Zebre, with just one win all season, suggested initially they were in Galway to throw it around, but while Carlo Canna got them off the mark with a fifth minute penalty after a couple of good try chances were butchered, they lacked the strength and class to mount a serious challenge. Connacht struggled to really stamp their superiority as they ended the inaugural URC campaign with nine win and nine losses, a 50% return which left them well short of Champions Cup qualification or a place in the quarter-finals Connacht dominated the opening but, typical of the inconsistency shown all season, they only led 17-8 at the break having coughed up a try in the final play of the opening period. A frustrating season for Connacht ended with a typically indifferent display where they dominated Zebre for long periods but only just managed to avoid an embarrassing defeat as the Italians came with a late surge.

Nocera made a big impact after replacing Eduardo Bello in the Zebre front-row and he powered over the Connacht line to offer his troops renewed hope with 13 minutes remaining. In the direct aftermath of this score, scrum-half Colm Reilly was the first Connacht player to be introduced off the bench. While Carty was wide of the mark off a tricky conversion attempt on the left-wing, Connacht had their tails up and subsequently doubled their lead in the 17th-minute. Carty finally opened his account from his third effort at goal and while there was still a lot of rugby left to play, Connacht already looked set for a comfortable victory. Connacht rode this late storm to make it nine wins from 18 in the inaugural URC, but it was a far from vintage display overall by Andy Friend’s charges. Along with replacements Ultan Dillane, Abraham Papali’I and Sammy Arnold, Masterson was making his final appearance for Connacht, but the visitors did their utmost to spoil the party for this quartet.

A Gavin Thornbury lineout take and drive was finished by flanker Eoghan Masterson, the centurion celebrating his final match in a Connacht jersey, along with Ultan Dillane. Connacht had posted the first of their four tries after seven minutes in answer to Zebre’s fourth-minute penalty.

Dillane tackles 'phenomenal memories' after swansong (RTE.ie)

Ultan Dillane says he is leaving Connacht with "phenomenal memories" as his decade-long association with the province came to an end.

But I'll surely miss the place." It's just been a lifetime of memories made in what feels like such a short time because it's just flown with the fun we've had here. "It's my home.
