Keogh's late, late winner gives Sligo major boost (RTE.ie)

Seamas Keogh struck in the third minute of added time as Sligo Rovers interim boss John Russell got his term underway with a dramatic 2-1 win over Derry ...

The unmarked Keena should have converted Karl O’Sullivan’s cross just past the hour mark as Russell’s men fought their way back into this contest. Both McDonnell and Derry sub Brandon Kavanagh went close early in the second period. Rovers hit the lead on 20 minutes.

Managerless Sligo secure late late winner over Derry (Irish Examiner)

Substitute Seamas Keogh netted a terrific stoppage time winner for managerless Sligo Rovers as they beat Derry City 2-1 at The Showgrounds.

Substitute Seamas Keogh won it for Sligo in the third minute of stoppage time when he smashed home a superb shot from inside the area. Derry levelled in the 44th minute when Jamie McGonigle smartly bagged his 10th of the season after the ball ricocheted into his path from an attempted Sligo clearance. Derry hotshot Jamie McGonigle cancelled out Garry Buckley's opener for the hosts – both of these goals coming in the first-half – as matters looked to be heading for a stalemate until Sligo super sub Seamas Keogh delivered a goal for Sligo's first victory since April 23.

Pat’s custodian Joseph Anang – currently on loan from West Ham United – also produced a number of fine saves as the Gypsies looked to force their way back into contention. Boyd dived but failed to meet Farrell’s cross with UCD right-back Michael Gallagher albeit in close attention. The former Finn Harps man had the match ball in his sights on the resumption and while Tyreke Wilson blocked his path to goal on 54 minutes, his third of the evening arrived just inside the final-quarter. Dundalk captain Pat Hoban fired just past the post on 19 minutes but Harps really should have taken the lead just afterwards when Eric McWoods whipped in a cross from the right and Yoyo Madhy came charging in but failed to get on the end of it inside the six-yard box. Dundalk enjoyed plenty of possession early, but it was Harps who produced the first real chance of note when following a free-kick from Regan Donelon, the ball fell into the path of Jesse Devers in a dangerous position, but he was unable to get the telling connection required. A Daniel Kelly goal early in the second half paved the way for third-placed Dundalk to chalk up their fifth win in six games and close the gap on both Derry City and Shamrock Rovers after their defeats against Sligo Rovers and Drogheda United respectively.

Patching stepped up to take the free-kick but McGinty did well to palm away his effort at his near post with little under 10 minutes to go. His shot on the turn had McGinty beaten but it bounced agonisingly wide of the net. As Thomson attempted to round Ed McGinty who advanced from his line, the Sligo stopper managed to smother the ball at his feet. The striker crossed dangerously into the Derry penalty area but Paddy Kirk miscued his first time effort and screwed it wide on three minutes. McGonigle took a touch before his eventual shot was saved by McGinty. Brandon Kavanagh and Matty Smith both dropped to the bench.

Derry City sunk by late Sligo Rovers winner (Derry Daily)

Derry City missed the chance to close the gap at the top of the SSE Airtricty League Premier Division table as Sligo Rovers snatched a 2-1 home win.

In added-on time, Keogh went on a mesmerising run only to be thwarted by Maher but did have the final say when he picked up the ball on the edge of the area and fired into the roof of the Derry net. Having been beaten at the Brandywell by Dundalk on Friday night, Derry were hoping to return to winning ways against a Sligo side that had parted company with manager Liam Buckley over the weekend but instead the Candystripes have now failed to record a victory in seven of their last nine games as well as being winless in five matches. It was the third defeat in a row for the Candystripes who had hoped to get back to winning ways with their trip to Sligo.
