Spiller died in 1988 at the age of 75. Spiller didn't take up the game until he was in his 30s but quickly became one of the best golfers in the region. Spiller joined Rhodes's efforts to overturn the clause, which finally fell in 1961 after lawsuits and continued setbacks for the movement.
