By making Luka Doncic work on both ends of the floor, Andrew Wiggins and the Warriors shut down the Mavs in the series opener.
That’s a serious issue for a team that’s more inclined to pick-and-pop and puts a premium on shooting, which the Mavericks failed spectacularly at in Game 1. When we go back and look at the open shots we had, we got a lot of them. The Warriors, arguably, weren’t even at their finest with Curry and Thompson going 1-for-10 early in the game and Poole being largely invisible until the second half. The only front-line player with rim tendencies is Dwight Powell and he’s not a volume shooter — the Mavs don’t even call his number. That said, Curry still demands respect from the defense and carries the same level of confidence. Their personnel is built to orbit Doncic and spread the floor. Two years ago, Thompson would have been the one assigned to Doncic as he was one of the league’s finest in that regard then. He stayed on the attack offensively and eventually took more shots than Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson or Jordan Poole. That’s something Doncic and the Mavs didn’t expect, and it was done for a reason, to force Doncic’s workload. “The best players all have that knack for turning a bad game into something better,” Kerr said. The Mavericks knew this, and thought it was safer for Doncic to match against Wiggins instead of Klay Thompson or Jordan Poole … except Wiggins torched that strategy, and Doncic, right from the tip. After all, this is the NBA’s all-time 3-point king and a lifetime 90% free-throw shooter. Golden State knew it didn’t invent the defense needed to slow a superstar.

And that’s how the highlight of the night came to be. And Looney, seeing Curry coming, set a hard screen that knocked the pursuing Finney-Smith out of the play, giving Curry room to catch, turn and shoot. After throwing the pass, Curry immediately turned and darted toward the arc. Thompson caught a rhythm after a fast-break layup, exploding for 11 points in the period. And Curry got on one of those rolls where it seems he can do no wrong—even when it sort of looks like he’s about to do something wrong. It wasn’t initially a great night for the Warriors’ stars either. This is the deepest the Mavericks have been in the postseason since 2011, the year they won the title. But that’s just the thing with these Warriors over the last eight years: It’s often hard to tell where the line is between talent, luck and flat-out magic. “They’ve been through the bad and the good. … So that was an example of those guys just knowing each other well, and Draymond knowing exactly what Steph was going to do.” SAN FRANCISCO – Steph Curry was trapped in the corner, all escape routes and passing lanes cut off, leaving few options, none of them great. “So there’s a lot of value in that.

Warriors guard Klay Thompson scored 11 points in the quarter. Warriors center Kevon Looney and forwards Draymond Green and Otto Porter Jr. chipped in 10 points apiece. The Warriors went on a 12-2 run early in the third to add some cushion to their advantage. The lead switched hands several times throughout the first quarter. They still trailed 54-45 at the break. The Mavericks made just 36% of their shots.

“I didn’t have a field goal in the first half but that will never discourage me,” Thompson said. “We would like to play our pace but the Warriors have a unique pace, they’re going to get out and put a lot of pressure on your defense in transition,” Kidd said. “We have to be cautious of that. I missed being out there with the guys,” Kerr said. “It is how we play,” Curry said. “Dončić is as difficult a cover as there is in this league. “They did a great job.” Jalen Brunson scored 14 points but missed all five of his threes for the surprising Mavs, who stunned the top-seeded Suns in a 123-90 thumping in Game 7 on Sunday in Phoenix. Any great player in the league you’re trying to limit the damage that they do.” Curry, last season’s scoring champ, missed his initial five three-point tries before connecting with 50 seconds left in the first half. “They went box-and-one, they went zone. “I thought Wiggs was fantastic,” coach Steve Kerr said. “A great job. Dončić scored 20 points but shot just 6 for 18 and 3 of 10 from deep.

He finished with 10 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal. While it looked like he was really flexing at Maxi Kleber, the guy who fouled him, that photo had NBA fans going nuts. While Steph Curry led all scores with 21 points, Draymond Green had a solid game for the Warriors by doing all of the little things that he has been so good at doing over the years.

Golden State sent a clear message to Dallas in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals: We're not the Suns.
Doncic will surely settle in as the series continues, and Mavericks Coach Jason Kidd has pushed the right buttons to this point of the postseason. The Mavericks shot 11-for-48 on three-pointers for the night, connecting on just 3-for-19 in the first quarter. Golden State assigned Andrew Wiggins to be Doncic’s primary defender, applying full-court pressure and deploying the occasional zone defense in hopes of tiring him out and keeping him off balance. But Golden State has a long track record of getting off on the right foot, winning 13 consecutive series openers at home and accumulating a remarkable 21-2 record in Game 1s since 2015. This brand of dual dependence — committing so thoroughly to high-variance outside shooting while relying so heavily on a solo star — leaves the Mavericks prone to extraordinary victories and unsightly defeats. Little had gone as planned, though the Dallas Mavericks guard was careful to betray no sign of pain or weakness in defeat.
The Mavericks knew they would have to scratch and claw to upset the Golden State Warriors in Game 1, but it was Doncic who was left with a battle scar.
"Looking ahead to Game 2, of course," Doncic said. It was a poor performance on both ends by Doncic's lofty standards, and he'll look to bounce back strong in Game 2, in which Dallas is 6.5-point underdogs. After scoring 18 points in the first half, Doncic was held to just two points in the entire second half. We've just got to get ready for Game 2 now." As we've talked in the Playoffs, the team that's physical tends to find a way to win. However it was Mavs star Luka Doncic who was literally scratched and clawed, and the Warriors ran away with a 112-87 win and a 1-0 series lead.

Jessie Carter writes: "The Warriors are on the roll. It writes: "We have the Mavericks (+6.5) as our best bet in this game after analyzing all of the key trends and stats for this matchup. Dorian Finney-Smith can't be scoring over 20 points in one game and then be taking just six shots in another game for five points on the night. More: Dallas Mavericks vs. More: Dallas Mavericks vs.
In the Western Conference finals, that means Luka Doncic. Dealing with the young phenom, who has been unstoppable at times in the playoffs, will be the biggest ...
Most notably, they forced Doncic into back-to-back turnovers during their big 10-0 run that broke the game open in the third quarter. "If we want to take care of business on Friday we'll need a similar effort." This was also the first time in his postseason career that he's had more turnovers than made field goals. They mixed up their looks -- Kerr even broke out the box-and-one at times -- went under screens, kept Doncic in front off the dribble, and were always ready with help when necessary. That's what the Warriors were able to do in Game 1. Time and again he would meet Doncic at halfcourt or even in the backcourt, forcing him to turn his back and start the offense well into the shot clock. But with no shortage of scoring options on this Warriors team, he's had to adjust his approach since arriving in the Bay Area. He's become a much better defender and is often tasked with guarding the opponents' best player. Doncic is no stranger to this approach, but it's still difficult to deal with someone as big, strong and athletic as Wiggins pressuring you all night long. While it's much easier said than done, your best chance for success against Doncic is if you can keep him on the perimeter shooting jumpers. Wiggs is just a huge part of our defense and our team. So far, he appears up to the challenge. Luka Doncic entered the Western Conference finals on top of the world.
Spencer Dinwiddie isn't surprised at how well the Warriors played and believes that the Mavericks' unity can help carry them to a bounce-back win.
"Like I said, they've been the best team in the league since probably 2015, like combined record or whatever. The Mavericks are battle-tested as well, and their second-half surge in the regular season fueled an unlikely run deep into the playoffs where they've already knocked off the team with the best record in the NBA. "Like I said, I think it's tough to come in on the road and beat the Warriors any time, especially in the Western Conference finals after they've had a little bit of rest, plus we missed shots. "I don't think shell-shocked is the right adjective," Dinwiddie added. To Dinwiddie, that's not surprising one bit given what the Warriors have done in recent years. Will they do so again in the Western Conference finals against the Warriors?
Ahead of their game against the Dallas Mavericks, it's time to release our Golden State Warriors Game 2 predictions.
Expect Golden State to have to readjust a lot on defense Friday night, and give up a lot of points in the first half of the contest. Unfortunately for Dubs fans, a Warriors loss is brewing in San Francisco, courtesy of the Mavs. The Warriors tend to get extremely confident when they pull off huge wins similar to that of Game 1. In Game 1, the Warriors did a fantastic job on defense to complement their highly productive offense. He picked up the slack in the second half with 15 points, finishing the game with 7-13 from the field and 1-4 from three. The guard had zero points in the first half after four attempts from the field. The road to the third round hasn’t been easy for either team, making this such a huge matchup.
Here's a look at three thoughts from Golden State's dominant win over Dallas in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals.
