Who are Nottingham Forest? Trophies, history and famous players (Sporting News)

Nottingham Forest are an iconic English football club with a record in European competition to rival the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Forest are undoubtedly helped by being based in a city with a population of more than 330,000. Founded in 1862, County are recognised as the world's oldest football league club. Clough joined Forest as a Jose Mourinho-style brash young manager in 1975 and transformed the club who had been 13th in the second tier at the time. Trevor Francis scored the only goal in Munich to seal victory over Malmo. Forest's reward was a place in the playoffs, where they earned a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Sheffield United to reach the final at Wembley. When he was interviewed during the final season of his reign, Clough insisted: "There's only one way to play football – that's on grass. Clough's indelible influence and ideas about how the game should be played live on in Forest fans' preferred playing style. It would be the last season when Forest would feature in European competition. Six years after becoming league members, Forest won the FA Cup for the first time by beating Derby County in front of 62,000 supporters at Crystal Palace, enjoying an underdog 3-1 victory over opponents who had thrashed them 5-0 less than a week earlier. John Robertson is widely considered to have been Forest's greatest ever player. Until they moved to their beloved City Ground home in 1898, Nottingham Forest Football Club played at a variety of stadiums including Trent Bridge, now better known as a cricket ground. Worse was to follow.

Huddersfield Town v Nottingham Forest: Championship play-off final ... (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Who will earn promotion to the Premier League? Join Rob Smyth to find out.

This game is about money, of course it is, but it’s also about glory, euphoria and the creation of eternal memories. But then so has Steve Cooper, who took over in September with Forest bottom of the league. For most, it’s the biggest game of their life so far. Good for the owner of the Vinyl Whistle ending it at Wembley.” In a plutocracy they have no real place being at Wembley. But this game is about so much more than money. Carlos Corberan, in his second season at the club, has done the most spectacular job. No surprises in the Forest team. For many, it’s the biggest game they’ll ever play. You don’t have to be a Forest fan to have the softest spot for this man. These playoff finals often take a while to get going; some of them never really do. Steve Cooper discusses Nottingham Forests tunnel vision, past experience and standing on the shoulders of giants; Watch Huddersfield vs Nottingham Forest in ...

"They have been brilliant, the supporters, this year and it has just been a really good example of what this club means to everybody. "It's nice to see all generations of supporters and diversity that are really getting behind the football club. "I have got to know so many of the European Cup-winning team and I'm fascinated by their stories, but probably more fascinated by their love for the club because it's really strong and a lot of them still come to the games, a lot of them are still visible at the training ground now. Everything we do is for the supporters and, if we keep this connection going, it gives us a real chance." Over the past two seasons - his first two in senior management - Cooper took Swansea to the Championship play-offs. If we want the support that we want - everyone wants to be well-supported - then you have to play your part as well. We knew April was going to be a pivotal month in terms of where we would end up in the league because we had eight games and we managed to win seven and lose one against Luton. But even when you look at the second semi-final when things weren't going completely to plan, the crowd got better and they pulled us through. There have been a couple of times where I have just had a look at the league table and, though we've gone on some really good runs this year, we didn't seem to be going anywhere. Truth be told, the international break came at a good time because we gave ourselves a chance to get a little bit of work done with the team. "I cannot think of a game where there has been a spare seat in the Forest allocation. None of us liked the sight of being where we were.
