Meteorologists said the stormy weather is likely to continue in the coming days. The warm weather is being caused by a mass of hot, dry air carrying dust coming from northern Africa. "Some 40 people were injured in the storm, at least 10 of them seriously," city police said in a statement. A church steeple in the town was toppled. "Sheeting and insulation were blown kilometres (miles) away. German authorities said 10 of those hurt were seriously injured.

Heavy rainfall and hail was seen across western and central Germany on Friday, and one man is reported to have died in the 81mph storms elsewhere.

Paderborn police said 43 people were injured in the storm that hit the city. Authorities in Bavaria said 14 people were injured on Friday when the wooden hut they were trying to shelter in collapsed during a storm at Lake Brombach, south of Nuremberg. Among the injured were several children and a 37-year-old woman, who was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries. Heavy storm damage was also reported in the nearby town of Lippstadt. A church steeple in the town was toppled and the German news agency dpa reported that more than 100 people were temporarily trapped in a local open-air pool after fallen trees blocked the exit.

"A dangerous situation is expected that may feature a convective windstorm with long swaths of severe to extremely severe wind gusts and several supercells with large hail and tornadoes with the highest threat over central parts of Germany," Estofex said.
