THREE GOALS and three points closer to the holy grail - now bring on Montenegro on Monday. Will Smallbone and Mipo Odubeko were the heroes in orange tonight ...
And his teammates were happy to oblige, knowing that he would rarely waste possession. He made a couple of loose passes in the first-half and struggled to impose himself in the game, but he was spot-on with his assist for Odubeko shortly after the hour. His low drive whistled past the dive of Damijanovic and into the bottom left hand corner of the net. The Motherwell ace timed the return to perfection, playing Odubeko behind the last defender and giving him an opportunity to take aim from the edge of the area. Goalkeeper Luka Damijanovic got a hand to the near-post shot, but the pace of Smallbone’s effort ensured it made it into the net. But orange has been a good colour for the seniors since the new away kit was introduced late last year - and it was a good look for the Under-21s tonight.
IT is one Balkan down and another to go - as Will Smallbone and Mipo Odubeko kept Ireland in the hunt for UEFA Under-21 Championship qualification.Sma.
It was good fortune that the pair were still on the field to combine for the goal as Evan Ferguson and Ollie O’Neill were waiting for a stoppage to come on with the visitors on top. It was a goal his performance deserved as he was a regular threat, with a missed header in the first half while he also had an effort blocked early in the second half. He received a long ball from goalkeeper Brian Maher and played in Ross Tierney who returned the ball for Odubeko to drill the ball home. And he responded with a fine performance, with an assist for Smallbone’s opener on 16 minutes and then a fine second himself on 65 minutes. His opening goal was well worked - he showed his pace to sprint onto a deft flick by Odubeko, hurdle a challenge from Nenad Nikic and drive the ball under the goalkeeper. IT is one Balkan down and another to go - as Will Smallbone and Mipo Odubeko kept Ireland in the hunt for UEFA Under-21 Championship qualification.
Ireland's U21s claimed an important in their chase for qualification for the 2022/23 European Championship, with Will Smallbone impressing.

Southampton midfielder's brace either side of another from West Ham striker Mipo Odubeko helps see off Bosnia in Tallaght.
Ireland were on the ropes but they reacted with a counter punch that settled the contest. As it happened, the Derby County defender was not part of the matchday squad but that will change sooner rather than later. Absent with injury for the first four games of this campaign, his return has been a major plus. Odubeko, of course, was playing just his second game after an absence of four years from an Irish shirt. Odubeko had a chance to double that seven minutes after the restart when Smallbone collected a loose ball out of the Bosnian defence and played him in but the shot was delayed and, eventually, smothered by the keeper. Next up is their second-last qualifier, which is back here in Tallaght against Montenegro on Monday.

"Montenegro are a decent outfit. However Ireland were indebted to Derry City stopper Brian Maher for keeping their lead intact. The Republic of Ireland produced a clinical performance at Tallaght Stadium to sweep past Bosnia and Herzegovina and pick up a crucial three points in their quest to make the UEFA European Under-21 Championships.
Ireland's Under-21s took a big step towards a first European Championships as a brace from Will Smallbone either side of Mipo Odubeko's devastating finish ...
Ross Tierney collected the ball and played Odubeko through, who coolly slotted his first goal of the campaign. It briefly looked like Ireland would grab another, but the visitors scrambled and cleared to safety. Mipo Odubeko brilliantly flicked the ball onto Smallbone, who outpaced Nenad Nikić before driving it through the legs of Luka Damijanović to put Ireland ahead. Ivan Basić’s powerful free kick failed to trouble Brian Maher, standing behind an Ireland defence who were holding their own after the opener. Ireland now move to within a point of Sweden with a game in hand. Ireland held their breath for a moment as Amar Memić was found unmarked at the back post, but his tame header sailed wide.
Ireland face Montenegro at Tallaght Stadium needing to win to stand any chance of qualifying for the European Championships.
“I think the aim obviously is to top the group and get through straight away, but we understand how good Italy are as a side. It’s a good group and we’ve left ourselves so close to qualifying, I don’t see why we should fear anyone really. We started well today and on Monday if we can get another good turnout from the fans, I think they helped us tonight, that would really help us going into the final game against Italy. The problem is now, June is always a difficult window for UK-based players. The lads know that, we had a chat with the lads. To keep a clean sheet and to score three goals against a decent enough team.
The Ireland U21s moved a step closer to securing at least a play-off place for the Euros after a convincing win over Bosnia & Herzegovina this evening.
Ferguson showed some nice touches after coming on, although Ireland did not seem too intent in committing bodies forward after taking the two-goal lead. He would have his goal just after the hour mark. Had a glorious chance to open the scoring for Ireland after 14 minutes, only for his header to drift wide. Smallbone was always willing to look for possession early in the game, but his passing did let him down on occasion. Kilkenny is the heartbeat of the team as currently constructed, with most Ireland attacks coming through him in some form. He looked dangerous at times, putting a couple of excellent deliveries into the opposition penalty area.
Republic of Ireland 3 Bosnia & Herzegovina 0. Will Smallbone found the net in each half at Tallaght Stadium on Friday night as the Republic of Ireland ...
If this finish put Ireland within sight of a win, then Smallbone’s second with nine minutes remaining well and truly placed the outcome beyond doubt. This was swiftly followed by Maher’s excellent stop off a Jasmin Osmić strike as the pressure on Ireland continued to be ramped up. Should they achieve a similar result against Montenegro in the same venue on Monday, it would move them into a play-off spot — at the very least — with a final encounter with Italy still to come.

Ross Tierney was alive to the bit of quality and collected the ball on the run. He fired another over with similar unease, albeit from further outside the box, and also delivered a pinpoint corner onto the head of Muharemovic, which Lee O’Connor had to clear off the line. A superb looped flick on the swivel completely took Bosnia centre back Tarik Muharemovic out of the game. If his second was about precision, his first was all about the power of the near-post strike which was too hot to handle for Luka Damijanovic. That chance was created by Odubeko with a glancing first-time pass that was completely misjudged by Muharemovic. Tierney used the run of his partner and slid the ball invitingly in front, Odubeko obliged and was never going to fluff his line, delivering a precise finish into the bottom corner. This was only his second appearance in the campaign, his late casting in the role down to a self-enforced absence from the international scene that was partially due to being left out of the U17 Euros that took place here in 2019.

The Young Lions now need four points from their three remaining match to reach Euro 2023. The 19-year-old, who spent the second half of the season on loan at EFL League One side Doncaster Rovers and earned his first U21s cap in March, coolly netted from a one-on-one situation on 63 minutes to put Ireland two goals ahead. Mipo Odubeko scored his first goal for the Republic of Ireland U21s on just his second outing, firing home the team’s second in a 3-0 win against Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Nearly 18 months on from his ACL injury, Will Smallbone seems primed to get back to his best after netting a brace for the Ireland U21s.
Before my injury I felt like I was really hitting my stride, but to get a big injury was a huge setback at such a young age, I wasn’t really prepared for it. I had a chance at the end and I would have loved to put that away to get my first international hat-trick, but three goals and a win is a good start... First it was a hamstring issue at the start of the following season, something that limited his availability for a number of weeks. Now, it’s hopefully a time to forget about that period and kick on in a football sense. His eye for goal was also very much on show when it came to finishing the couple of chances that dropped his way. Every professional footballer will tell you that setbacks are par for the course for those hoping to make a career in the game.

Beset by injuries for the best part of two years, Will Smallbone showed glimpses of his undoubted quality for Ireland's U21s on Friday night.
“It was a big win for us [against Bosnia],” he explains. “Now, it’s hopefully a time to forget about that period and kick on in a football sense. “People underestimate at times how much the big injuries can affect you mentally. “It was really tough,” he explains. It’s my first 90 minutes for a long time after my knee injury. “I’m buzzing,” he explained after the game.
