Hell in a Cell: Cody Rhodes overcomes gruesome injury to thrill ... (The Independent)

The show also saw Bianca Belair battle Asuka and Becky Lynch for the Raw Women's Championship.

Theory is said to be WWE’s standout star for the future, and it’s not hard to see why. Calling back to Corbin’s own attack on him, Moss trapped his foe in a chair and threw steps on to it for good measure to ensure there was a decisive end to their no holds barred match. Styles was forced to sit out a latter portion of the match suffering heavy bleeding from an injury, with Edge spearing Balor for the win. Asuka has been a major miss for the company for much of the last year, while Belair is so effortlessly smooth. The Canadian ended victorious thanks to a Stunner. There would be no fairytale to Ali’s night however - after battering his opponent’s injured knee, Theory hit an A-Town-Down to retain his gold. The Visionary, ever the troll, came to the ring resplendent in the polka dots made famous in WWE by his opponent’s father, the late Dusty Rhodes. The affair even temporarily became a bullrope match as the homage continued. A sense of anticipation built in the arena as Rhodes made his entrance, a gasp audible as he took off his jacket to reveal the very obvious injury which he’s said to have suffered whilst weight training. In fairness, Owens’ pure fury at the ludicrousness of it all has at least always been at the heart of their feud, which probably enables the light relief to continue for longer than it might. Somewhat peversley, the two seemed to revel in being able to build their match around it - as you would in natural combat of course. The loss of Rhodes will be keenly felt. At the climax, Rhodes turned the tables by channelling Rollins’ mentor Triple H, delivering a sledgehammer shot and a Pedigree on his way to victory - secured in the end by a Cross Rhodes.

What does the future hold for WWE star Cody Rhodes after suffering a full pectoral muscle tear prior to Hell in a Cell?

Right after his Hell in a Cell match, Cody Rhodes cut an off-camera promo to address the WWE Universe. The American Nightmare told fans that the decision to work the match was his decision alone. Now, we will wait to see what the aftermath of this injury will be. Meltzer would go on to say that the injury was a “weightlifting injury,” not an in-ring one. Dave Meltzer reported this injury a few hours prior to the pay-per-view, saying that Rhodes hurt himself while doing some weight training. Despite Rhodes’ injury, the duo managed to have arguably the best match of the WWE event. What’s even more shocking is the fact that Rhodes continued with his match against Rollins in the pay-per-view.

Cody Rhodes painfully stole the show with torn pec at Hell in a Cell (New York Post)

Cody Rhodes, whether you agree with his decision to wrestle injured or not, delivered a show of resilience and fortitude that will be talked about forever.

It feels like Edge has added to his Hall of Fame list of accomplishments by being the first in a long time to figure out that having a woman in your faction that the guys are not allowed to hit by WWE rules can help you win matches. It will be interesting to see what WWE does next with the Judgment Day because, unlike AEW, there are not a ton of factions – if any – for them to feud with. Theory won clean and Ali being a strong babyface only helped add to the crowd’s distain for him, so mission accomplished. Also it feels like WWE needs to cash in on how much Liv Morgan has improved other than her being the third wheel and losing – though his short stink with Balor and Styles did her some good. Bob Lashley may be in the best position to take over as Monday Night Raw’s top babyface with Rhodes likely to miss significant time and he may do so with at least Cedric Alexander by his side. All three of these women are over with the crowd and Asuka’s striking and style brought a refreshing element to what we have already seen from Lynch and Belair. The finish had Lynch hit a Manhandle slam on Asuka but Belair – who Becky has just tossed out of the ring — came back and pulled Lynch off to score the pin and retain the title. I hear the portion of fans that will say he shouldn’t have been out there and how could you have Rhodes with that serious of an injury earn a clean win over Seth Rollins – who continued his wardrobe savagery dressing in Dusty Rhodes polka dots? Was it uncomfortable to watch Rhodes take bumps at times and deliver those Cross-Rhodes? Yes. But Rhodes has always said, “Do the work” and tweeted for “the love of the game” prior to the match. He smartly waited until the very last moment to remove his jacket and got a dramatic gasp from the crowd when they saw his injury. And that’s exactly what they did, using keno sticks, sledge hammers, tables and bull ropes – a Rhodes family specialty — to write the final chapter. While Hell in a Cell lacked a game-changing moment or surprise that would have taken it to another level, it was a pay-per-view filled with some superb wrestling that’s starting become a pleasant regular occurrence for WWE.

CM Punk, who had just beaten Adam Page for the AEW championship May 29, suffered an undisclosed injury on the June 1 show at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif.

Wednesday's episode of Dynamite in Independence, Mo., will open with a battle royal, with the winner of that match going on to face Jon Moxley in the show’s main event. Danielson, who has formed a tag team with Moxley, would have been among the favorites if he would be able to be in the Battle Royal. Scorpio Sky, the TNT champion, noted a muscle injury in his right leg early in his match with Dante Martin on Friday led to the leg being almost useless in the match. It is too early to know when Punk would be able to return, as he’s not had the surgery, but the hope is it would be before the end of the year. WWE’s event also topped a $1 million gate on Sunday with more than 12,000 paid, and the Rhodes vs. In fact, it was the highest attended television taping show in pro wrestling in the U.S. this year. Forbidden Door will likely top both of those shows for paid attendance, as it was also a sellout just minutes after tickets were put on sale. But as much as that match will be etched in the memories of everyone who saw it, Sunday’s match is likely to be similarly remembered. Then again, it hardly made sense to wrestle more than 24 minutes on a completely torn pec while in what had to be incredible pain with his entire right side of his chest and much of his right arm badly bruised. It’s hard to call this the greatest match of Rhodes’s career, as his 2019 match with older brother Dustin was uniquely emotional. The decision was made by owner Tony Khan not to have Punk vacate the title. For Punk, his injury led to the creation of an AEW interim championship. At the start of Sunday’s pay-per-view, WWE did announce the injury, claiming Rhodes had a partial tear from a brawl on Raw with Rollins on Monday, and then tore the muscle completely off the bone while lifting weights late in the week.

AEW has generally had good luck with its stars staying healthy, allowing the company to tell elongated stories over several months (or years) without missing a beat. Danielson was conspicuously absent from AEW's California debut last week and missed a meet-and-greet with fans because of an undisclosed injury. “I would figure that’s SummerSlam [Becky Lynch vs Bianca Belair]. It was very clear that they were holding that match off for a while," Meltzer said. Not only did Cody wrestle essentially with one arm, he put on a banger with Seth Rollins and came away victorious.

I’m officially done with Seth Rollins.” While he enjoyed sharing the ring with the former WWE Champion, he’s putting ‘The Visionary’ in the rear-view mirror.
