The Kerry actor is regarded as one of Ireland’s most established screen presences, having appeared in multiple RTÉ productions and in BBC’s The Tudors. The actor died as a result of a short illness at the age of 52 at the weekend.

He graduated from Dublin's Gaiety School of Acting in 1991 and studied an MA in Theatre Practice in Maynooth.

He recently had joined forces with his close pal, Hollywood actor Michael Fassbender, to set up the West End House School of Arts in Killarney. The 52-year-old had an eventful acting career, featuring in 'The Tudors', ' Fair City', 'Acceptable Risk', 'Maru' and 'Cutting Grass'. Donie (Donal) Courtney, from Killarney, graduated from Dublin’s Gaiety School of Acting in 1991 and studied an MA in Theatre Practice in Maynooth.

Fassbender, 45, said: "It was you that introduced me to acting. "A true gentleman of the theatre world. He will be greatly missed." Courtney was wellknown for supporting the arts in both his local Killarney and beyond and has been teaching drama and acting for many years. Describing him as "an extremely proud Killarney man," club chiefs said: "We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Donie Courtney, an incredibly creative and talented actor, writer, producer and director who was so generous in the sharing of his experience and expertise with others."
