Date and time: 22 May 2022, 10:00 PM CET Venue: Camp Nou Competition: La Liga Referee: Jose Luis Munuera Montero. Overview. A topsy turvy 2021/22 season ...

With key players back in the side, expect Xavi’s men to make a statement in their final game of the season. Barcelona will need to be at their absolute best if they want any chance of penetrating Albiol’s guard. He will be placed alongside the experienced Raul Albiol in central defence. Xavi had to call on Clement Lenglet and Oscar Mingueza to assume duties at centre-back in the last matchday. Marc-Andre ter Stegen has maintained 11 clean sheets in 34 league starts this season and will look to improve that figure. Yet, The Yellow Submarine are no pushovers and will look to steal three points from Xavi’s side.

Barcelona's 2021-22 has come to an end on a bit of depressing note thanks to a 2-0 loss to Villarreal at Camp Nou in the season finale on Sunday night.

Neither team really went for it and just ran out the clock the dying moments, and the final whistle came to end Barça’s season in depressing fashion. Barcelona 0-2 Villarreal: Player ratings (90min)

Match report and player ratings from Barcelona's La Liga meeting with Villarreal.

Villarreal boss Unai Emery had lost all 13 of his previous managerial visits to Camp Nou in a horror track record stretching back a decade and a half. SUB: Riqui Puig (71' for Gavi) - 4/10 - Overcomplicated his play as he tried to force the breakthrough with every touch. SUB: Ousmane Dembele (57' for Traore) - 5/10 - Flitted in and out of the contest with limited influence ushered out wide. By the cusp of half-time, Parejo had emphatically found his range. LB: Jordi Alba - 5/10 - A recurring presence in the final third, Alba was often in the right place without quite finding the right pass to pick. Predictably dominating possession but pressing all over the pitch to win it back sharply.

Villarreal stun Barcelona to secure European football for next season (Eurosport.com)

Goals from Alfonso Pedraza and Moi Gomez saw Villarreal secure their qualification for next season's Europa Conference League with a 7th place finish in La Liga ...

Alves initially goes for a long-range strike from outside the box, which is dealt with unconvincingly by Rulli. Fati, who was in an offside position, goes in for the rebound, but Albiol clears it off the line. However, inexplicably, he hooks the ball clear without any thought, and it lands right at the feet of Moi Gomez in the box, and the Villarreal man does the rest! This is also Villarreal's first league win over Barcelona since 2008, a run spanning sixteen long years, but that hoodoo is finally behind the Yellow Submarine, as they can look forward to new challenges next season. Despite an underwhelming season in La Liga, which has seen Villarreal record eleven defeats - including to already relegated Alaves and Levante respectively, Unai Emery's side end the campaign on a hugely positive note. Despite only having four shots all game, the away side deserved their win. Villarreal needed Athletic not to win away at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan against Sevilla to guarantee themselves European football for next season.

Aitor Karanka’s Granada side were relegated after a goalless draw at home to Espanyol, as both Cádiz and Real Mallorca won their respective games to stay up. Rodrigo De Paul put the visitors in front with a fine long-range effort, before Ángel Correa made sure of victory. They needed to win at Camp Nou to guarantee qualification, but second-placed Barça side had nothing left to play for and put up little fight.

Barcelona vs. Villarreal - Football Match Report - May 22, 2022 - ESPN (ESPN.co.uk)

Xavi Hernandez's team had already locked up second place in the Spain behind runaway champions Real Madrid and were undone against Villarreal goals from Alfonso ...

Villarreal doubled the lead 10 minutes after the restart -- Gomez smashing home of the centre of the area after a giveaway by Adama Traore -- and went on to keep Barca off the scoresheet for the rest of the match. After reaching the Champions League semifinals this season, knocking out former champions Juventus and Bayern Munich on the way, Emery's side entered the final week of the season in danger of missing out on European competition completely. Barcelona slumped to a lacklustre 2-0 defeat to Villarreal on Sunday at Camp Nou in their final match of the 2021-22 season, with Unai Emery's side securing a spot in the Europa Conference League off the back of the victory.
