I try to worry about golf and I am excited about this week. I don't want to play golf for the rest of my life which I felt like I was probably going to have to do. I try to hit a golf ball into a small hole. I love using the game of golf as something to help grow around the world and be role models to kids, try to use this game as a force for good. If Saudi Arabia want to use the game of golf as a way for them to get to where they want to be, I think we're proud to help them on that journey. I'm sorry if this is a bit of a crass question to ask, but it is essentially about the money why you're here, isn't it?

“Is it healthy for the sport? “As golfers if we tried to cure geopolitical situations in every country in the world that we played in, we wouldn’t play a lot of golf. I hope it doesn’t affect that,” said McDowell, who holed the winning putt at Celtic Manor in 2010. We are just here to focus on the golf.” I asked how the sovereign wealth funded series will help those who have been killed, oppressed and suffered by Saudi actions.— Rob Harris (@RobHarris) https://t.co/lLxnCCQsqm pic.twitter.com/rtDaetqnG1 June 7, 2022 Just say it's about the piles and piles of money.

It is a really hard question to get into.” “We are not politicians, we are professional golfers. I love using the game of golf as something to help grow around the world. That is pretty much what we have done for the last 20 years; be role models to kids (and) try and use this game as a force of good really. We are professional golfers. "We are not politicians.
McDowell probably didn't realize that his words were an unwitting explanation of how sportswashing works.
For all of his press conference fluffing, McDowell knows his move is no more visionary than the lining of his own pockets. “Every lie is two lies,” the author Robert Brault once wrote, “The lie we tell others and the lie we tell ourselves to justify it.” One wonders what lies McDowell told himself while sitting on that London stage, because we know what lies he told us, and on whose behalf. But the honesty of streetwalkers was not in evidence at the LIV Golf launch. The result was as appealing as most of his recent scorecards. But from a fan perspective, what has always been less prevalent in golf than in other sports is a searing disappointment in those who actually play the game. Whatever the issue, there’s a constituency that insists consequential decisions made in public are somehow not subject to public scrutiny or comment.
