Amy Broadhurst has beaten Algeria's Imane Khelif to win the 60-63kg gold medal at the Women's World Boxing Championships in Istanbul.
Panguane, a southpaw was forced to chase O’Rourke who boxed primarily of the back foot but in a close first round she delivered the clearer shots. All but the Algerian judge agreed, and she secured a famous win on a majority 4-1 verdict. Panguane switched tactics slightly focussing on body shots in the second. Only a catastrophic failure could now deprive Broadhurst of the gold. First up was Broadhurst who is probably better suited to the lightweight division. But she did underline her potential at the European U-22 championships earlier this year when she won the gold medal.

Dundalk's Amy Broadhurst has become the latest Irish World Champion having convincingly beaten her Algerian opponent, Imane Khelif, in the 60-63 KG Light .
But now she can finally call her herself World Champion. Could a stint at the Olympics in 2024 be next for this talented boxer? Such was her command in this round, not only did she sway all five judges but convinced two of them to give her a 10-8 score, as Khelif was so far out of the contest. Yet it was Broadhurst who came out the more aggressive fighter, continuing to pick off her opponent. This never came which meant Ireland had its newest boxing sensation as Broadhurst became the third female Boxing World champion Ireland has ever produced. The second round was when we began to see the biggest difference between the pair, ring awareness and a good boxing brain. However the success didn’t last long, Broadhurst managing to sprint under her jabs and get in close, where she could pick Khelif off with ease.

The training camp in Assisi in Italy was fantastic and we were well rested and prepared for the championship. The judges favoured the Mozambique fighter in the second which came as a surprise and set up a tense final round where O'Rourke suddenly had a point to prove. The chance to collect two gold medals in the space of half an hour had presented itself following Broadhurst's heroics, and O'Rourke duly obliged as she emerged with aggression to take the fight to Panguana from the outset. By the final round, Broadhurst had the buoyancy of a comprehensive lead from the judges and she saw out the remainder of the bout in a controlled and disciplined fashion to claim gold on a 5-0 scoreline from the judges.

But an eye-catching right-left combination sent Khelif backwards later in the round, setting up a strong finish to hammer home Broadhurst's dominance. O’Rourke appeared to score at ease on the move, and while she clearly had the better of the round, Panguane's aggressive approach appeared to please a couple of the judges with the round split 3:2 in O’Rourke’s favour. Another 3:2 result in favour of O’Rourke followed, however, the judge from Algeria judge scored the round 10:8 to Panguane, which left things in the balance heading into the final round.
Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games boxer Broadhurst excelled at the Women's World Boxing Championships.
Congrats champ @amybroadhurst12 welcome to the club." Broadhurst follows in the footsteps of Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington to become Ireland's third female boxer to win the World Championships. Michael Conlan has heaped praise on Any Broadhurst after she won gold at the Women's World Boxing Championships.
Broadhurst became the first Irish women's world champion since Kellie Harrington, who won gold in New Delhi in 2018.
O’Rourke started the final round fast, winging in punches from distance and then landing the cleaner shots as things got wild in close. O’Rourke looked a bit wild at times, but she was gaining in confidence and by the end of the second round seemed happy to stand and trade with the African boxer, who competed at last year’s Olympics in Tokyo. The only other Irish gold medallist was Katie Taylor, who won five times between 2006 and 2014.
The Dundalk and Roscommon women join only Katie Taylor, Michael Conlan and Kellie Harrington as World Championship gold medal winners.
Forevermore, this country’s short list of boxing World Championship gold medal winners and, indeed, its far broader pantheon of sporting greats, will contain the names Amy Broadhurst and Lisa O’Rourke. In a close first round, she deliberately ceded ground as she attempted to work out her aggressive Mozambican opponent, but she still managed to routinely beat Panguane to the punch. Long story short: the Castlerea woman needed to pinch one of those two tied cards to be crowned world champion. Three of the five judges saw it as such, with Broadhurst edging ahead 3-2 as they went into the second. It was harsh on the North African who, while second best, had hardly been run ragged over the three minutes. The Dundalk woman wasn’t long doing her calculations and closing the gap, though.
With Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington leading the way with gold medal wins at the 2012 and 2020 Olympics respecitvely, Broadhurst and O'Rourke demonstrated ...
She never looks in the least fazed and is obviously enjoying the experience at her debut World championships. Not even Katie Taylor won a medal at her first World championships in 2005. Harrington has said she will retire after Paris, so Broadhurst could bide her time and wait for the Los Angeles Games – she will only be 31 when they roll around. Up until a few days ago Lisa O’Rourke was better known in boxing as Aoife O’Rourke’s baby sister. In 2012 Broadhurst, then aged 15, won a European schoolgirls title. Alternatively, she could pursue a career in professional boxing following in the footsteps of her hero Katie Taylor. For the moment she can celebrate making the podium at the World championships at the fifth time of asking. She has had a remarkable 2022 winning the European U-22 title in the light middleweight division before achieving even more success at the World championships in Istanbul. She bounced back to win a bronze medal in the lightweight division at the 2019 European championships and won successive gold medals at the 2018 and 2019 European U-22 championships. Her dilemma going forward is there is no category for light welterweights in the programme for the Paris Olympics. If she drops back to lightweight she will face Kellie Harrington and she needs to add at least three kilos to compete at welterweight which is an Olympic weight. She was the victim of a woeful decision in the light welterweight quarter-finals at the 2018 World championships in New Delhi. But she lost out to Kellie Harrington who having been crowned world champion in the lightweight division at the 2018 World champions was in pole position to be Ireland’s representative at 60kg at the Tokyo Olympics. Taylor, who had won the gold medal at the London Olympics months earlier, walked into the hall together with her father Pete. She presented Amy with a book and a cake and afterwards chatted with her.
