Andy Myler says UCD will relish 'free shot' at Shamrock Rovers (Irish Mirror)

UCD host Shamrock Rovers tonight (7.45pm) in a game brought forward because of a college function tomorrow.

“ Ahead of tonight’s Belfield clash, he said: “It was good to get the monkey off the back. “It’s a massive challenge. “In recent weeks we actually started scoring more goals and creating more chances. The ones against the teams around us will ultimately decide who ends up where. “We’re not expected to win it and in some ways, games like these are a bit of a free shot but we also have to be careful as there are two ways a free shot can go.

Bradley calls for 'severe' punishments for match fixing (RTE.ie)

Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley has urged "severe punishments" for any individual involved in match fixing.

"He just got a bang on his knee which was sore but the doctor's happy with it, the physio's happy and Jack is happy. But we'll all rally around him and we'll do the very best for him here at the club. "Those games aren't going to define the season for us. "The standard of football is really good, crowds are up and there is going to be investment in stadiums over the next few years. "This is why the team are champions the last two years. "We're more disappointed for him than we are for ourselves because he was likely to move possibly to the UK over the next couple of months.

Shamrock Rovers won 3-0 at bottom side UCD to go seven points clear at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division.

His injury may have been picked up in the incident and no risk was taken. There was no need to risk further damage. The vision was superb and the execution perfectly weighted for Danny Mandroiu to prod home the second in the middle of the box.

Byrne and Mandroiu were both yellow-carded for fouls; an unlikely duo to be punished for that reason. The real stress for the away bench came when Byrne went down off the ball, clutching his right leg. Andy Myler had started with three central defenders and two wing-backs which made it closer to a back five. Against inferior opposition, his quality stands out a mile, the ability to slip into space and pick out a pass before the other team can react. Jack Byrne is a major assistance to Bradley’s charges in games of this nature. Three of their four meetings with Longford Town, the Premier Division’s worst team, were settled by injury-time Rovers efforts.

UCD 0 SHAMROCK ROVERS 3DANNY MANDROIU made it six goals in six games - as Shamrock Rovers moved seven points clear with a routine win over bottom side.

From almost the same spot as Byrne created Cotter’s goal, Gaffney did the same for Mandroiu, with a filthy pass off the outside of his right foot. But anything Byrne could do, Rory Gaffney was out to show he could do as well with a brilliant pass for Mandroiu to double the Hoops advantage on 17 minutes. Picking up the ball on the left and 30-yards from goal, he spotted Cotter had a yard on his marker John Ryan, and looped a cross to the far post.

It is back-to-back away games for the Hoops as they travel to eighth-placed Drogheda United on Monday evening at Head In The Game Park. The only downside of the first half for the Hoops was an enforced substitution after Jack Byrne picked up a knock. They might have been fearing another pasting but the pedestrian pace of the second period kept the score down. The Hoops opened the scoring in the fifth minute after Jack Byrne dropped into the six position and clipped a beautiful diagonal ball to Cotter who made no mistake with a close-range header. Jack Byrne went down off the ball and was replaced on 38 minutes but that didn’t knock Rovers out of their stride and substitute Aaron Greene played a key role in the third goal, winning the ball high and after combining with Dylan Watts he laid the ball to Gaffney to tap home.

Not that Rovers will stress over it. The influx of substitutions only fuelled that feeling, with Rovers making three at the break because they could and UCD copying them soon after because they should. And it was just that when the champions doubled their lead in the 17th minute with Mandroiu sliding in to finish an outrageous outside-of-the-boot ball from Gaffney. The Ireland international was the closest person to Kerrigan on the halfway line, but suddenly stopped playing and sat down. Not when Rovers owned the ball and were pulling the home side all over the pitch with tremendous ease. By that time, Barry Cotter and Mandroiu had already put Rovers in a commanding and early lead before Rory Gaffney sealed the deal before the break.

STEPHEN BRADLEY has revealed the day Shamrock Rovers had one hand on the 2020 league title was also the time he decided he had to sign Danny Mandroiu.

“Then when you see him up close, his athletic ability is really high level. “We had a good chat about him after the game and that was the point that we decided we wanted to try and get him. But Bradley admitted that it was his 24-minute cameo against Rovers that September - a game the Hoops won 1-0 to go five points clear on their way to the title - that convinced him to sign the Dubliner.
