Boston Celtics: 2 unsung studs from C's Game 5 win over Miami (Hardwood Houdini)

The Boston Celtics took care of business in Game 5 and, now, are one win away from the NBA Finals. Today, we pinpoint 2 studs from Wednesday's exhibition.

Though the C’s and Heat traded blows back and forth right out of the gates, by the time the third quarter closed Boston found itself pulling away, as they went on a 10-2 run over the final three minutes of the period and held a 69-58 edge heading into the fourth. With this, it was obvious momentum was on their side and, as a result, they never relented from this point forward, as Ime Udoka pulled out his starters with just under two minutes remaining and went on to win the contest 93-80. Things started off quite even for both clubs, as no lead extended past seven points through the first two quarters and it was the first time all series where the half-time score was separated by five or fewer points.

The Boston Celtics followed up their dominant Game 4 performance with a second straight commanding victory over the Miami Heat in Game 5 on Thursday night.

If you were watching this game and felt like the Heat couldn't throw a beach ball into the ocean, you were onto something. After scoring just 14 total points in Game 3 and 4 combined, Butler mustered just 13 points in what amounted to be Miami's most important game of the season. In addition to just missing shots, there was an overall lack of aggression from Butler, illustrated by the fact that he took just four total free throws in the game. Clearly, Boston will want to take care of business at home in Game 6 in order to avoid a do-or-die Game 7 in Miami. The Boston Celtics followed up their dominant Game 4 performance with a second straight commanding victory over the Miami Heat in Game 5 on Thursday night. Historically, teams that win Game 5 in that scenario go on to win the series nearly 82 percent of the time.

As Boston pulled away in the fourth quarter, Horford and Tatum hooked up again. When they smell blood in the water, it’s over. This is a great drive and better pass to find Grant Williams in his corner office: Boston outscored Miami 32-16 in the third quarter. 3. Boston hung around in the first half, as we said above. 'Story of the Game': Spurs Ex Derrick White Praised by Celtics in ... (Sports Illustrated)

"He's been essential within the key plan with that same type of aggression," Boston guard Jaylen Brown said. "He was just fantastic tonight."

Udoka heaped praises on his former Spurs player Monday, which has clearly seeped over to the rest of the team as well given Brown's comments. As one of Boston's best defensive players, White was tasked with guarding Miami stars Jimmy Butler and Kyle Lowry on numerous occasions in the win. White also added five assists, two steals, and one block, as his natural defensive and floor instincts continue to shine on the biggest stage he's been on in his six-year career. He started in place of injured Defensive Player of the Year, Marcus Smart, on Monday, but returned to his role off the bench Wednesday and didn't miss a beat. (White and Al Horford) were definitely the story of the game tonight." He might not get all the credit, but the way he started Game 4, we came out and were able to jump on them early.

And so he was slipping behind some of our switches and so we wanted to keep a big on him and play him like a big and play in a more traditional drop coverage." The Heat have needed to play with immense physicality, force turnovers, push the ball and crash the glass in order to stay with Boston. It is difficult to live that way for a whole series. By giving the Heat a heavy dose of drop coverage, it was already disrespecting their pull-up shooting, but it hit them with another tweak in the second half of Game 5, putting a big man on Butler, rather than Smart. Through five conference finals games, the Heat have scored 102.3 points per 100 possessions in non-garbage time minutes, per CTG, which is to say that Boston has rendered their offense worse than any team's was in the regular season. "I think the mental stress and strain we put on some teams with our defense has worked and carried us through the playoffs at times," Udoka said. We trust him to get the ball in the middle, whether he has a floater, pull-up, or finding guys on the perimeter." The Heat also had a reserve guard step up Wednesday: Gabe Vincent scored 15 points on 6-for-12 shooting, plus two assists and a steal in 23 minutes. This was possible because, for the first time in the series, all of Boston's players were available. Al Horford said he was "unbelievable." Jaylen Brown went with "fantastic" and "essential." White, acquired at the trade deadline from the Spurs in February, is an overqualified bench player, the kind of guy who can swing a game or a series. Jimmy Butler shot 7 for 32 in Games 4 and 5 of the Eastern Conference finals, and the duo of Kyle Lowry and Max Strus shot a combined 1 for 28. Butler is playing through knee inflammation, Lowry is playing through a hamstring injury and Sixth Man of the Year Tyler Herro has not been playing because of a groin injury. He made plays as a roll man and as a point guard.

Jimmy Butler has been their only real “go-to” scorer and with him not looking right due to a lingering knee issue, the Heat’s offense has been dead at times. At just 24-year-old, Williams has quickly turned himself into a high-impact defensive center in the NBA. This piece is another elite-level scoring option next to Butler and while Bam Adebayo could be this type of player, he has proven in these playoffs that his production on offense can be very streaky. Boston has five players in their starting rotation that received All-Defense consideration this season and this is not a coincidence. Perhaps the biggest adjustment Boston has made on defense is not allowing Max Strus and other perimeter players to feel comfortable. Even going back to Game 1, you can see the improvements head coach Ime Udoka and his staff have made.
