Scotland are perhaps stronger collectively but Ukraine have the edge individually and possess a special talent in Ruslan Malianovsky. This is set to be a close match but it is there where Ukraine may have the difference. In what is set to be a special atmosphere given Scotland’s World Cup dreams and the emotion surrounding Ukraine, this is tough to call. Scotland are without Kieran Tierney and Ryan Jack due to injury, while Nathan Patterson is doubtful after spending several weeks on the side-lines after undergoing minor ankle surgery.

Scotland v Ukraine: Scots head into vital World Cup play-off clash ... (Scottish Daily Record)

The Lanarkshire Live Sport team give their thoughts ahead of tonight's huge game at Hampden.

A place in what is effectively the play-off final against Wales awaits on Sunday, and 'all' we have to do is get past Ukraine at Hampden tonight in the semi-final. Outside the Tartan Army, of course. I fear Gareth Bale more than I worry about Wales, but we'll take it a game at a time. The eyes of the footballing world will be on this for what will no doubt be an emotional affair, with Scotland the team everyone wants to lose. They've also not lost in their last seven games. This is the best squad Scotland have had for some time, so should go into it with confidence, even without talisman Kieran Tierney, and with Hampden rocking, hopefully we can get over the line and into the final.

However, Scotland coach Steve Clark has said his squad is also fired up as they hope to reach their first World Cup for 24 years. All eyes will be on Glasgow on Wednesday night as Scotland take on Ukraine in their crucial World Cup qualifying play-off semi-final. We go over everything you need to know ahead of the World Cup qualifying playoff match between Scotland and Ukraine on Wednesday.

Expect Steve Clarke’s side to get the edge and the win over Oleksandr Petrakov’s squad on Wednesday. It’s set to be an emotionally charged match, with so much on the line for Ukraine after what their country has had to suffer through. Steve Clarke’s side fared well in UEFA World Cup qualifying, finishing second place in Group F just behind Denmark. They won seven of their nine matches, finishing with 23 points, earning their spot in the qualifying playoffs. Ukraine finished second in their group as well and managed not to lose any of their contests, but they only won two games and earned six draws as they finished six points behind Group D winners France. He’s still expected to start for Clarke’s squad despite any residual hangover from the narrow 1-0 loss itself. It’s worth noting that the winner of Sunday’s match between Scotland/Ukraine and Wales will be placed into Group B along with the United States, England, and Iran.

4 mins: Scotland are doing the pressing in the early stages and a long diagonal ball from McTominay is headed on, Niall Quinn style, by Dykes for Che Adams to chase. Scotland v Ukraine: World Cup 2022 qualifying playoff – live! (The Guardian)

A playoff final place is at stake but this will be an emotional, significant occasion for reasons far beyond football. Join Scott Murray for updates.

While Ukraine are looking to add to their one and only appearance at the World Cup, in 2006, Scotland have dreams of their own, hoping to make it for the first time since 1998. Yaremchuk tries to retrieve it with a ludicrous sliding challenge on Gilmour, and he’ll have to spend the rest of this highly charged evening on a deserved yellow card. (We’re still stuck in Poland by the way, because some people in the UK can’t get their heads out of their arses and give us permission for the beautiful dumbass cat.)” The national anthem of Ukraine rings around Hampden, sung loudly and proudly, and with great determination. Yaremchuk tees up Tsygankov, who from the edge of the box sends a rising screamer goalwards. “It will be interesting to see how Scotland manage to cope with being in England’s usual situation of the rest of the world hoping that they lose,” quips Stuart Rarity. 23 min: ... but this is a good response by Scotland. First Adams goes over in the box as he tries to get on the end of an aimless left-wing cross. 28 min: Dykes wriggles his way out of a tight spot in his own half and looks long for Adams down the right. Flower of Scotland meanwhile gets another good airing in the stands. 20 min: Scotland don’t clear the corner, and soon enough Yaremchuk is snatching at a shot from ten yards. The pass isn’t up to standard, but once again that’s a decent situation crafted out of very little, and it’ll give Scotland heart. The busy Dykes drops back to make sure nothing comes of it.

It's not quite clicking for the home side and the front two need to get more involved. The rebound falls kindly to McGinn who has a free header and somehow heads it wide. Dovbyk adds a third for Ukraine on the break. They've come to Hampden Park and upset the home side to reach the final. McGinn has another follow up effort from further out this time but it's blocked and goes out for a corner.

Oleksandr Zubkov (Ukraine) left footed shot from the centre of the box misses to the left. Artem Dovbyk (Ukraine) left footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner. Three of those four goals have come away from home in Kazakhstan, Finland and Scotland. The level of expectation surrounding the national team has been raised. Coach Petrakov spoke from the heart in his post-match news conference. Around him, his compatriots celebrated wildly on an astonishing night for Ukraine as a football team, and a nation. But as Scotland pushed, they were even more exposed at the back. With the goal at his mercy, the Aston Villa man headed wide. In truth, the warning signs had been there. This match was a long time coming. Luck will still smile on us brother-Ukrainians." Andriy Yarmolenko and Roman Yaremchuk struck either side of half-time, before Callum McGregor gave Scotland hope late on.
