Ireland's wait for a Nations League victory rolls on as Stephen Kenny's side fell to a 1-0 defeat away to Armenia in a grim result for them.
Eduard Spertsyan was allowed to weave his way through Ireland’s half and was not closed down as he fired a rocket toward the goal. Ireland were unable to keep up that momentum after the interval as Ireland were once again sloppy in the early stages. Ogbene was the best player of that half, and he should’ve scored right before half-time when he was left completely unmarked from a free-kick. Long balls rained into the Armenian box but nothing was doing. After struggling to get the ball out from under his feet, the ball eventually came to the Rotherham man but it was ultimately put wide. The Burnley man, along with the rest of his teammates, kicked on after that dodgy start and Kenny’s side soon dominated the ball in Armenia’s half.
However, there was nothing he could do to stop the Armenian goal. Nathan Collins - 7. Pushed incredibly high up the right flank, quickly snuffing out a number ...
He certainly looked to get on the ball, although he did lack a bit of energy in the middle third. His touch let him down on a couple of occasions, including on the Armenia goal. Was a constant threat with his dribbling ability, putting together a couple of impressive mazy runs in the opening half. To his credit, he looked like Ireland's only real threat as they chased the game late on. He was probably Ireland's best defender on the night. He showed a remarkable calmness on the ball, skipping by opposition attackers at times before playing some lovely passes.
Republic of Ireland's Nations League misery continued as Eduard Spertsyan blasted Armenia to victory in Yerevan. The midfielder hammered a long-range ...
Hendrick curled a 69th-minute shot into Yurchenko’s midriff, but it was Armenia who took the lead with 15 minutes left on the clock when Spertsyan was allowed to close in on goal before unleashing a 25-yard strike which beat Kelleher’s despairing dive and went in off the upright. With skipper Seamus Coleman and Enda Stevens operating as wing-backs, Ireland went straight on to the offensive in an effort to seize the initiative, but it was Kelleher, playing in place of the injured Gavin Bazunu, who was called upon to keep out Tigran Barseghyan’s skidding sixth-minute effort after Nathan Collins had surrendered the ball. Callum Robinson had a mishit first-half shot cleared off the line and Chiedozie Ogbene headed over when he might have done better, but they wilted after the break and were caught by a sucker punch, albeit one delivered with aplomb.
Stephen Kenny admitted the Republic of Ireland had only themselves to blame after slipping to defeat in their Nations League opener in Armenia.
We worked really hard and earned our luck with the goal. We created some good chances but we didn’t take them, some half-chances, but they didn’t really have any chances bar the offside goal, so it was disappointing overall.” “I felt the last 20-25 minutes of the first half, we were really in control, but we didn’t start the second half like that at all.
Caoimhin Kelleher 6 - First competitive start after Gavin Bazunu missed out with a back injury. Was rarely tested before the killer goal, but alert when he ...
Chiedozie Ogbene 6 - Produced some sublime touches early on and was a handful for the home defence with his willingness to chase even lost causes, but should have done better with a header when unmarked. Seamus Coleman 6 - Was a useful attacking outlet high on the ride side and linked well with those inside. Caoimhin Kelleher 6 - First competitive start after Gavin Bazunu missed out with a back injury.
Ireland travelled to Armenia and lost 1-0 to a hard-working team that were deserving of the three points in the opening game.
He was trying to make things happen, but it wasn’t his day. Showed his promise, but he himself will know he had more to give. Some of his set-pieces were poor though, and he could have done more to boss the midfield. Definitely should have scored just before half-time, but his energy and attitude was spot on. In this system, wing-backs need to be the creative players, and Stevens didn’t do it often enough. Got down well to two saves in the first few minutes, with Armenia clearly attempting to test him out.
