparison to The Quarry is the closest, because in this the folk in question aren't freaks, they're just people with their own ruleset. The Evil Dead was very much a part of our thinking, and you'll see that there's a bunch of POV shots in the game that we pretty much stole to get that same sort of feel [laughs]." "There's two films that I'm trying to choose between [for the last one]. There's Deliverance and then there's Southern Comfort, which is a cracking film, but I think it has to be Deliverance. The feeling films like these capture so well is something like: there's a bunch of people up here, and they've got their own rule-set. And there's this contemporary feel with the modern teenagers, the dialogue, the relationships, and all that sort of stuff. And there's also very much a 50s feel to the Hackett's Quarry setting side to the game. So you're really still talking about this story of discovery; it's still a Who Done It of sorts, more than the standard horror which it is now." We've got a very kickass music track going all the way through The Quarry, and that was very much taken from the idea of An American Werewolf. It just has some fantastic music tracks – Bad Moon Rising, and all of that good stuff. It was considered a huge mistake, but it was really impactful on the audience." "To be really honest, a lot of what we do goes right back to Psycho. When Alfred Hitchcock gets Janet Lee killed right near the beginning of the film – no one believed you could do that with a star! "So we really pushed The Quarry down those avenues – the summer camp, let's make it on a lake. And it wasn't that we stole specific ideas, it was just that you can't go back to before Scream. You can't make horror films from before Scream because all of that stuff is now out in the open.
