How can Liverpool win the Premier League title? Mapping what the ... (Sporting News)

After Man City dropped points against West Ham, this is what Liverpool need to charge back and win the Premier League title.

If Liverpool drop points the rest of the way, the Premier League title is likely out of reach. With Liverpool four points back, the Reds cannot lose either remaining game. Should the Reds win, all eyes will be on City's game against Aston Villa, where a win can clinch the title with victory no matter Liverpool's finish. With Manchester City dropping points against West Ham on Sunday, it has suddenly opened the door for Liverpool in the Premier League title race. City sit three points clear, but the Reds now have a game in hand after City lost at West Ham. It's still an uphill battle for Liverpool in the title race.

Should the title race go all the way to a play-off decider, it will the best first time in the history of top-flight English football that the title has been settled in such a manner. But after the final day matches both sides are level on points AND goal difference, according to Premier League rules: “If clubs still cannot be separated, the team who scored the most goals away from home in the head-to-head matches will get the highest position. If Jurgen Klopp's mentality monsters are to finish the season with a 20th league title, first they will (almost certainly) need to beat Southampton on Tuesday evening to get themselves a point behind City. A defeat at Saints for Liverpool would mean City are champions.

West Ham 2-2 Manchester City: Riyad Mahrez misses late penalty ... (Eurosport.co.uk)

Manchester City came back from two-down to earn a point at West Ham, but Riyad Mahrez missed a chance to win the game from the penalty spot late on.

There was no need for Coufal to launch a diving header at a free kick heading easily into Fabianski's arms and left the keeper with no chance. From a youngster at Hereford, to a strong Championship player at Hull, there were few who saw him making the leap to be one of the most dangerous forwards in the Premier League but that is exactly what he is now. It was a difficult free kick to defend as Mahrez swung the set piece behind the defence which curled away from Fabianski, but there would have been little danger to the Hammers goal if Coufal had not decided to launch himself diagonally backwards where any touch was unlikely to yield a positive result. He is the perfect compliment to the horde of English attacking players who prefer the ball to feet rather than running onto through-balls and should be rewarded with appearances in Gareth Southgate's side over the next few months. City are now four points clear of Liverpool who have two games remaining and are seven goals worse off in terms of goal difference. On both occasions Oleksandr Zinchenko was culpable for not tracking Bowen's diagonal runs behind the defence from the right flank.

Despite predicting a "twist" in the title race tale, Neville heaped praise on City and credited them with making a tricky trip to Molineux look very easy. This means Liverpool are four points behind ahead of their trip to Southampton on Tuesday night, three days after winning the FA Cup with a penalty shootout triumph over Chelsea to keep their slim quadruple hopes alive. The Sky Blues could have delivered a hammer blow to their rivals if they had defeated West Ham on Sunday afternoon, but could only manage a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium.

Liverpool title race—when he skied a penalty late in the game in a 0–0 draw at Anfield. City manager Pep Guardiola hardly flinched when Fabianski dived to his left and clawed away Mahrez’s penalty. It was saved, though, by West Ham goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański and City had to settle for a 2–2 draw at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday—albeit from 2-0 down at halftime—to leave Liverpool still with hope.

Premier League hits and misses: Man City fight back to retain title ... (Sky Sports)

Plus: Tottenham keep the pressure on Arsenal while Leeds rescue what may prove to be an invaluable point in the battle to stay in the Premier League...

The gap is widening, but a fortnight of the season remains. I have a huge pride in the players for what they've done in the last couple of games, to continue with that fight and aggression. Patrick Vieira even referenced the issue in his post-match press conference: "When we get to the last third we don't always make the correct decisions and, of course, we need to keep working and keep improving. There'll also be new faces in the door as Edwards looks to shape his squad. For the next 91 minutes, that chance looked to be defining Leeds' day at the office as their fight for survival looked an ominous one until Gelhardt sparked them into life in injury-time. It was a fair assessment as Watford's season at Vicarage Road ended in a whimper. There was no looking for the easy pass against Brighton. He took the fight to them with some bulldozing runs and dangerous forward passes. But it was significant that Moyes sent for Noble when City had pulled themselves level, when West Ham needed someone to give them a foothold again in the middle of the park. They showed to be very professional and understanding the importance of the moment. Since Conte joined the club, Lloris has tied himself down to a new contract and solidified himself as one of Tottenham's most important stars. But now Burnley, as they showed against Tottenham on Sunday lunchtime, are quite easy on the eye. Guiding Brentford to mid-table on a small budget, while the other two promoted sides have endured torrid seasons, is mightily impressive.

“We didn’t expect to win the title with three, four or five games to spare. With City having claimed a point, they now sit four clear of the Reds and they also have a far superior goal difference to consider. With one match of the season remaining, there will be one point between the two sides.

Premier League: A penalty debate at Tottenham, expansive ... (iNews)

The title race will go down to the final day after City slipped up at West Ham, while none of relegation-threatened Burnley, Everton or Leeds secured wins.

More of the same, as one of the weirdest Premier League seasons in recent memory draws to a close. He cannot rely upon the continued (and extreme) overperformance of Jose Sa and he must find a way to break down teams that sit deep. An afternoon to sum up what a wasted season this has been for Watford, if you ignore the broadcasting revenues and subsequent parachute payments that will presumably be used to fund a promotion bid next season. If we can broadly agree that an offence was committed, can anyone really say that the offence merits a huge opportunity for a team to score? But Norwich have at least avoided a repeat of 2019-20, when they lost their last 10 games of the season to fall limply into the Championship. As soon as Kevin Friend was instructed to go to the VAR screen (and he’s blameless for not giving it in real time) there was only one likely outcome. First came the perceived lack of investment, particularly adding depth to a small, tired squad, then the sacking of Bielsa. If they were going to go down, they might as well have kept their hero. Supporters had had enough; they chanted first Marcelo Bielsa’s name and then that members of the board should be sacked for the way in which they have managed this season. Apply too much power and the ball may well be flicked to the far edge of the six-yard box, where again a teammate may be waiting. He created one excellent chance for Maxwel Cornet with a through ball and set up the same player for a half-chance after the break. That means Everton have to commit one player towards the edge of the penalty area to look after him but doesn’t telegraph whether it will be a short corner or not. The ball is played at a height where Wissa could use his head or lay the ball back with his foot to the edge of the box, a routine we have seen a few times recently in the Premier League.

The Premier League relegation battle: Everton, Leeds and Burnley ... (Sky Sports)

Burnley fill the final relegation spot but have a game in hand on Leeds above them; Everton also have two games left and one win will do for them.

Two draws will all but secure their safety too barring no miraculous mathematic goal swing with Leeds, who have a -18 worse goal difference than Frank Lampard's side. This means four points from their final two games - away at Aston Villa on Thursday and at home to Newcastle on Sunday - will be enough. Leeds remain favourites for relegation but their situation would have been far worse had Pascal Struijk not struck a late equaliser to lift them out of the bottom three against Brighton in a 1-1 draw.
