Cathaoirleach contacts gardaí after image used by criminals to scam hundreds of thousands of euro.

Mr Daly was appointed Cathaoirleach of the Seanad in 2020. According to a report in The Sunday Times, one woman sent more than €300,000 (NZ$500,000) to criminals, after becoming infatuated with the profile, which used the image of Mr Daly. Photographs of Mark Daly, a Senator from Kerry, were used by scammers on Tinder as part of a plot to swindle women out of the equivalent of hundreds of thousands of euro, primarily in New Zealand.

In a statement, Senator Daly says he's horrified and genuinely shocked that his image was being used in such an awful activity. The fraudster behind the Tinder profile managed to scam her out of 315,000 euro.

Senator Mark Daly was made aware of the scam after he was contacted by a news outlet investigating the claims.

- Be careful what you post and make public on the internet. He said: "Oh Christ, OK… what the hell is that for?... A Kerry Senator was left horrified after he was made aware that his pictures were being used on a Tinder profile to scam women out of thousands.

The fraud campaign has led to calls for a parliamentary committee to be established in New Zealand to look into the series of scams. According to a report in the Sunday Times, another woman sent more than NZ$1million to someone operating under the fake name ‘Fred Ritterman’. This profile also stole and used pictures of Daly. One New Zealand woman sent the equivalent of €315,000 in New Zealand Dollars to a profile using several pictures of the Fianna Fáil politician.
