When It Comes To Prize Money, LIV Golf's Debut In London Blows ... (Forbes)

All seven regular-season tournaments in the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series will beat the PGA Tour's all-time-high purse, with fewer players ...

The Telegraph reported that Patrick Reed, too, would move to LIV. Rickie Fowler, meanwhile, acknowledged in a recent interview with the New York Post that he was considering the jump. Mickelson hasn’t played competitively since generating controversy with the February publication of his comments that he was willing to ignore alleged human rights violations by Saudi Arabia in order to join the then-prospective circuit. LIV’s season, at eight events, is dwarfed by the PGA Tour’s 49-event schedule (which includes the four majors). While the upstart circuit plans to build out its slate to ten events next year and 14 in 2024 and 2025, the new tour will offer many fewer chances to compete for prize money for the immediate future, and the PGA said Thursday that golfers who switched to LIV would be suspended from its events. LIV’s London event has a field of 48 players while most of the PGA Tour’s top-paying events have at least 70 golfers who earn paychecks. Tournaments won’t cut down the field after two rounds the way the PGA Tour does, ensuring every golfer who competes at a LIV event gets a chunk of the purse. LIV’s season-ending Team Championship will also carry a prize fund of $50 million to be divided among 12 squads, including $16 million for the first-place team.

LIV Golf bags DAZN global broadcast deal - SportsPro (SportsPro Media)

Eleven and Sky Deutschland reportedly sign deals for rebel golf circuit's first event, taking place from 9th to 11th June.

Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed were not included in the PGA Tour’s list of suspended players, but reports suggest they have committed to playing June’s second LIV Golf event as the series heads to Portland. The Indian subcontinent and Australasia are yet to have a rights agreement in place. Sky Deutschland and SuperSport’s reported involvement is particularly notable given they already have rights to the more established PGA Tour and DP World Tour, both of which have spoken out against LIV Golf. Mola TV also has rights to the PGA Tour in Indonesia and Singapore. DirecTV has reportedly inked a deal for rights across Latin America. In China, the rights have been distributed to digital platform Sina Sports. In Korea, MBC, SBS and SPOTV have signed up to broadcast the tour. In the UK, the Daily Mail reports that LIV Golf had pitched the events to pay-TV networks Sky Sports and BT Sport but was unsuccessful in the approach. DAZN has snapped up rights in the majority of its active markets, including German-speaking countries, Italy, Spain, Japan, the US and Canada. SportsPro understands DAZN was offered free, non-exclusive global rights by LIV Golf to broadcast the series.

PGA Tour suspends players in Saudi-backed event as golf's discord ... (The Washington Post)

As LIV Golf launches its inaugural tournament, the PGA Tour announced that stars such as Dustin Johnson no longer will be allowed in its events.

The fans are going to love it, all the players who are here are going to love it.” Meanwhile, the new league — whose LIV name refers to the Roman numeral of its 54-hole events and rhymes with “give” — struck a cheery tone during its first round. “ … This certainly is not the last word on this topic.” It has raised purses, enhanced end-of-season bonus money and introduce the Player Impact Program, which funnels money to stars based on a combination of performance and off-course promotion. The tour, though, cannot compete financially with the deep pockets of LIV Golf or its guaranteed money for appearances, which violates the PGA Tour’s entrenched pay-for-performance ethos. “You probably have more questions,” Monahan wrote in his Thursday memo to players. They’ll therefore expect the players to behave much as they would do in any other tournament.,” said University of Sussex politics professor Dan Hough, who specializes in integrity and corruption in sports. “But they can’t demand the same PGA TOUR membership benefits, considerations, opportunities and platform as you. LIV Golf can offer guaranteed money on par with athletes in other sports, even if many believe the money is tainted by alleged atrocities of a repressive Saudi government. The rebel tour has no designs on turning a short-term profit, aiming instead to gain an instant foothold in the sport. If the general public are confused about who is playing where and what tournament’s on this week and who is, you know, ‘Oh, he plays there, okay, and he doesn’t get into these events.’ It just becomes so confusing. PGA Tour suspends golfers playing in Saudi Arabia's LIV Golf ... (NBC News)

The Saudi-funded LIV Golf series launched on Thursday to sportswashing accusations and a PGA Tour ban on players involved in the breakaway league.

Experts see sports as a big part of this — both by helping to attract foreign investment and providing jobs for a young population with high unemployment. And two of the eight LIV events will take place on courses owned by former President Donald Trump. “These players have made their choice for their own financial-based reasons,” Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a memo to members. “I don’t condone human rights violations at all,” Mickelson said. As Sons puts it, “Those golfers, whether they like it or not, and whether they acknowledge it or not, they are implicitly ambassadors and they are communicating messages on behalf of the Saudi state.” The LIV series has a different format from the PGA: 12 teams, 48 players and 54 holes per event (LIV is 54 in Roman numerals). A sparkling sign at the “fan village” at the Centurion Club on Thursday declared “Welcome to the Future.”

LIV Golf Day 1 Live Updates: Follow Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson ... (Sports Illustrated)

The LIV Golf International Series has arrived, and we're following Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and all of the action on the opening day.

Everyone will tee off at the same time in a shotgun start: Usually it entails an army of golf carts all launched at once from the clubhouse. Phil Mickelson is grouped with DJ, and he also hit the fairway with his opening shot on No. 1. The shotgun start is moments away. The presentation includes a constantly updating leaderboard on the left side of the screen, with players and their team logos. Dustin Johnson's opening shot was shown live on the broadcast, and he split the fairway. The Public Investment Fund, an autonomous wealth fund administered by the government of Saudi Arabia, is the main shareholder of LIV Golf Investments. The golf course is tough and conditions are really tough," Johnson said afterward on the broadcast. If you’re just tuning in, you'll notice that most of the players won’t look any different sartorially than in other tournaments. So, in theory, one player could have a poor event but three good teammates and get a nice payday. Schwartzel is a former Masters champion and one of 17 current or former PGA Tour members competing in this event. We'll have live updates throughout the first day, so check back for more highlights, news and analysis from LIV Golf's first day.

What the PGA tour will be looking closely at is whether LIV has the potential to lure more top players away and into its ranks. Shortly after they teed off in the first LIV Golf event, every PGA Tour member was suspended. Graeme McDowell was dismayed. Ian Poulter vowed to appeal.

“I wanted to keep the moral high ground and kind of remain a member of the Tour because I really didn't feel like I needed to resign nor that I should have to resign. This is no different, I am committed to playing around the world like I have done for so many years so it is a shame if they view this as different. If that’s the way he wants to go, that’s the way he wants to go.’’ I love the PGA Tour. It's been great to me. “But like I say, I didn't want to resign. Excited to finally be here playing and see the reaction of the people and the players and everything. We have a compelling option which is not agreeable by the big tours in the world. Phil Mickelson, who Wednesday said as a lifetime member of the PGA Tour he should be allowed to keep that honor and play when he wants, said he would not comment on PGA Tour business. A guy like Sergio García has been doing that for the last five years of his life. It's going to allow me to see my family more, spend more time with my kids, 4 and 2, spend as much time as I can, and I make a good living doing it. “We figured at some point they might want to circle the wagons and get us all in agreement.’’ “We knew that loophole existed and certainly you can understand tournaments might want to get the best players possible.’’

No, this isn't good for golf (GolfDigest.com)

LIV Golf has turned professional golf into a reality show, and the worst is just beginning.

Still, it’s not the job of Augusta National, the USGA, the R&A and PGA of America to clean up this mess, and that the tour is beholden to them to succeed should be a wake-up call. One of the things that holds our attention are the players in the arena, and when you invest as much time and emotion as being a fan requires it’s understandable to develop certain feelings towards them. The money is too tempting and where that money comes from has not been a deterrent to a contingent of golfers. It insists on selling the importance of the playoffs, and the moment you have to explain why you matter is the moment you prove the opposite. In our neck of the woods, that is golf. And a product that now raises a question of morality. LIV Golf? In spite of its trappings—perhaps in spite of itself—LIV Golf has proved over the past nine days it is very real, and its evolution from a concept to something concrete has massive consequences. If tour officials don’t take this moment to take a serious analysis of the product it’s presenting, they are just as much a threat to themselves as LIV Golf is to them. How that is additive to the sport, how that is interesting to golf fans, remains unclear. Which brings us to the problem facing the PGA Tour, and make no mistake, it is bad. LIV Golf is the antithesis of this spirit. There is a fundamental fault with the competition that LIV Golf is creating, and for a second put aside the problematic strings to this venture and focus on that competition.

21 simple questions you might be asking about LIV Golf, with 21 one ... (GolfDigest.com)

Presenting the basic facts for those of you who haven't been paying attention.

This is for those who might be coming in late or who have avoided the entire mess until now, and if it works as a gateway drug to further research, great. This is the casual version—a series of 21 questions and answers for those who are just learning about LIV Golf, or who want the basics without committing quite as much time. All answers will be confined to a single sentence, with the aid of a semicolon or an em dash here or there. The product, somewhat, but even more important than that is how long the Saudis are willing to throw hundreds of millions of dollars at this without seeing a profit, and how tight the solidarity is between the PGA Tour and its best players—i.e., can they prevent further defections?—and most important of all is whether the majors take action to ban these golfers, since that would have an incredible chilling effect on anyone who’s thinking of jumping in the future. Yes, but again, even in a world without perfect entities, and even in a world where morality coincides with self-interest in cases like these, we are all hopefully grown adults who can understand scale and differentiate between levels of sin, and not the kind of people who resort to dull moral equivalencies to wave it all way. We live in a global society and are compelled to participate in society in ways that bring us into contact with the very things we decry, yes, but as far as sports go, playing in a league that is explicitly run by an objectionable foreign government in the face of a thriving domestic alternative that is not run by an objectionable government strikes many (read: me) as a significantly worse moral compromise than that time I took a Boeing jet to Tulsa and Uber'ed to a hotel, or the fact that you have to pay taxes to a government that has dealings with said government, or even, on a granular level, worse than a world-class driver participating in F1 because it's where the best drivers have to go. 17. Doesn't the PGA Tour also do things that we might object to, and doesn't it serve its interests to point out the moral shortcomings of the Saudis? The PGA Tour just suspended them all on Thursday morning without putting a timeline on it, the PGA of America has made it pretty clear that they can't play in PGA Championships or the Ryder Cup, the U.S. Open is still letting them play this week, and no word yet from Augusta or the R&A or the Official World Golf Ranking. Aren't the Saudis involved in the Premier League and F1, and Uber, and Boeing? Aren't they allies of the U.S. government? There are a bunch of teams with bad names, and F1-style team competition is part of the whole deal, plus they have smaller fields (48 in London this week) and shotgun starts. The answers are “no” and “sort of”; they've been given permission to say things like "I think we all agree, the Khashoggi situation, that was reprehensible" (direct quote from Graeme McDowell), and they can broadly condemn human-rights violations, but beyond that it's word salad-y vague stuff like this or some version of, "hey, I'm not a politician, I'm just a golfer, what do I know?!" Greg Norman teamed up with an entity called LIV Golf to start a rival to the PGA Tour that they swear isn't actually a rival, even though it is, and it's backed by money from Saudi Arabia that's being used to poach the PGA Tour's best players, with, as of now, eight events set to be staged across the world, starting this week in London.

Dustin Johnson looks on, with Beefeater guards in the background, during the first round of the first LIV Golf event. Aitor Alcalde/LIV Golf.

His routine par on the 492-yard opener involved a long drive into the fairway, an approach to maybe 18 feet and two putts. Time will tell, but until it does there is something different for this tournament in the feel department. All that activity didn’t end with the tee shots. There’s a red double-decker bus that is actually a “vintagebusbar.” There’s a red phone box that may or may not contain a working telephone. And putting guru Phil Kenyon was in position on the practice green. “Vindictive” LIV Golf called it in a prompt rebuttal. On the (too small) range things have looked pretty much as you’d expect on any other tour. And only four are inside the top 50. Which is not to say things may change on the front. For one thing, the overall quality of this field falls far short of your typical Grand Slam event. They all have a certain something, and not necessarily all the same something, that makes them distinct from the norm. "Sportswashing is one part of (the PR strategy)," Ahmed said. I do not answer to Saudi Arabia." It’s very important for people who can to speak out." "I don't know what the Saudi government does. But critics say the league is part of a broader political effort by Saudi Arabia to buy legitimacy and polish its global image. "Our knowledge as a global community of this apparent phenomenon is relatively immature," he said. A U.S. intelligence report determined the country's crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, signed off on the operation. " ... By associating themselves with sport, leaders are seeking to position their country in line with that magic.
