Galway native Nicola Coughlan is quickly becoming a household name globally, but lest we forget where it all began, with wee Clare Devlin in Derry Girls.
The show came full circle this week, with many exciting cameo’s leaving fans on the edge of their seat and viewers struggling to let go of this iconic show. Many famous faces flooded to Nicola’s comments to show their support, while fans of the show were also quick to share the love. As we woefully bid farewell to the hit series this week, it seems the cast feel the same, with Nicola posting a tearful goodbye to the character that started it all.
Blending all the petty growing pains of adolescence with the real and serious backdrop of The Troubles - it can only be the Derry Girls.
But despite the name, a ceasefire is the start of something, not the end. And knowing that this season involves an episode flashing back to 1977 and the height of The Troubles, you could be forgiven for thinking that they’re actively trying to change their mind as they go. This is probably why I’m being slightly venomous about one of the main cogs pissing off to warmer climes in favour of the show that made her an international star. Likewise, the special – which I am counting as part of this season, if they don’t like it they shouldn’t have put it out the day after the last episode – is clearly taking its cues from the back end of the second season, using an important day of the peace process to have the background history suddenly come forward into the characters’ lives in a very big way. Thankfully, the equally cantankerous Grandpa Joe has lost none of the old fire – and, in contrast to the rest of the cast, arguably finds more depth here than before. Being a reasonable if disdainful authority figure, the thing that made her great, has given way to conspicuous and unconvincing ‘coolness’ as, it seems, the writers also fall under the spell and start liking her a bit too much.

That's not the only change to expect, as Coughlan let it slip that season three is "gonna be a lot different." At the end of season one, Penelope was revealed to be Lady Whistledown herself. Season 3 is going to be about Penelope and Colin’s impossible love. Lady Whistledown stans, gather around so we can talk about the very exciting news on what we can expect when we get some more Bridgerton.
"We think that Penelope is beautiful, and I don’t think it’s really a part of her story. "I think of Colin and Pen as being characters who bring a lot of comedy to the show. Colin, as a third son who's kind of been behind the scenes a little bit, and Penelope as Lady Whistledown, living this dual identity and in her public face, really living on the wall. With that said, fans want to know what to expect from Colin and Penelope's story. It really felt like the perfect moment to tee it up." This is the first time I am saying it here."
