"The magic of the Derby goes back to its history," Cooper said. He is best over this mile trip and handles any ground so has every chance of landing the hat-trick. He cruised into the race and showed plenty of pace to settle things quickly. He has tumbled down the weights and trainer Andrew Balding is in good form. He’s up 9lb so needs to improve but is in cracking form. He is best over this mile trip and handles any ground so has every chance of landing the hat-trick. His last two wins have come over 7f which is a slight concern but he has lots of ability. He’s lightly raced for a sprinter of his age so could improve. A repeat of that could see him in the places. Fellow King Power runner Sunday Sovereign went down in a tight finish when second at York last month. That was his turf debut after doing well on the all-weather and he should be capable of a lot better under William Buick. Mrs Fitzherbert stepped out of handicap company to get the better of Bashkirova last time. He looks on a fair weight and won’t be far away.

Talking Horses: Six key questions ahead of the 243rd Epsom Derby (Irish Examiner)

Desert Crown is the favourite to give Michael Stoute a sixth victory in the premier Classic.

The Derby inexperience of Desert Crown’s jockey Richard Kingscote could also be viewed as a negative for the favourite. He will obviously have to have taken a massive leap forward from that effort to land a blow here but he has reportedly done so and the step up to a mile and a half should really suit. In the absence of the injured Luxembourg, the Irish challenge is more solid than spectacular. The Charlie Appleby-trained Dubawi colt has a similar profile to last year’s hero Adayar in that he will arrive at Epsom having been turned over when expected to deliver in his Lingfield trial. One obvious concern for Desert Crown supporters is his lack of experience with Stoute himself admitting he’d have liked to given the son of Nathaniel a run or two extra ahead of his date with destiny. On recent history, there has to be.

We recommend ExpressVPN (opens in new tab). Irish nationals travelling abroad can use a VPN (opens in new tab) to access Virgin Media Player without being blocked. As a rule, we’d suggest a paid-for service such as ExpressVPN (opens in new tab) which offers a 100 per cent risk-free money back guarantee. Next up is Stone Age, sired by 2001 winner Galileo, who had his own big win at the Derby Trial Stakes at Leopardstown in early May and is priced around 7-2 with bookmakers. Trainer Aidan O'Brien is already the most successful in Derby history and will hope he has another potential victor on his hands after another of his charges Luxembourg, the Queen's fancy for the event, pulled out with muscle problems. For the Derby, you may wish to choose 'London' for ITV Hub. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) helps you get around this obstacle. Even if you have subscribed to the relevant 2022 Derby rights holders, you won't be able to use them when outside your own country. UK viewers can watch free on ITV. Make sure you know how to watch a free Derby live stream from where you are. Ready to see the world's finest nags battle it out over 1mile 4 furlongs and 6 yards of Epsom Downs in flat racing marquee event? It also comes a week after Lester Piggott, who won the race a record nine times, died at the age of 86 and it seems certain the legendary jockey will be remembered in some form. For three-year-old colts and fillies, the Derby has run on the first Saturday of June since 1780 and not even the COVID-19 pandemic stopped flat racing's most prestigious event, albeit a month late in July 2020.
