Kildare v Westmeath LIVE score updates from the Leinster semi-final (Irish Mirror)

The first of today's Leinster football semi-final sees Kildare and Westmeath lock horns at Croke Park. Kildare are the heavy favourites for this one having ...

What a start for Westmeath as right from the throw-in they win the ball and Ronan Wallace gallops down the centre of the pitch before finding Ronan O'Toole to find the back of the net. Kildare work the ball patiently before Daniel Flynn runs with his back to the goal before turning and hitting a lovely score over the bar. A fine response this has been from Kildare after the early Westmeath goal. What a start to this game. But Kildare respond up the other end as Darragh Kirwan fires over a good score from play. Connellan combines with John Heslin, with the latter hitting his first score of the day. A clincial counter attack from Kildare as Ben McCormack runs through the middle before passing it to Jimmy Hyland for a good score. A John Heslin free has reduced the gap to five points. The Kildare full forward line continues to impress. Much like the first half, Kildare are beginning to assert their dominance. The first straight from the throw in from Ronan O'Toole and the second late in the half from Jamie Gonoud. The Lilywhites are building up a big tally today.

“It’s just a matter of us refocusing now,” said Cooney. “We totally respect the Tailteann Cup competition. Kevin Flynn and McCormack responded with points, steadying Kildare and leaving them 1-13 to 2-6 clear at half-time. “I suppose if you’re going to concede a goal, it’s the best time to do it,” he said. At times, it was like a hurling game as the sides traded scores and blows. It was a performance that got us over the line. “Do I think that performance will win us the Leinster final?” asked Ryan. “I doubt it.
