Dublin exit hurling championship on score difference after defeat to ... (Independent.ie)

GALWAY eased their way into the Leinster final but Dublin crashed out of the championship after a goalless and lacklustre encounter at Pearse Stadium.

It wasn’t a particularly impressive performance, but they did enough to secure the victory which puts them into a Leinster final against Kilkenny. But Dublin are out of the championship. There were ten frees – five each - in the first 14 minutes, which meant there was no flow to the play. Andrew Dunphy took over from Ronan Hayes at full forward for Dublin while Galway lined out as selected and though they won the toss, they opted to play against the wind. Dublin finished level on points with Kilkenny and Wexford, but their inferior scoring difference meant that that they exited the All-Ireland series. But team boss Henry Shefflin will be demanding a lot more from his charges against his native county in the provincial final. Even in modern times, Dublin have been Galway's bogey team, winning four of their eight encounters with one draw since 2011.

Leinster Hurling - Kilkenny v Wexford - Preview, Stats and ...

Kilkenny and Wexford have met 15 times in the championship since Brian Cody took over as Cats’ boss in late 1998. They meet for a second successive year, with Kilkenny having won an epic Leinster semi-final by eight points after extra-time last year. A Kilkenny win would take them into the Leinster final.

Wexford wonder-sub proves that nothing beats being there with a ... (SportsJOE.ie)

Kilkenny heads were dropping, Wexicans everywhere were going mental and, if you stopped to look around the ground just then - on the stroke of injury-time, ...

A goal really have killed Wexford at that stage but again, with their lives on the line, Wexford summoned the spirit they've spent a season looking for. In fact, their only answer was Richie Reid lorrying high and hopeless balls that Matthew O'Hanlon, at this stage of his inter-county career, must have believed to be a thing of the past. The second half started with an argy-bargy filled whirlwind of digs and dunts and tussles - Adrian Mullen ripped into his college mate Rory O'Connor with a shoulder not long before Paddy Deegan and Liam Óg McGovern got stuck in to it. Wally is always good for one and his point, just after the break, looked like it might be a momentum shifter. They say that, no matter how badly things are going, the best players will block it out regardless. Nothing like the old rival to resuscitate and, while they took their time, they eventually shook the thing up. They did everything to carry their team over the line and that's why, in front of us, Wexford supporters throwing programmes into the sky in celebration. Mossy, to be fair to him, has been flying it recently and after being set up by Cian Kenny, he never looked like missing that early goal chance. Because having scourged Kilkenny with one of those virtuoso performances he usually saves for them, Lee Chin had hurled up a storm in front of them. Like he often does. To their credit, they'll travel in numbers regardless and, like few others, they'll shout even when they have little to shout about but, for the first time in this championship and for the first time in quite a while, the people of Wexford had every reason to shout tonight. At the same time, there were Kilkenny lads calling Fergal Horgan a Tipperary so and so and they were, quick as flashes, comforting themselves in the fact that they've a Leinster final to prepare for and Wexford don't. But still, even as Leinster finalists, they'll be a small bit worried tonight.

Wexford advance to All-Ireland series after stunning upset over ... (Independent.ie)

Wexford started off well, scoring the first two points, the opening score from Jack O’Connor coming around 20 seconds in, but Kilkenny settled and Mossy Keoghan picked up where he left off in Parnell a week earlier by scoring a goal in the eighth minute. They marched off the field with fire in their bellies at the interval, having trailed by five points at one stage, picking off points out the field when the options closer to goal were closed off with typically stubborn and fierce Kilkenny defending. In the middle of the field Diarmuid O’Keeffe landed two massive scores in the first half, Wexford leading 1-11 to 1-8 at half time. Lee Chin scored 0-9, seven of those frees, and his second from play came late in the match when Wexford seemed to hit a new gear, a tremendous catch over Tommy Walsh before he shot between the posts. Kilkenny didn’t surrender easily but were not able to repeat the same level of hurling they served up in Parnell Park a week earlier. All the form was with Kilkenny but in these situations Wexford can always hope to draw on their rich history of producing special performances against their old provincial rivals.

Wexford stay alive in Championship with historic win over Kilkenny ... (Irish Mirror)

Wexford are still alive and kicking after a stunning victory at Nowlan Park - but it's Kilkenny who go on to the Leinster final.

Wexford started the second half against the breeze, with Chin and McDonald inside, and Reid sitting in front of them sweeping. Wexford continually looked to clear space in front of Rory O’Connor and hit him with puck-outs and long ball, and the tactic worked well. The goal they badly needed arrived on 34 minutes when a long Wexford puck-out slipped through the Kilkenny defence and Oisin Foley sped clear to fire to the net. Wexford were looking for a response following last weekend’s surprise draw with Westmeath in Mullingar, and a run of poor results going back to the League semi-final, and they certainly got it on a tense evening in Kilkenny City. Going into the game Wexford knew that a win would all but guarantee a top three spot and survival in the All-Ireland series. Wexford played some clever and controlled hurling in the final 15 minutes, working the ball well, and Dywer’s score in particular was a peach of an effort as he weaved his way through the heart of the Kilkenny defence.

Update: Wexford boss Darragh Egan lauds the composure of his ... (Irish Examiner)

Brian Cody's Kilkenny still take second spot in the group phase, so will play Galway in the Leinster final on June 4 at Croke Park.

We need loads of lads putting up their hand over the next few weeks." "We went in as favourites in Mullingar last week as well," he quipped. "I suppose a lot of lads starting out this year would have felt we didn't give them enough action. With their season on the line, Wexford moved up a gear and came roaring into the contest, outscoring the Cats by 1-9 to 0-4 between the 10th minute and half-time and reeling off five points in a row at one stage. In what amounted to a tense arm wrestle at times, the sides were level for the sixth time in the game at 1-16 apiece with nine minutes of normal time remaining. We just need to be ready for that." From there, Wexford reeled off points from substitutes Mikie Dwyer, Connal Flood and Cathal Dunbar, along with Chin and Simon Donohoe, to secure their second win of the campaign and third spot in the table. Kilkenny twice got back to level terms in the following 15 minutes or so but Wexford, crucially, never fell behind and the visitors saved a strong kick for the finale, registering six points to Kilkenny's two in the closing minutes to seal a landmark win. Chin helped himself to nine points in total and was among a dozen different Wexford players to get on the scoresheet in a thrilling final round encounter. They are really vital panel members. The sides were level for the sixth time at 1-16 apiece late on in Kilkenny city when Wexford took off, reeling off six of the game's last eight points to win with some to spare. Asked if it was a victory for Wexford's composure, Tipperary man Egan nodded and pointed to the performances of his substitutes in particular with Connal Flood, Mikie Dwyer and Cathal Dunbar all pointing during that late blitz.
