The Last Jedi Star Laura Dern Open to Star Wars Return (Comicbook.com)

While Star Wars: The Last Jedi was a somewhat divisive movie among franchise fans, the 2017 film did introduced to live action a character who remains ...

"Luckily, they were very open to those and in agreement, and it was very important to Colin [Trevorrow], who cares deeply about the environment, and I think feels proud and grateful that we have a seamless opportunity in this franchise to talk about what's most important right now, in terms of protecting our home, Earth," Dern said. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker closed out the "Skywalker saga" and current Disney+ Star Wars offerings are exploring a different period within the setting — one which would likely see a different actor playing Holdo should the character appear. But to me, how she'd evolved in her area of science that she had studied as a paleontologist, our former extinction, and would have evolved as a soil scientist whose focus would be climate change to avoid another extinction. This isn't the first time that Dern has said that she'd be open to playing Holdo again. "Whether or not there's an escape pod — unfortunately I'm not the one that knows!" Speaking with ComicBook.com's Jamie Jirak, Dern said bringing Holdo back is something to take up with Kathleen Kennedy.

The actor behind Dr. Ellie Sattler reflects on the "delicious adventures" of playing flawed protagonists.

I mean, I hope the directors I’m so privileged to work with feel that way because I want to work with David Lynch for the rest of my life, and Steven Spielberg, and Noah Baumbach, Greta Gerwig. These people have become like dear friends to me, and we create a family and keep working together. And certainly in the world of David and other directors you’ve talked about and films you’ve mentioned, those flawed protagonists are delicious adventures for actors. And Ellie Sattler was a huge opportunity for me to, as a 23-year-old actress, have a voice in shaping a character that hopefully would be influential. Because of the advancement in tech and where we are at with computer science, I can be staring at still a radical practical raptor or Giganotosaurus, for that matter. But I can also, because of the mastery of a technician whose job it is to design an eye, he can, while I’m acting with that dinosaur this close to me, have the pupil dilate. But with the advancement of technology in the area of animatronics, the mastery of Stan Winston and his team was extraordinary. And I think one thing that I so loved in our efforts in the first film was for this female character to be an equal to the male characters in her scientific approach and in her humanity was Steven and I loved getting to collaborate with him on a moment that means a lot to me in the film, which is at the end of getting the power back on and the raptor sequence where Ellie’s like, “You boys take it easy. But when it ends and I collapse, Steve and I really discussed what would a human being feel at the end of this, and decided it was really important that she just fall apart, weeping and shaky, having survived this beast and seen trauma and death and a lot of horror in that scene. Has it become part of the DNA of actors, to understand that there are elements of CGI? And she’s powerful and she’s fearless and she’s a feminist. It was, would you come back to all be equals together in telling this larger story and in telling Claire and Owen’s story simultaneously and Alan and Ellie’s story as sort of pairing each other in these worlds. And it felt really amazing to get to be part of that storyline.

And it was very special,” the actress says of the two characters’ first scene together, one that recalls seeing them on a dig back in the beginning of Jurassic Park. And then to see someone like Howard take over the franchise as Claire Dearing has made Dern proud. “I think the franchise has meant a lot to people growing up, and I think [director] Colin Trevorrow wanted to bring the nostalgia of the first film back as well.” Not only that, but the character resonated with audiences for decades to follow. “I mean, Sam Neill is the dream come true,” she says. “Even when they were dealing with some hardship or injury, she was like, ‘Don’t you worry yourself.

The One Ellie Sattler Update Laura Dern Demanded Before Signing ... (Looper)

In an interview, "Jurassic World Dominion" star Laura Dern expanded on her demands for the character of Dr. Sattler before she signed on to the film.

The actress went on to add that this evolution was always a key part of Dr. Sattler's character, not only from the movie but also from the book by author Michael Crichton. She also said that the character would naturally have become an activist as well, believing that simply pursuing academics wouldn't change things, and that action would be required beyond the field. Dern, however, noted that she faced no pushback from Colin Trevorrow on the subject and that he was also passionate about environmentalism and climate change. Dern elaborated that she thought Dr. Sattler would have grown from studying soil to being an active participant in the fight against climate change, both from a scientist's and an activist's perspective. This marks the first time the three characters have been in the same film since "Jurassic Park," and in an interview, Dern expanded on her demands for the character of Dr. Sattler before she signed on to the film. Alongside Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard reprising their roles as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing, respectively, filmmaker Colin Trevorrow also returns to the director's chair, as well as taking on co-writing duties. "But to me, how she'd evolved in her area of science that she had studied as a paleontologist, our former extinction, and would have evolved as a soil scientist whose focus would be climate change to avoid another extinction," she said.

It really was part of a larger story and part of the design. And I think people may be underestimating the size and importance of Laura Dern and Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum's characters in this movie. Jurassic World: Dominion is set to debut in theaters this weekend, and its marketing is already teasing that the film will be the finale of the "Jurassic saga." This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history's most fearsome creatures. "Huge," Dern said of the franchise's themes of female empowerment. This summer, experience the epic conclusion to the Jurassic era as two generations unite for the first time.

In “Jurassic World Dominion,” the dinos are bigger, but nothing grabs your attention like the OG cast, who have reunited to risk getting eaten alive. Jeff Goldblum: “Trying to do well by our species and by all of our fellow creatures here.” Tricera-cops, but in “Jurassic World Dominion,” that’s not really how it works for the humans, and not just any humans, the big three of the original “Jurassic World” cast are back. She added that it would be heartbreaking not to have the experience of playing her again. She previously told the Evening Standard (via ComicBook) that she’d be open to playing Holdo again. When creating The Last Jedi, director Rian Johnson initially wanted the character to be very close to her description in the book. Although the novel version of Vice-Admiral Amilyn Holdo received acclaim over the years, her movie counterpart (Laura Dern) received some backlash for being too different from the source material. She also has some impressive Star Wars director credits, having worked on episodes of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. In the realm of Star Wars movies, The Last Jedi has been a contentious topic since its release.

'Jurassic World Dominion': Colin Trevorrow Knew Sequel Had to ... (IndieWire)

The filmmaker told IndieWire why it was essential that Dern's Dr. Ellie Sattler drive the final film in the franchise's latest trilogy.

“There’s this moment at the end where suddenly there’s this lineup, everybody slams into the frame all of a sudden. The film started shooting in February 2020 but was temporarily shut down a month later due to the pandemic. “Sam Neill had ‘Jurassic Park III,’ where he was the engine, and Jeff Goldblum had ‘The Lost World.’ I wanted this to be Ellie Sattler’s story.” That came from just a lot of conversations with her. And Ellie, who has turned away from dinosaurs to dedicate her time and expertise to issues plaguing the world’s crops, is front and center. As the director told IndieWire, placing Ellie at its center was essential, mostly because the beloved character never had the chance to really drive her own film after the first one.
