The Prince of Wales put his riding skills to the test on Thursday as he followed the carriage procession down The Mall on horseback.

In front of the trio were three carriages full of royals. In the first carriage was the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge, accompanied by their three children – George, Charlotte and Louis. The 73-year-old heir to the throne was riding a horse called George. Alongside him, William was riding Derby, and Princess Anne was aboard Sir John.

Prince William, Prince Charles and Princess Anne arrived at Trooping the Colour on horseback ahead of receiving the salute for the first time.

Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4, looked too cute in blue outfits as they waved to the crowds from their seats. The Queen, who has been experiencing mobility issues, did not join other members of the royal family as they arrived in cars and carriages. The Duke of Cambridge, 39, the Prince of Wales, 73, and the Princess Royal, 71, accepted the Trooping the Colour salute as colonels of the Welsh Guards, the Irish Guards and the Blues and Royals for the first time.

PRINCE CHARLES has appeared on horseback at Trooping the Colour as the nation marks the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

In 1805, the custom of Trooping the Colour to honour the sovereign's birthday was first adopted, however, it lapsed soon afterwards. Charles was followed by the Duke of Cambridge. This comes ahead of the royal salute on the parade ground. Thousands of people draped in Union Jack flags, party hats and plastic tiaras lined The Mall as the sun blazed down. Handmade signs have been hung over the barriers, with one simply saying, "Thank you". The Prince of Wales then inspected the line of guards on horseback followed by William and Anne who rode side by side behind the heir to the throne.

What could be more British than watching wheeler dealer Mick Carter pouring Prince Charles a glass of lukewarm Cava in the rain?

What could be more British than watching wheeler dealer Mick Carter pouring Prince Charles a glass of lukewarm Cava in the rain? In reality, the heir apparent was shown around the set by Sue Nicholls who (still) plays Audrey Roberts on a visit to the old Granada Studios in Manchester – later, producers asked Kensington Palace for permission to use the photos of his visit in the live broadcast as part of a news bulletin. They’ve been around for most of our lives and tell relatable, important stories with wit and pathos; they’re a near-daily source of laughter and drama. In the 70 years since her coronation, the Royal Family have embraced and celebrated the country’s soaps – it’s made them more relatable, good-humored, in touch with what is important to us as a nation (even if that is Janine Butcher pushing her husband Barry off a cliff). One actor who was there for both occasions was William Roach, who plays Ken Barlow, and has been a regular on the series since its first ever episode. It may seem like a strange way to celebrate 70 years of the Queen’s reign – is EastEnders, a TV drama that popularised the (iconic) phrase “I didn’t just become a little bit of a slag, I became a total slag” really the place to celebrate such a momentous, once-in-a-lifetime occasion?

EastEnders, review: was Prince Charles and Camilla's visit to ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

An admirable Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall proved they were dab hands at small talk – no matter how bizarre the conversation.

I had no idea if this was the actor or the character talking (I checked later, and it was the character) and I’m not sure the Prince did either, but he chatted away with practised ease. A young man told the Prince that he was “a graduate of the Prince’s Trust” and had met him 10 years ago. The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall gamely appeared in the show, playing themselves.

Mr Fry said: "He did tell me ‒ I think it's ok to repeat this ‒ the Prince of Wales did tell me once that the best piece of advice his father had ever given him was: when you’re doing a lineup and there are women, always look only into their eyes. Mr Fry said he explained to Charles that Prince Albert is "a piece of intimate jewellery.” "And he got to them and the first thing Emma Bunton said to him was: ‘Oh sir, sir, hi miss sir, do you have a Prince Albert?’

Yet royal historian Dr Ed Owens said Charles is now a “regent in all but name”. “Given the queen’s frailty, she is unable to perform more demanding aspects of her royal role,” he told i. This is not the case for the Queen, who remains head of state and in full control of the monarchy, Mr Fitzwilliam stressed. “Having Charles more visible in these moments is a way of slowly getting the public used to seeing him take more centre-stage, in a way that might be to try lessen the impact of the change in monarch when the time comes,” she said.
