Hilary Duff feared How I Met Your Father at first: 'Too intimidating' (Metro)

Having to create a sequel to one of the most popular sitcoms of the 00s sounds like a nightmare. But Hilary Duff gives it a brilliant go.

To be able to add her name to the show really was a big deal. I’m a mother of three and married so I have a lot more responsibility in my life then Sophie so it’s actually nice to go to work and get to drop that a little bit and step into a slightly more care-free space. I know that it’s a TV show but 87 first dates?

"I hope people take away the idea that they are not alone. HD: "It’s like they run off into the sunset together! I also love that New York City is a big part of the show. Hilary Duff: "This project was really attractive to me because the part of Sophie was very relatable. "I think she’s navigating life in a really relatable way. And while the premise is the same as HIMYM, which ran from 2005 until 2014, this new outing introduces a whole new cast of characters (see below for more) and dilemmas.

There's a romantic scene on the balcony with 'Sophie' and Josh Peck's character 'Drew'. The bar is the hearth of the show. The show is worthy of standalone status and doesn't lean on 'How I Met Your Mother', but we do appreciate the nods to it's sister show. It could even trump the original, but it just needs to not try so hard. As for our star of the show? The more the series goes on, the more adult-Lizzie fashion we get. This show is so jam-packed with one-liners that it feels self-conscious and bumpy.

How I Met Your Father is cheesy, inane and very hard to hate (iNews)

Disney+'s How I Met Your Mother spin-off is charming, despite its outdated sitcom tropes.

The zingers are often gag-inducing and none of the characters remotely plausible. By the end of the first episode I’d been whisked back to an era where “filmed before a live studio audience” was a mark of quality and Two And a Half Men confirmed Charlie Sheen as God among mortals. Duff – former teen star of Lizzie McGuire – will never be mistaken for a potential Oscar winner.

What quickly becomes clear is how much this style of comedy benefits from the extended runtime – more room to breathe, more room to get to know the characters, more room to evolve and self-correct within the first series alone. On the off chance that you’ve not made the connection, How I Met Your Father is somewhere between a sequel to and a spinoff from the earlier How I Met Your Mother, a series that ran for nine years from 2005 to 2014. Sometimes, actually, it’s hard not to feel like this might’ve worked better if it weren’t connected to How I Met Your Mother at all anyway. A big part of that comes from its casting, with Hilary Duff (Lizzie McGuire) in the lead and Josh Peck (Drake and Josh) in a significant supporting role; they’re both former child stars of the early 2000s, and the show is clearly catering to an audience who grew up with them. (Interestingly, the attempted Greta Gerwig/Meg Ryan iteration of this, 2014’s How I Met Your Dad, made a similar choice in its pilot episode too.) Will it? Probably the first thing you’ll notice about How I Met Your Father is how much it feels like a throwback.
