Apple didn't launch rumored realityOS or VR glasses at WWDC (Mashable)

At Mashable, we hoped for a tease of some sort up till the very end, but Apple CEO Tim Cook decided to skip the " one more thing" this year. More recently, we've started hearing about realityOS, the operating system powering a new generation of Apple products focused on virtual/augmented/mixed reality, including the upcoming headset. Instead, the upcoming VR glasses would be a niche product with a very high price, well outside of what most people would pay for such a gadget.

EU agrees deal on common phone charger in blow to Apple (Irish Examiner)

The plan would force all companies to make phones, tablets, e-readers, and digital cameras compatible with USB-C chargers by 2024.

Phones and tablet makers will have to comply by the autumn of 2024. Current Apple laptop models already use the USB-C charger. But the company is currently testing future iPhone models that replace the current Lightning charging port with the more prevalent USB-C connector.

The company warned that forcing it to adopt a universal charger would "stifle innovation" as well create "an unprecedented volume of electronic waste" and inconvenience millions of people. Old chargers generate an estimated 51,000 tonnes of electronic waste per year and the EU believes a "one size fits all" approach would make customers' lives easier and help the environment.

Planning extension for Apple Galway data centre quashed (RTE.ie)

But at that point the timeframe for Apple to submit a new application for an extension of the duration of the original planning permission had expired. The following September, Galway County Council gave permission for it to proceed subject to conditions, but that decision was subsequently appealed to An Bord Pleanála. They also argued that the council’s decision last year was made under legislation that didn’t allow for the applicant or the public to engage or make submissions on an application for an extension of duration of planning permission. The objectors had argued that the council had failed to assess the implications of extending the permission which it was obliged to under EU law. A Galway County Council decision last year to allow an extension to the planning permission granted to Apple to build a data centre on lands in Athenry Co Galway has been quashed by the High Court. That permission was due to expire in September of last year and so Apple, which at that time was still seeking a buyer for the site, applied to the council for a five-year extension.

"By autumn 2024, USB Type-C will become the common charging port for all mobile phones, tablets and cameras in the EU," the European Parliament said in a statement. Apple will have to bow to a new EU directive and change the charging port on its iPhone to fall in line with a new directive set out by the EU. The directive from the European Commission comes after more than a decade of trying to introduce such a measure, which was met with strong resistance from Apple. All Apple iPhones sold in Europe from 2024 will have to comply with an EU law that will result in a standard charging port for all mobile phones, cameras and tablets.

EU agrees single charger standard, in blow to Apple (Tech Xplore)

European officials on Tuesday agreed the text of a proposed EU law imposing a standard charger for smartphones, tablets and laptops sold in the bloc, ...

The European Commission had long defended a voluntary agreement it made with the device industry that was set in place in 2009 and saw a big reduction in cables, but Apple refused to abide by it. "The proposal is vastly disproportionate to any perceived problem," the company said in its response to the commission when the law was being drafted. And in order to prepare for the future, the law has provisions to set a standard on wireless charging. Apple, which already uses USB-C connectors on some of its iPads and laptop computers, has insisted any legislation to force a universal charger for all mobiles in the European Union is unwarranted. European officials on Tuesday agreed the text of a proposed EU law imposing a standard charger for smartphones, tablets and laptops sold in the bloc, in a blow to Apple. Lawmakers agreed on the common charger based on a proposal that was made by the EU executive—the European Commission—in September, but came more than a decade after the European Parliament first pushed for it.

That means it might not be available on the regular iPhone 14. Apple unveils its car at WWDC – sort of (RCR Wireless News)

Apple took the wraps off new Macs, a new CarPlay and more at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) this week.

WWDC gave Apple an opportunity to reveal new versions of the operating systems for its watch, iPad and Mac coming this fall. Apple will begin selling the new laptops starting in July at the same price as existing models and has discounted the existing 13-inch MacBook Pro to make room for the new models. Apple touted iCloud Shared Photo library at WWDC as a convenient new way for families and friends to share memories. Apple’s emphasizing new productivity features like Stage Manager to better manage the clutter of many open apps. Apple received fierce criticism earlier this year for the webcam in its premium-priced $1,599 27-inch Studio Display, which users said produced very low-quality images. Apple, a long-time Arm licensee, developed its own custom silicon to power the iPhone and the iPad. But for years, Apple’s Mac computers continued to use microprocessors made by Intel and a succession of Intel and third-party graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia and rival AMD. Apple said 98% of new car models sold in the U.S. support CarPlay — in its current implementation. Which ostensibly gives CarPlay app makers a year or so to get things with the new tech right, before people start messing around with their custom dash designs. Apple Inc. kicked off its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on Monday with an ambitious vision of CarPlay’s future, and promised buy-in from automakers, though it’ll take a while before new features actually make it to cars. As with other tech giants, Apple uses its developer event to frame both public and developer expectations. But Apple’s new CarPlay implementation is certainly a much more ambitious and complete reach than Android Auto. Apple introduced a lot of new technology this week, but it’s probably worth noting what Apple didn’t introduce: Any new Augmented Reality (AR) headset or VR device.

Apple is turning your iPhone into fintech service taking on PayPal ... (CNBC)

The new Wallet features are designed to attract more people to Apple Pay and keep customers locked into the iOS ecosystem.

And because of Apple's scale with more than a billion devices in use, a lot more people are about to be exposed to these products. But things are moving slowly in some areas, such as last year's feature that lets you add your driver's license, which is available in just a couple of states in the U.S., and with a few more expected soon. It could be a tough time for Apple to launch a new product designed to get people to buy more stuff if those trends persist throughout the year. Apple's new rivals in the buy now, pay later space have struggled in recent months as consumer spending shifts from goods to services. Many of these features aren't designed to make money for Apple directly, but they do make Apple Pay more attractive for people who haven't tried it yet. But Apple's new Wallet features are also coming at a time of great economic uncertainty.

Here are the biggest changes coming to your iPhone in Apple's new ... (CNBC)

Apple's iOS 16 offers the biggest change to the look of the iPhone's lock screen since 2014 and includes improvements to apps like Messages, Mail, and Maps.

The iPhone has an excellent, photo-quality camera that can record in 4K or 8K. Wouldn't it be better to dial into a Zoom call with that instead of the lower-quality camera on your laptop? Safety Check. A new feature called Safety Check enables users to quickly turn off all services and apps being shared with the user's family, such as location. Building on last year's Focus mode, Apple now enables users to have entirely different wallpapers or app setups for different times of day, like when the user is at work or asleep. Apple Maps is getting an update that will allow you to add different stops to a route. Plus, Apple Watch owners will be to monitor their sleep and heartbeat in the iPhone health app. Users will be able to add smaller widgets with real-time data like the weather forecast on the lock screen, and even change the font of the clock for the first time. Apple Wallet in iOS 16 will also make it easier to share digital car or home keys through messaging. Apple is also adding artificial intelligence features that can translate text in photos or videos that the user takes. But now the app is using artificial intelligence to automatically share photos with up to six people based on who's in the photo — such as kids or family members. Apple Maps can add multiple stops to a route. The other user won't get a notification but will see that the message has been edited or recalled. So, if you want these features and still have that phone, it may be time to upgrade this fall.
