The head of the EU executive is pressing forward with her green and digital agenda despite massive upheavals. How well is she doing?
The Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act have given him the digital legislative credentials to tell the world he's taking on some of the hardest challenges, and winning. He’s been a loyal team player who has pulled his weight but in truth he has not led the work on the biggest EU policies on his patch. If you want to hear how successful Thierry Breton has been as a European Commissioner, the best person to ask is probably Thierry Breton. The self-promoting Frenchman entered Brussels with a whirlwind of pre-match interviews, and has barely stopped — annoying other teammates with his tendency to ignore the formation and stray all over the pitch. While a lot of work remains to be done on reviving the multilateral trade arena and getting the EU’s free trade engine running again, the EU’s biggest free trade fans hope Dombrovskis can revive the backlog of trade deals in the coming years. Those rules are expected to make it more difficult for the likes of Google and Facebook to scoop up smaller rivals, as well as clamp down on misinformation and harmful goods circulating online. But to bring the European Parliament on board with the free trade agenda, Dombrovskis is gingerly ramping up the EU’s climate and labor requirements. Since the invasion, he has rallied the team in condemning Putin and urging the EU to go further in its actions against Moscow. It meant that authorities in Rome would have a familiar face to deal with, reducing the chance of friction, and at the same time preventing what was then a highly Euroskeptic government from blaming Brussels for unpalatable policies. From a bureaucratic perspective, the commissioner put the pandemic to good use. For much of the first half of her term, the near anonymous commissioner for energy has seen much of her role sucked into the gravity field of Timmermans’ Green Deal mission. The review of asylum rules she and Schinas put on the table in September 2020 is still stuck. But if the squad was hoping for a lull in the action, they were sorely disappointed.

Emma Straub's new novel, “This Time Tomorrow,” is a love letter to a bygone era on the Upper West Side and a timeless family bond.
Overhearing the sound of her once-again-young father preparing for the day in the adjacent bathroom, she is reminded of all the memories so lost to time that we don’t even know to miss them: “Alice listened to her father brush and rinse and spit and knock his toothbrush against the lip of the sink before settling it back into its glass cup with a jangle as it knocked against hers. What she wants out of time travel is not so much to fix herself, but to unstick her father, who has stalled out romantically and creatively. “This Time Tomorrow”’s characters talk about mass-appeal science fiction as a way of trying to make sense of what has happened to Alice: Is she having a “ Peggy Sue Got Married” experience, but with a horror-film twist? Her father, Leonard, the creator of a blockbuster pop culture phenomenon about time travel (best-selling book, long-running television series), is in his 70s and fading fast. And although her travels through time allow her to reconsider her romantic history, the person whose past she is most eager to set right is her father, a man whose imminent mortality deepens the novel’s ambient nostalgia into something pressing and poignant. In her 2014 novel, “ The Vacationers,” Straub takes the reader on an escapist fantasy with a flawed family that goes on holiday in Mallorca; in “This Time Tomorrow,” the escapist fantasy entails two family members’ recurring reunions in the ’90s, that dumb sweetheart of a decade, when everyone, if they worried at all, was probably worrying about the wrong things.
What goes for moving clocks goes for everything else; physics, chemistry and biology all operate at a slower pace in moving frames of reference.
Because of this asymmetry, Bob's perspective is no longer as valid as Alice's, and he can no longer claim that he is standing still while the universe is moving around him. And he'll be able to tell he's doing it not by looking at the outside universe but by making observations while inside his rocket — for example, the vibrations of the engines and the push of his body against the floor during deceleration. But if Bob were to get in a rocket ship and cruise around the galaxy at near light speed, things would be a bit different. When the clocks returned, they were out of sync with a ground-based clock by exactly the amount predicted by special relativity. Special relativity says that a clock attached to a moving object will tick at a slower rate than one standing still. If we want the laws of physics — which also means the experience of physics — to be the same regardless of your reference frame, perspectives have to shift for observers at different speeds.

Minister for Defence will push for €500 million increase in military spending.
Hundreds of serving and former members of the defence forces attended the ceremony since the British troops marched out of what was then known as Portobello Barracks and were replaced by Irish ones. It recommended the Naval Service should be upgraded to a navy and its establishment strength should be doubled to 2,044. It typically spends a third of what other countries do on defence.
As Payton Harden lay on the warning track in centerfield after crashing into the wall 11 days ago, the Cowboys season was in question.
The Cowboys led the conference in hitting with a .304 average. A week later Harden was back in the lineup and once again leading the McNeese State offense. The redshirt junior is having a huge season after a somewhat slow start. That work led him to be named the SLC Hitter of the Week Monday. Harden would soon leave the game and miss the next two while in concussion protocol. I missed being in the game.”
The 28-year-old captured gold on Olympic debut as part of Team Muirhead.
“Over the years I have played with many fantastic teammates, each one of them unique in their own way. “To turn up at training in the final few months of preparation for the Games on the back of a night shift was a privilege, not a chore.” Muirhead said: “It took a lot of encouragement and persuasion to show Vicky she was one of the best players in the world.
Vicky Wright now plans to focus on her family and her work as a nurse.
Ms Wright said: “I plan to keep my eye in and play some games with friends and who knows… And she said while she was retiring from full-time curling, she hoped “not to be a stranger to the game” – hinting that she could still play competitively. Ms Wright continued: “Last but not least I could not have achieved so much without the support of my family, friends and my fiance Greg, who I will be marrying in the summer.”
For a commuter doing a roundtrip from downtown San Jose to San Francisco, the surging fuel price equals around a $20 round trip. That's a $5 hike for vehicles ...
That’s a $5 hike for vehicles averaging 30 miles per gallon versus January 2022 and almost double the cost from January 2021. California imports over 16% of its oil from Saudi Arabia. It is also a staggering $1.36 increase since the beginning of the year. California has long paid the highest fuel prices in the country, a sting that is particularly felt now as the average price per gallon is $1.50 higher than the national average. Among the reasons for the state’s highest-in-nation status is a 51 cent gas tax – only Pennsylvania levees a higher gas tax – along with environmental fees to fight climate change, and a more costly fuel blend unique to the Golden State that improves air quality. In San Jose, prices are at $6.12, Oakland is seeing $6.13, while San Francisco and Marin counties are tied for most expensive at $6.27, according to AAA. The state average topped $6 for the first time on Tuesday – 30 cents higher than a month ago – as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine combined with surging inflation and increased fuel demand spiked gasoline prices.

Galway and Dublin provide some must-watch TV action this weekend, as the two hurling rivals go head-to-head in the Leinster Championship.

The 20-year nostalgia cycle, climatechange nihilism, and streaming-era content overload, have converged in a tidal wave of tackiness.
As high priestess of bad taste Lana Del Rey sang, “The culture is lit and if this is it, I had a ball.” What’s remarkable about all this is not that it’s happening so much as the absence of any notable mainstream backlash. Perhaps the backlash isn’t coming because there’s so clearly nothing of substance to get up in arms about. Wade, and the threat of environmental apocalypse? Keep your gentle ballads; 100 gecs, a hyperpop act known for its warp-speed genre collages, recently combined hard-rock guitar, pop-punk vocals, and conspicuous Auto-Tune in “ Doritos & Fritos.” The chorus is just the song title repeated with anthemic intensity. Yet what’s remarkable about this particular pendulum swing is that after centuries of wrestling with hierarchies of taste, the cultural stigma that has always come with indulging in bad taste has disappeared. In the 1970s, Pink Flamingos and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls epitomized bad-taste cinema; now they’re in the Criterion Collection. Such evolution is the result of constant, generational negotiations—ones that intensified in the 20th century, as rapid advancements in technology yielded radio, records, movies with sound and TV, which could bring a night at the opera to the masses but more often cranked out cliché-ridden love songs. One component of the current bad-taste aesthetic is nostalgia. Bad taste is, then, a value-neutral style that revels in schlock, camp, and raunch for their own sakes. “And I agree, though it’s curious how often critics’ ‘own enjoyment’ still takes us all down similar paths at once.” Was True Detective really a great show in its first season, for instance, or did critics respond more profoundly than the average person to brooding characters who say things like “Time is a flat circle”? In 1949, a rubric in Life ranked “everyday tastes” from highbrow (Eames furniture, ballet) to lowbrow (“mail order overstuffed chair,” westerns). High-minded critics such as Dwight Macdonald took aim at culture as product, but defenders of popular tastes emerged. In 2022, pop culture is doing the most.
With staff and students from Hermon PS, Mayor Bonnie Adams and township councillors and representatives from the Carlow Mayo Public Library, the event that day ...
I would like to thank the students and teachers for their contributions that will be placed in the capsule for the next opening of the of the renamed Township of Carlow Mayo and Hermon Public School time capsule during the year 2044. The students and teachers at Hermon Public School put in a plethora of letters, photos and mementos like sports cards, coins and masks. I was kind of impressed they were all intrigued by the items, and were taking part and asking questions,” he says. Simpson was given the honour of opening the time capsule and helping Adams retrieve all the items that had been stowed away over a quarter century before. Once the items were revealed, new items from the township, the school and the library were put back into the capsule, to be opened up again in 2044. More items were added and then it was placed in the front foyer of the newly opened municipal office in 1994.
